Former Lawmaker Yoo Seong-min: “Lee Jae-myung Must Declare He Will Stand Trial After His Presidency”
- Reporter Park Jeong-dae
Former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min published a post titled “Haengsaengjeuksa (幸生則死)—Seeking to Survive by Chance Leads to Death” on the Facebook page of *SNS Journal* on September 12. The article states, “This is a message that President Lee Jae-myung—whose approval ratings have plummeted in just a few months—must take to heart right now. President Lee is a ‘politician driven by survival.’ He has endured through sheer tenacity, making his own survival his top priority. He has also benefited from extraordinary luck; had it not been for the declaration of martial law, he might well be in prison today rather than the Blue House. Although he ascended to the presidency with relative ease, he must now reflect deeply on what truly constitutes a path to survival.” It emphasizes, “He must completely abandon his obsession with life after his term ends. The public recognizes that the dismantling of the prosecution, the withdrawal of indictments and trials, the suppression of the judiciary, and the push for a constitutional amendment allowing consecutive terms are all acts that disrupt state affairs and violate the Constitution—stemming solely from his personal schemes to ensure his own safety post-presidency. The people will never forgive a situation where the safety, lives, freedom, and rights of countless citizens are infringed upon for the sake of one man’s security. The President must humbly declare to the nation: ‘There will be no withdrawal of indictments, no constitutional amendment for consecutive terms, and I will stand trial after my term concludes.’” It continues, “The nominee for Minister of Justice, who invited suspicion regarding the withdrawal of indictments, must be made to resign before the confirmation hearing; furthermore, allegations of illegal lobbying and stock price manipulation must be thoroughly investigated to demonstrate the consequences—what the President himself described as ‘total ruin’—for such actions. The nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family—who has become a symbol of privilege and hypocrisy—must also be made to resign before the hearing. All officials in the Blue House’s ‘shadow’ personnel network responsible for these failed appointments must be dismissed, and the official personnel management system must be restored to proper functioning.” It adds, “The image of him as a ‘competent president who gets the job done’ has also faded. Whether looking at real estate, stocks, taxes, prices, youth unemployment, wealth inequality, or national defense, fewer and fewer citizens believe he is performing well. Issues such as labor, welfare, pensions, healthcare, education, and the low birth rate...” "Difficult tasks requiring reform have either been left untouched or are moving in the wrong direction. Looking at the 821-trillion-won budget and the 162-trillion-won 'future response fund,' the prevailing public sentiment is simply that taxpayer money is being squandered recklessly. To govern effectively, one must build a top-tier government staffed by top-tier talent. The high hopes the public held when the administration first championed 'pragmatism' have vanished without a trace. Unless the President acknowledges that policies are failing due to his own arrogance and hubris—believing he knows best—no remedy will work."
At the end of his statement, former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min added, "The President’s decline brings a 'reflexive benefit' to the opposition party. Thanks to the President, the approval rating for the People Power Party has recently risen, and some even speak of hope for the general election. However, adding another failed president and a failed administration to our history would be a national misfortune. The only way to rectify this regime's failures is for the opposition to achieve an overwhelming victory in the general election. If an opposition party—which fails to build its own capabilities through unity and innovation and instead relies solely on the precarious 'reflexive benefit' of the ruling party's struggles—expects to be chosen by the people, it will face the fate of *haengsaengjeuksa* (seeking survival through mere luck leads to ruin)."
