[Here is the English version of the article] Missing Crew Member in Tugboat Accident Found Dead in Pohang

Coast Guard identifies victim as second engineer through phone records and fingerprint analysis

A crew member who went missing after a tugboat capsized and sank has been found dead on a beach in Pohang, South Korea, the Busan Coast Guard said Tuesday.

The victim was identified as a 56-year-old second engineer who had been among six crew members reported missing after the accident.

According to the Busan Coast Guard, a sanitation worker discovered the body at around 8:48 a.m. Tuesday on the beach in front of a public restroom near Dogu Beach in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, and reported it to authorities.

Coast Guard officers recovered the victim’s personal belongings and began efforts to establish his identity.

Investigators obtained phone numbers associated with a mobile phone and smartwatch found with the victim and used digital forensic analysis to compare them with information on the crew members missing from the tugboat accident. The analysis helped authorities narrow down the victim’s identity.

The Coast Guard then conducted a detailed fingerprint comparison. At around 9:39 p.m., the fingerprints were confirmed to match those of the missing second engineer.

Officials said a standard fingerprint examination alone was not sufficient to establish the victim’s identity. Investigators ultimately confirmed the identity through a one-to-one forensic comparison between the victim’s fingerprints and those of the missing crew member.

With one of the six missing crew members now accounted for, the Busan Coast Guard has expanded the search for the remaining five. The search area has been extended to waters and coastal areas under the jurisdiction of the East Regional Headquarters of the Korea Coast Guard, which covers Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces.

Authorities will continue searching for the remaining missing crew members.
