Artist Kim Ki-soo Opens 'Darongdiri' Gallery

An Artistic Dialogue Bridging Past and Present… 27 Works Across 8 Themes Unveiled for the First Time

Reporter Lee Yong-chan

Artist Kim Ki-soo—who, despite not majoring in Western painting, creates works that offer a modern reinterpretation of Korean sensibilities and traditional imagery—has opened the gallery 'Darongdiri' on the Ssanghwacha Street in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do, and launched its inaugural special exhibition.

'Darongdiri' is a multi-cultural space designed to foster an artistic dialogue connecting the past and the present.

For his debut special exhibition, titled 'Beginning, Arirang, and...', Kim welcomes visitors with works—such as musical staves and scores for 'Arirang' and 'Jeongeupsa'—created using a world-first artistic technique involving the use of paper strips cut to a thickness of just 0.4mm.

The exhibition is drawing significant attention by showcasing 27 pieces across eight themes, including the Taegeuk(yin-yang) symbol, the spinning of a pinwheel, 'Jeongeupsa,' peace (viewed from a cosmic perspective), a sunrise over Dokdo, the dance of Arirang and Mudong (child dancers), and a reinterpretation of the Miindo(portrait of a beautiful woman).

The current exhibition at Gallery 'Darongdiri' is open for free viewing from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM until this coming December; the gallery is closed on Mondays.

For further details, please contact Gallery 'Darongdiri'.

Artist Kim stated, "I opened Gallery 'Darongdiri' because works such as *Arirang*—which stirs the heart more deeply than even the Mona Lisa (da Vinci) or The Dance (Henri Matisse)—as well as Portrait of a Beauty (Shin Yun-bok) and Dancing Boy (Kim Hong-do), remain so vividly in my heart I aim to lead the Hallyu (Korean Wave) culture with them, just as K-Pop has done."

He added, "This special exhibition aims to foster intergenerational artistic dialogue through themes such as the Taegeuk symbol, pinwheels, peace, the song 'Jeongeupsa,' images that look the same even when viewed upside down, an imagined 'Gumidong Azalea Festival,' the sunrise at Dokdo, and reinterpretations of works by painters Shin Yun-bok and Kim Hong-do."

He continued, "We hope for great interest and attendance at this inaugural special exhibition, titled 'Beginning, Arirang, and...', which captures the Korean spirit that lives and breathes within our hearts."

Cultural critic Kim Byeong-o commented, "The melodies of 'Arirang' and the song 'Jeongeupsa' embedded in the artworks resonate deeply with us; meanwhile, the artist's recreations of Kim Hong-do's Mudong (Dancing Boy) and Shin Yun-bok's Miindo (Portrait of a Beauty)—originally from the past—are brought back to life, allowing the spirits and lives of our ancestors to breathe once more."

He further remarked, "What is most Korean is also most global," adding, "It appears that familiar, perhaps clichéd motifs are being transformed into something new, and stories that had remained trapped in the past are being revived through artist Kim Ki-soo's work."
