KOGAS Hosts Forum to Explore Responses to Rising Power Demand from High-Tech Industries
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) organized a forum to discuss the role of natural gas and the energy industry's strategic response amidst rising electricity demand driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-tech industries.
KOGAS announced that it held the 10th KOGAS Forum on October 1 at the Royal Hotel Seoul, centering on the theme "Three Major Mega-Projects and the Role of Natural Gas."
The KOGAS Forum is an event where domestic and international energy experts and industry stakeholders gather to share insights on key issues facing the natural gas industry and discuss future strategies. Approximately 150 people attended the forum, including KOGAS President Hong Eui-rak, representatives from energy companies, the city gas and power generation sectors, and academic experts.
The forum focused on the role of natural gas in addressing the surge in electricity demand and shifts in the power generation mix resulting from the "three major mega-projects" currently under discussion in the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand.
Presentations were delivered by Professor Joo Sung-kwan of Korea University, Director Park Woo-young of the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI), and Professor Choi Yong-ok of Chung-Ang University.
Professor Joo Sung-kwan spoke on "The Era of AI and High-Tech Industries: Timely Power Supply and the Role of the Gas Industry," highlighting the importance of reliable electricity supply as high-tech industries expand. Director Park Woo-young outlined key factors to consider when formulating power supply plans and discussed the direction of energy policy, while Professor Choi Yong-ok offered insights on developing a natural gas supply and demand plan that complements the Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand.
Following the presentations, a panel discussion was held, moderated by Professor Cho Hong-jong of Dankook University. Participants exchanged views on strategies to meet the electricity demand anticipated from three major mega-projects, as well as ways to utilize natural gas as a flexible resource.
In particular, it was noted that natural gas power generation serves as a valuable resource for ensuring grid stability and providing a reliable power supply to high-tech industries, given its ability to relatively quickly adjust output in response to fluctuations in electricity demand.
"Flexible resources" refer to power sources capable of rapidly adjusting generator startup and output to match variations in electricity demand or renewable energy generation.
Hong Eui-rak, President of the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), stated, "Natural gas serves as a foundation for supporting grid stability and supplying the power required by high-tech industries in a timely manner." He added, "We aim to leap forward as an energy platform company that connects energy and industry, as well as technology and markets, by leveraging AI and data and driving innovation in carbon-neutral technologies."
Based on the expert insights shared at the forum, KOGAS plans to continue exploring the role of natural gas in responding to rapidly changing energy demands and the evolving landscape of the electricity market.
