-Reflections on reading an unpublished letter from Park Chung-hee to his daughter... "The greed for prolonged power reeks from it."
Moon Il-suk, Publisher
Former President Park Chung-hee was a long-term ruler. After successfully staging the May 16 military coup in 1961, he governed the country for 18 years and six months. The recently released film *Assassination* (or *Assassins*) is currently a box-office hit. However, the movie has sparked controversy because its theme touches upon the death of First Lady Yuk Young-soo.
Amidst this, former President Park Geun-hye—the daughter of Yuk Young-soo—had a letter from that era (written by then-President Park Chung-hee to his daughter, Park Geun-hye) released through an aide. It is reported that the letter was made public by ***, a lawmaker from the People Power Party. At the time of Yuk Young-soo's death, her daughter Park Geun-hye was studying abroad in France. Upon receiving the tragic news of her mother's passing, she was hurriedly making her way back to Korea. It was during this time that President Park Chung-hee wrote a letter to his daughter conveying his state of mind. Those who have read the letter have remarked that it is "filled with such love for the deceased and the family that it brings tears to one's eyes."
In the letter written immediately after Yuk Young-soo's death, President Park Chung-hee expressed sentiments such as: "Your mother took the fatal bullet meant for me in my stead," "I have wondered time and again how much better it would have been had I been the one struck and your mother had lived," and "At first, I felt as though the heavens were collapsing..." This previously unpublished letter was written at 10:00 AM on August 17, 1974—a time of deep mourning. As a journalist reading this handwritten letter from Park Chung-hee, I find myself deeply moved by the expression of raw, human grief following his wife's death. With this in mind, I present the full text of the letter below.
An Unpublished Letter from President Park Chung-hee to His Daughter (Park Geun-hye) [Full Text]
—"Your mother took the fatal bullet meant for me."
Geun-hye, how could this happen? You must have been so shocked. I have sent someone to Tokyo to meet Geun-young; please listen carefully to what they have to tell you. Although it is impossible to suppress the heartbreaking grief—feeling as though the sky has collapsed and the earth has given way—we must all steel ourselves now. We need to find a way to rebuild our family, now without Mother, through our own strength and effort.
With your elderly grandmother—now eighty years old—and Ji-man, who is just beginning to mature, you must now step in and take your mother's place. And you have your father, too. While I may not be able to fill even a fraction of the role your mother played, I promise to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to be a good father to the three of you.
Your mother was the finest mother in the world. She was not only a devoted wife and homemaker but also a female leader for this nation—a mother figure the likes of whom we have seen in the past and are unlikely to see again. Your mother took the fatal bullet meant for me. I find myself wondering time and again how much better it would have been had I been the one struck down and your mother had lived.
Instead, your mother took the blow meant for me; she left us, entrusting the responsibility for you children and this nation to me. Facing this immense tragedy, I have come to realize anew just how composed and admirable Geun-young is. Once Geun-young and you—Geun-hye—are together again, let us continue to care for Grandmother just as we always have, and let us guide and educate Ji-man well, striving to move forward just as we did when Mother was with us.
This is the way to honor our departed Mother’s wishes, to repay her grace, and to fulfill our filial duty. At first, I felt as though the heavens were collapsing and could barely steady my heart; yet, realizing that I must be the first to summon courage, I have resolved to endure and bear everything. You, too, must steel yourself and endure as best you can.
I know that our wonderful Geun-hye will handle everything well, of course. Yet, knowing you will return in just ten hours, the wait feels agonizingly long—like three autumns passing in a single moment—while the thought of welcoming you home alone at the doorway leaves me feeling utterly desolate. <Written by Father, 10:00 AM, August 17, 1974>.
The above is the full text of the letter President Park Chung-hee sent to his daughter.
What follows is the author's critique. One can discern the greed of a long-term ruler in this letter. The author muses that it would have been better had he stepped down from the presidency when his wife, First Lady Yuk Young-soo, was killed by gunfire. In 1974, the atmosphere was charged with fierce demands for President Park Chung-hee’s resignation, fueled by events such as the "Mincheonghakryeon" (National Democratic Youth and Student Federation) incident. Protests across university campuses were intensifying. Yet, even in a letter sent to his daughter, Park Chung-hee revealed his greed for prolonged power. In that letter, he wrote, "Now, you must step in and take your mother's place." This sentence reeks of the avarice of a ruler intent on staying in power indefinitely.
From the time of First Lady Yuk Young-soo’s death until he fell to the bullets fired by Kim Jae-gyu—then-director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency—on October 26, 1979, Park Chung-hee had his eldest daughter, Park Geun-hye, assume the role her mother had once held. This is the tragic narrative that unfolded following Yuk Young-soo's passing. moonilsuk@naver.com
