"Jusa-pa" (Pro-North Korea) Style Thinking Stemming from a Lack of True Humanities Education

- Novelist Park Gyeong-beom

The shooting incident of August 15, 1974, became fodder for conspiracy theories almost immediately after it occurred. Rumors abounded claiming that Mun Se-gwang was not the true culprit or even that the event was orchestrated from within the corridors of power. While the lapses in security and repeated blunders surrounding the incident were baffling, the tendency in some quarters to view the event as a massive conspiracy driven by calculated intent is a subject worthy of study from a humanities perspective.

This phenomenon is not limited to the August 15 shooting. The Daegu subway fire and the sinking of the Sewol ferry also exhibit a parallel pattern in how these tragedies unfolded. From a conspiracy-theory standpoint, one might ask how such incomprehensible chains of errors could occur unless they were the result of a deliberate plot; however, these events should be understood as total collapses caused by localized fractures within the social system aligning perfectly at the worst possible moment.

In the case of the August 15 shooting, a series of inappropriate responses occurred: the theft of a gun from a Japanese police box; the successful smuggling of a concealed firearm through airport security inside a radio; the failure to inspect a vehicle because the perpetrator was posing as a foreign dignitary in a luxury car; entry into the venue without proper identification badges amidst the chaos just before the President's arrival; and the police's failure to intervene physically when the incident began, paralyzed by an overwhelming hierarchy that forbade action without orders from the Presidential Security Service. In the Daegu subway fire, a series of adverse factors—such as the lack of heroic initiative among passengers in the arson-stricken car, a breakdown in communication between station staff and the train operator, the operator fleeing after removing the master key, a train on the opposite track stopping despite the emergency, and the use of flammable interior materials alongside the absence of proper disaster protocols—interlocked like the gears of a machine. Similarly, the sinking of the *Sewol* ferry was the result of a convergence of physical hazards—such as reckless structural modifications, overloading, and a sharp change of course during the voyage—and moral failures, including the cowardly escape of the captain and crew, erroneous announcements instructing passengers to stay put, and a lack of swift, decisive rescue operations. Both incidents demonstrate that humans cannot perfectly control the world and that social systems can collapse at any moment.

The humanities are essential for safeguarding individual mental health and maintaining the well-being of social systems. Paradoxically, however, many of the figures who today stoke conspiracy theories and exploit the public's confirmation bias while claiming to reconstruct historical events are themselves scholars of the humanities. The depth of thought they display is far removed from the true essence of the humanities. This stems from one of two reasons: either they have not genuinely studied the humanities, or—even if they have—they have become fixated on a single ideology. Underlying their mindset is an arrogance—an unbridled form of humanism—that assumes all historical outcomes are the result of perfect human intention and control. The obsession with the idea that every calamity must have a mastermind driven by clear malice aligns with *Juche* ideology—a philosophy that rejects transcendental providence and the inherent limitations of human capability in favor of an exclusive emphasis on human agency. The erroneous belief that humans can become the absolute masters of their own destiny, independent of God or spiritual order, gives rise to a materialistic delusion that views the world merely as an arena of conspiracies. True humanities do not regard humans as omnipotent controllers of the world; rather, they humbly acknowledge the vast forces at work beyond the individual human.

Hegel identified the "Absolute Spirit" as the driving force of history; in this context, he discussed the "Cunning of Reason" (*List der Vernunft*), a concept wherein even human passions and delusions are harnessed to serve historical ends. He argued that no matter how much individuals believe they are acting based on their own calculated agency, they are ultimately nothing more than instruments within the movement of the colossal entity known as world history.

“We call it the ‘Cunning of Reason’ (*List der Vernunft*) when Reason allows passion to operate freely, such that the very things created by that passion are what ultimately suffer the damage and blows.”— *Lectures on the Philosophy of History* (Trans. Kim Jong-ho, Samseong Publishing, 1986, p. 104)

Max Weber observed that while humans constructed rational social systems to maximize efficiency, these systems eventually grew beyond human control, becoming an "iron cage" that oppresses the very people who created them. The incomprehensible chain of errors and the paralysis of judgment displayed by those involved in historical tragedies and major disasters serve as evidence of the quintessential human helplessness revealed when such impersonal systems collapse.

“The Puritans wanted to be men of a calling. [...] For when asceticism was carried out of monastic cells into everyday life and began to dominate worldly morality, it contributed to the formation of the powerful world system of the modern economic order. [...] But fate decreed that this cloak should become an iron-hard shell.”

— *Weber’s Essays on Social Science* (Translated by Yang Hoe-su, Eul-Yoo Publishing, 1988, p. 267)

Beyond this, discussions regarding transcendent concepts—such as Carl Jung’s theory of archetypes within the collective unconscious—are considered common knowledge in the humanities.

Conspiracy theorists, failing to consider the existence of such overarching dynamics, interpret phenomena they cannot comprehend as orchestrated plots. The logic that equates the beneficiary of an event with its instigator is akin to arguing that a child who inherits their parents' estate must have killed them. (Hegel, mentioned earlier, was also able to devote himself to his research after inheriting his father's estate—a stroke of fortune that came while he was still struggling to secure steady employment.)

A materialistic society that disregards the transcendental dimension and denies human limitations—rather than humbly acknowledging and reflecting on the fact that humans are finite and imperfect beings in the face of tragedy—plunges into a chaotic cycle of endless finger-pointing, where opponents are demonized and branded as the masterminds behind conspiracies. True humanistic reflection is not the arrogant *Juche*-like delusion that one can fully control the world, but the realization that humans are imperfect and must remain humble before a higher providence. Those who distort reality while immersed in the sensational fantasies of conspiracy theories may well be imprisoning themselves behind the iron bars of materialistic ideology; likewise, those who criticize them as *Jusa-pa* (pro-North Korea factions) should not merely condemn their factionalism but must also rebuke the *Juche*-inspired mindset in which they are steeped.
