The “Bird’s-Foot-Blood” Management Style... Why Solo Entrepreneurship is Becoming the Norm in Korea

- Moon Il-suk, Publisher

What is the meaning behind the phrase "a bird's-foot's worth of blood" (an idiom often used to describe something negligible or tiny)? Lately, however, I have grown very fond of this expression. Why? Birds evolved to fly freely through the open sky. If their legs held a large volume of blood, it would have hindered their ability to fly with agility. Consequently, the avian species evolved over generations to minimize the blood in their legs—a desperate evolutionary adaptation for survival. There is a four-character idiom in Hanja for this: *Jojokjihyeol* (鳥足之血). Composed of the characters for "bird" (鳥), "foot" (足), "of" (之), and "blood" (血), it literally translates to "a bird's-foot's worth of blood."

News reports frequently state that around one million small businesses in Korea close down every year. Amidst this climate, I am reminded of the "bird's-foot-blood" management style. A bird's-foot's worth of blood... that is precisely what allows a bird to take flight. To survive in the realm of self-employment, one must emulate the bird. If a group effort isn't feasible, one must go it alone with fierce determination. Only by becoming as light as a bird's-foot's worth of blood can one soar. Most self-employed individuals in Japan run their businesses solo; their operations have evolved to be lean and minimal—like that "bird's-foot's worth of blood." Korea, too, is shifting toward solo entrepreneurship as the dominant trend.

In Korea’s self-employment sector, the number of "self-employed individuals without employees"—business owners who operate alone without hiring staff—has surpassed 4.2 to 4.3 million, firmly establishing itself as the prevailing trend. While the formula for success used to be expanding the business by hiring more staff, the current trend favors "downsizing for an upgrade" and "one-person operations"—strategies that maximize efficiency and the chances of survival. The rise of the "solopreneur" (one-person business owner) in South Korea’s self-employment sector stems from a combination of two factors: the grim reality of shifting to a one-person operation out of sheer necessity due to economic downturns, and the strategic move to restructure in alignment with digital technologies and changing market trends.

Why have one-person businesses become the norm? It is a survival strategy to withstand economic recession and the shock of rising labor costs. Operating alone allows business owners to avoid the financial burdens associated with minimum wage hikes and mandatory weekly holiday allowances. Amidst a recession driven by high inflation, labor costs have become the most daunting fixed expense for self-employed individuals. With declining revenues, hiring staff carries a high risk of slipping into the red; consequently, there has been a surge in owners letting go of employees and taking on the entire workload themselves—a shift driven by the need to make ends meet. The formula for survival during a recession has shifted from maximizing profits to minimizing fixed costs and building a structure that ensures long-term viability.

Technology has also facilitated this trend toward "solo operations." The widespread adoption of unmanned and automated technologies—enabling a single person to run a store smoothly—has fueled the rise of one-person startups. Self-service kiosks and table-side ordering systems played a significant role, while the introduction of serving robots replaced the need for staff dedicated to taking orders and delivering food. IoT (Internet of Things) technology enabled the expansion of unmanned businesses—such as laundromats, cafes, and meal-kit shops—that can be controlled remotely via smartphone. Furthermore, the growth of online shopping malls (like Smart Stores) and delivery platforms has made it possible to launch a one-person business online using nothing more than a laptop, eliminating the need for a physical storefront. Unlike the past, when middle-aged and older individuals started businesses out of sheer necessity for a livelihood, there has recently been a significant surge in one-person enterprises driven by the interests and expertise of young people in their 20s and 30s. Rather than investing massive capital, they prefer "zero-capital" or "low-capital" startups that minimize risk by leveraging their own expertise, micro-SaaS, Instagram e-commerce, and YouTube. This trend aligns with their desire to build independent brands while working flexibly, free from the constraints of traditional organizations.

I am the president of a media company. I publish and distribute weekly newspapers such as *Weekly Hyundai* and *Sageon-ui Naemak* (The Inside Story), and I operate the online news outlet *Break News*. My media group employs a relatively small workforce—comprising about 100 people in total, including some 15 headquarters staff and freelancers, and around 85 regional staff—consisting only of a select few elite employees. There was a time when the headquarters alone employed over 100 people. The "law of bird-leg evolution"—a metaphor for drastic downsizing—is currently playing out in the media industry. I am running the business on a shoestring—or what we call "a drop in the bucket" (*sae-bal-ui-pi*).

Birds soaring through the open sky fly alone; no one supports them. They are unencumbered. One-person entrepreneurship is akin to this "shoestring management" style. Since I work alone, I don't have to worry about labor unions or the emotional stress that can come with managing employees. The "drop-in-the-bucket" survival strategy is, in essence, the method for running a one-person business. You must be willing to pour out everything you have in order to survive in business. Hahaha...

Amidst all this, I—the owner of the media company—write everything myself. I have no secretary, no company car, and no chauffeur. I clean the office and even the restrooms myself. I do everything on my own. That is how I live. And so, I have come to really love the phrase "bird’s-foot blood" (meaning a mere drop in the bucket or a trifle) and the "bird’s-foot blood style of management" associated with it. Like birds chirping as they fly freely through the sky, I am fully enjoying "freedom of the press." That is why I have grown fond of this "bird’s-foot blood" management style... Hahaha...

It’s a bit embarrassing to admit in writing, but for decades, I didn’t wear thermal underwear—or even undershirts, briefs, or socks. Why? I simply couldn't bear the waste: the cost of soap to wash them, the time spent washing and drying them, and even the time spent putting them on and taking them off. I cut and cut back on every expense related to my own upkeep. It was a desperate, meager strategy—shedding body fat and weight just to survive and, ultimately, to fly freely through the open sky. The capitalist world is a truly terrifying place. Even after all that effort, this is how I live. Hahaha...] moonilsuk@naver.com
