Memories of Democratization Must Not Degenerate into a License for Entrenched Privilege!
- Columnist Jeong Seong-tae
The flower of democracy blossomed upon the cold asphalt. The dedication and courage of the "86 Generation"—who sowed the seeds of democracy and human rights while resisting the fear and oppression of military dictatorship—hold immense historical significance. It is impossible to deny the contributions they made to a shining chapter of modern Korean history. Yet, paradoxically, some politicians from this generation now face criticism for undermining the very principles of democracy and fairness they once championed.
This stems from an attitude that views their pride as key figures in democratization as a sort of "permanent license" exempting them from accountability for any wrongdoing. Having ascended to the pinnacle of political power and established themselves as a privileged class, some 86 Generation politicians are now replicating the very vices of the old order they once sought to dismantle. Despite wrapping themselves in the appealing rhetoric of progressivism and reform, in reality, they sit at the apex of an interest-driven cartel hell-bent on maintaining and reinforcing their vested interests.
The shamelessness displayed by some 86 Generation politicians has crossed the line of acceptability. For Korean politics to move forward, we must preserve the positive legacy of the 86 Generation while urgently fostering a healthy political culture that embraces new generations and values. We must remember that politics is not about resting on the laurels of past glory; it requires constant reform and innovation directed toward the future. That said, I have not the slightest intention of disparaging the fact that the "86 generation" fought on the front lines of the democratization movement or the sacrifices they made along the way. They laid the foundation for South Korea’s democratic development, and their courage and sacrifice deserve enduring respect. However, the behavior they have exhibited since gaining political power—specifically the contradictory duality arising from their monopolization of power as an entrenched elite—remains a challenge our society must overcome.
The primary issue is a lack of moral sensitivity. The self-sacrifice they demonstrated during the democratization struggles has vanished; instead, they now unhesitatingly disregard institutions and principles, relying on their numerical superiority. They apply strict standards to their opponents while showing boundless leniency toward their own flaws—a deceptive practice. For them, politics has devolved into a channel for the organized sharing of benefits, leaving behind nothing but extreme selfishness and hypocrisy.
We face a reality where democratic values are being undermined by those who enjoy political success, built upon the sacred blood and tears of countless unsung heroes from the past. Even the true meaning of "reform" has been reduced to a nuisance, and social distrust has reached a critical level. The shamelessness of some politicians from the 86 generation has not only deeply disappointed citizens but also serves as a reminder that the cause of democratization can never serve as a license for misconduct.
Ultimately, the root of the problem lies in a political structure that has become entrenched in privilege. Certain politicians of the 86 generation reinforce this structure, persisting in actions that are far removed from resolving social inequality. Their entrenchment of vested interests is causing reform to regress and stands as a major obstacle that shakes public trust in fairness and justice. While they constantly speak of progressivism and reform, their actual behavior mirrors the unilateral, authoritarian ways of the past military dictatorship era.
Yet, at the drop of a hat, they exploit their past credentials as activists—much like endlessly boiling the same beef bones for broth. This duplicity among certain politicians of the "86 generation" severely stifles the nation's dynamism. Consequently, the public no longer applauds their narratives of past struggles. What the people crave is not tales of past achievements, but realistic alternatives to wipe away the tears of struggling ordinary citizens and the capacity to design a future.
Our society must now find a new path forward. It is time to move beyond the historical contributions of the 86 generation, break free from their decayed vested interests, and discover the momentum for genuine change that benefits future generations. We must seek a direction that liberates the people from injustice and poverty through practical policies and strengthened systems that support the socially vulnerable and the majority. This is not a matter of ideology or partisanship, but a question of fairness and justice.
It is the stern will of the people—thirsting for common sense—and no one else, that heralds the end of this outdated era. The badge of honor from the democratization movement can no longer serve as a shield to mask today’s misconduct and deviations. While past contributions deserve respect, current power must be judged by current standards. That is the minimum principle demanded by democracy. The time has come to tear down the walls of the new privileges they have erected in the name of democratization. * Author: Jeong Seong-tae (Poet/Columnist)
