Wolseong Nuclear Power Site Shares Anti-Drone Response System at Daegu-Gyeongbuk Counter-Terrorism Council

Relevant agencies in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions shared response systems and discussed cooperation strategies to enhance their capabilities in countering drone threats targeting critical national infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power’s (KHNP) Wolseong Nuclear Power Site announced that it participated in the "Second Half of 2026 Daegu-Gyeongbuk Counter-Terrorism Council" meeting—held at Hotel Inter-Burgo in Daegu on the 9th—and presented its response system for addressing drone threats.

Organized by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the council meeting was attended by local counter-terrorism agencies, including Daegu Metropolitan City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the police, the fire department, and the military. Participants reviewed domestic and international terrorism trends and the evolving nature of drone threats, while discussing agency-specific response systems and cooperation measures to ensure the safety of critical national infrastructure.

At the meeting, the Wolseong Nuclear Power Site explained the integrated response system it operates to counter drone threats near the plant. They detailed a phased response framework—encompassing surveillance and detection—designed to identify unauthorized drone approaches early and enable appropriate responses based on the situation, as well as their efforts to prepare for emergencies through coordination with relevant agencies.

In particular, they highlighted the establishment of a comprehensive defense system that includes managing no-fly zones around the plant and utilizing equipment for drone detection, identification, surveillance, tracking, and threat neutralization.

Recognizing that the advancement of drone technology could lead to more diverse threats against critical national infrastructure, the Wolseong Site continuously reviews and updates its response system. Furthermore, the site is committed to strengthening cooperative frameworks for real-world scenarios by sharing information with relevant agencies and enhancing joint response capabilities. Participating organizations reached a consensus on the need to proactively address drone threats targeting critical national infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants. They also agreed to strengthen ongoing cooperation and information sharing to ensure seamless, coordinated responses among the agencies in the event of a threat.

Kwon Won-taek, Head of the Wolsong Nuclear Power Headquarters, stated, "With the advancement and expanding use of drone technology, we must thoroughly prepare for new types of threats facing critical national infrastructure." He added, "We will continue to bolster our response capabilities to ensure nuclear power plant safety while maintaining a close cooperative framework with relevant agencies."
