Why is the YouTube channel ‘Yadanbeopseok’ investigating suspicions surrounding Ven. Jaseung’s death? ... “Corruption in the appointment process for head monks?”

- Moon Il-suk, Publisher

Ven. Jaseung, the former President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, passed away on November 29, 2023. Although he was simply a monk who had served as the Order's administrative head, controversies and suspicions surrounding his death remain a hot topic even now.

The YouTube channel ‘Yadanbeopseok,’ which primarily covers news from the Buddhist community, has been running a series addressing suspicions regarding Ven. Jaseung’s death; the channel attracts a large number of viewers. The channel has raised questions about the funeral procedures and the characterization of his death—officially attributed to an extreme act known as *soshin-gongyang* (self-immolation as an offering to the Buddha).

The argument is that the event was inconsistent with strict traditions. Traditional Buddhist *soshin-gongyang* involves publicly announcing the intention beforehand, undergoing a long period of rigorous spiritual practice and preparatory rituals, and carrying out the act in a solemn, proper manner before an audience. In contrast, critics point out that Ven. Jaseung’s death—which involved setting fire to a monk’s living quarters within the temple—does not align with the standard definition of *soshin-gongyang*. They have taken issue with the fact that the act involved arson against a temple of cultural heritage significance. Critics argue that the Jogye Order’s administration hastily labeled the objective incident—an act of arson against a building and an extreme personal choice—as *soshin-gongyang* (self-cremation) in order to mystify and glorify it.

The unclear background and motives behind Ven. Jaseung’s sudden death have also been highlighted as points of suspicion. Until just before his passing, Venerable Jaseung was vigorously leading efforts to revitalize Buddhism—such as the "Sangwol Gyeolsa" movement—and remained highly active in external affairs both within and outside the religious order. The fact that such a prominent figure at the pinnacle of power suddenly took his own life without any apparent warning signs or clear reasons fueled public suspicion. Within the Buddhist community, an atmosphere developed where even raising questions or discussing rumors regarding the circumstances of his death was strictly taboo; ironically, this very silence sparked further speculation that there might be "unspeakable, murky circumstances" hidden behind the incident.

Questions also arose regarding the suicide note he left behind and the subsequent investigation. The content of the note was deemed unnatural. A memo found at the scene—serving as a suicide note—included a line stating, "CCTV is recording, so do not go to the trouble [of performing an autopsy]." Critics argued that it was highly unusual for someone in the desperate throes of taking their own life to preemptively discourage investigative procedures like forensic examinations or autopsies, leading some to suggest that the possibility of foul play could not be entirely ruled out.

Speculation also emerged linking the incident to the political sphere and counter-espionage investigations. It was belatedly revealed that President Yoon Suk-yeol had ordered the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to conduct a separate investigation, citing potential foul play or suspicions related to national security—such as possible involvement in espionage—at the time of Jaseung’s death. This revelation has fueled conspiracy theories suggesting there may be a hidden backstory to the case, which was officially concluded as a simple suicide. Furthermore, questions were raised regarding the vast sums of money and assets Jaseung handled or possessed during his lifetime—a matter that seemed at odds with the Jogye Order’s identity as an ascetic sect that emphasizes the virtue of non-attachment to material possessions. Questions have arisen regarding the extent of the legacy left by Jaseung and the methods by which he amassed such wealth. Suspicions center not on offerings made by lay believers, but on whether he solicited or received funds by leveraging his position as the President of the Jogye Order’s Administrative Headquarters—the body responsible for governing the order. It has been suggested that he may have secured vast sums of money by exploiting his authority to appoint and dismiss temple head monks. While the exact total of Jaseung’s personal assets has never been officially disclosed, there has been persistent speculation within and outside the Buddhist community that the figure ranges from several billion to tens of billions of won. According to a formal complaint filed with the police by civic groups such as the Center for Sangha Self-Purification (under the Solidarity for Participatory Buddhism), assets totaling at least 3.35 billion won were identified following his passing; however, the veracity of these figures remains unverified, so the extent to which they are factual is unknown.

These groups raised allegations that 1.8 billion won of this amount was transferred to "Sangwol Gyeolsa," an incorporated association founded by Jaseung, while the remainder was arbitrarily distributed or lost to entities such as Dongguk University and Buddhist media outlets without following proper legal procedures (such as the appointment of an executor). Some within the Jogye Order have argued that, given the immense power he wielded and the assets of organizations like the Eunjung Buddhist Culture Promotion Foundation—which he effectively owned or heavily influenced during his lifetime—his unofficial personal assets or managed funds could amount to tens of billions of won.

The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism mandates by law that monks must donate any assets held in their personal names to the Order upon their passing. Jaseung himself had drafted and submitted a will in 2010, during his lifetime, stating that his assets would revert to the Jogye Order after his death. When certain Buddhist groups (such as the "Yadanbeopseok Sangha") continued to criticize and file complaints against the current President of the Jogye Order, Ven. Jin-u—accusing him of dereliction of duty regarding the recovery of the late Ven. Ja-seung’s estate—the Order issued an official statement declaring that the administrative procedures to transfer the bequeathed assets to the Order had already been completed. Although the Order did not disclose a detailed itemization of the assets, it maintains a firm stance that it will take strict legal action against external forces that recklessly spread allegations and slander without verifying the facts.

The "Center for Sangha Self-Purification" under the civic group Solidarity for Participatory Buddhism has estimated the value of the estate at approximately 3.3 billion won. Meanwhile, opposing factions have long suspected the existence of significant hidden assets. Conversely, the Jogye Order’s administration maintains that since the relevant administrative procedures are concluded, any further allegations are merely baseless attempts to destabilize the Order. The true nature of the estate remains shrouded in confusion.

Just as every living cat has a tail, so too does money in this world carry a "tail"—a trail of connections. The controversy surrounding the funds from the estate of the late Ven. Ja-seung, former President of the Jogye Order, ultimately hinges on the investigative authorities' willingness to act. Since every sum of money has a connecting link—a tail—that tail cannot be hidden forever. It is essential for the religious community to trace the flow of funds involved in the appointment and dismissal of head monks, whether for the sake of internal purification or to strictly root out corruption associated with these processes. This must serve as an opportunity to heal the pain of monks who were unjustly ousted due to the abuse of the power to appoint and dismiss head monks. moonilsuk@naver.com
