권 시장은 “부산시장 보궐선거는 더불어민주당 소속 전임시장이 성범죄를 저지르고 사퇴함으로써 혈세 수백억 원을 허비하면서 치르는 부끄러운 선거”라며 “이처럼 부끄럽고 몰염치한 보궐선거를 이기려고 4년 전 민주적 절차에 따라 결정된 국책사업인 김해 신공항을 납득할만한 이유도 없이 사실상 백지화하고 가덕도 신공항 특별법을 보궐선거에 이용하는 것은 비열한 매표행위나 다름없다”고 강력히 비판했다.
아울러 “김해 신공항에 문제가 있다면 영남권 5개 시도의 민주적 논의와 합의를 다시 모아야 하는 것이 순리”라면서 “대구경북을 완전히 배제한 채 가덕도 신공항 특별법을 수의 힘으로 밀어붙이고, 정히 그러려면 형평성에 맞게 대구경북 신공항 특별법이라도 함께 제정해 달라는 대구경북 시도민들의 간절한 호소마저 선거의 유불리를 따져 외면하는 것은 대구경북 패싱을 넘어 마지막 자존심까지 짓밟는 무도한 일”이라며 강조했다.
