'Top Prospects' Son Seo-yeon and 194cm Park Seo-yoon Set for 'Championship Showdown' at KYK High School Volleyball Tournament

- Reporter Park Jin-cheol

Who will emerge as the ultimate powerhouse in girls' high school volleyball? Top prospects are set to clash for the championship trophy in the final.

On the 1st, Seonmyeong Girls' High School and Jungang Girls' High School advanced to the final after winning their respective semifinal matches in the girls' division of the '2026 Ansan KYK High School Volleyball Tournament,' held at the Kim Yeon-koung Gymnasium in Sangnoksu, Ansan. Seonmyeong Girls' High School defeated Cheonan Cheongsu High School, and Jungang Girls' High School beat Gwangju Sports High School, both with a set score of 3-0.

In the boys' division semifinals, Inha University High School and Suncheon Jeil High School advanced to the final by defeating Sokcho High School and Suseong High School, respectively, with 3-0 scores.

Consequently, the following matches are scheduled for the 2nd: the girls' 3rd/4th place match (Cheonan Cheongsu vs. Gwangju Sports) at 9:00 AM; the boys' 3rd/4th place match (Sokcho vs. Suseong) at 11:00 AM; the boys' final (Inha University High School vs. Suncheon Jeil) at 1:00 PM; and the girls' final (Seonmyeong Girls' High School vs. Jungang Girls' High School) at 3:00 PM.

As all four matches are taking place at the same venue, the start times are subject to change depending on the progress of the preceding matches. The KYK High School Volleyball Championship was organized to determine the true top team in high school volleyball, featuring only the four elite teams that have each won at least one tournament this year.

The "KYK" in the tournament's name reflects the sponsorship of the KYK Foundation, established by "Volleyball Empress" Kim Yeon-koung. The event is jointly hosted and organized by the KYK Foundation, the Korea Middle & High School Volleyball Federation, the Ansan City Volleyball Association, and the Ansan City Sports Council.

Particular attention is focused on the girls' division final between Seonmyeong Girls' High School and Joongang Girls' High School, as the match features a clash between top-tier prospects in high school girls' volleyball.

The key figures in this matchup are Son Seo-yeon (181cm, 1st year), the main attacker for Seonmyeong Girls' High School, and Park Seo-yoon (2nd year), the tallest player at 194cm and a core middle blocker for Joongang Girls' High School.

Both players have fully demonstrated their status as elite prospects through outstanding performances in international tournaments held this year. Son Seo-yeon played a pivotal role in leading South Korea to a sixth-place finish at the '2026 U17 World Championship' held last August, excelling as both the national team captain and a key attacker. She is currently garnering significant attention from the volleyball community and the media.

Park Seo-yun also shone as the national team captain and starting middle blocker at the '2026 U18 Asian Championship' last July, leading the team to a runner-up finish. In doing so, the team secured a spot in the '2027 U19 World Championship.' Park was honored with the 'Best Middle Blocker' award at the U18 Asian Championship.

Both Son Seo-yeon and Park Seo-yun share the distinction of being scholarship recipients from the Kim Yeon-koung (KYK) Foundation; they were selected for the program in September of last year.

The KYK Foundation began actively supporting promising young athletes last year. Starting with nine volleyball prospects (both male and female) in September 2023, the foundation significantly expanded its scholarship program this past June to include 13 athletes across 11 different sports. Selected athletes receive a basic annual scholarship, performance-based incentive scholarships, and access to specialized medical services through partner hospitals.

**Large Turnout of V-League Rookie Draft Prospects**

The KYK High School Volleyball Championship is also drawing attention for the participation of numerous prospects who are set to enter the '2026-2027 V-League Women's Rookie Draft' on October 28. Key players currently in their third year and expected to enter the V-League rookie draft include Seonmyeong Girls' High School's starting outside hitter Oh Hae-sol (183cm), opposite Park Eun-bin (182cm), and setter Jeong Se-hee (174cm), as well as Joongang Girls' High School's starting outside hitter Oh Se-in (181cm) and setter Kim Mi-ju (174cm).

Additionally, Seonmyeong Girls' High School is drawing attention for first-year setter Lee Seo-in (177cm)—who played as a starter at this year's U17 World Championship—alongside Son Seo-yeon. Joongang Girls' High School features standout players such as first-year opposite Lee Da-yeon (175cm, a starter at the U17 World Championship), second-year outside hitter Park Gang-bin (175cm, U18 Asian Championship), and second-year starting libero Jo Ri-bin (168cm).
