**Professor Yoo Jeong-yeom of Korea National University of Cultural Heritage Wins Grand Prize at the 21st Exhibition of Works by National Heritage Artisans**

Professor Yoo Jeong-yeom (Visiting Professor at the Institute of Traditional Culture Education, Korea National University of Cultural Heritage) won the Grand Prize—the highest honor, awarded by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism—at the "21st Exhibition of Works by National Heritage Artisans," hosted by the Korea Heritage Service and organized by the Association of National Heritage Artisans.

The "21st Exhibition of Works by National Heritage Artisans" showcases a total of 106 pieces, including works by artisans in the field of national heritage conservation and graduates of specialized training programs. The exhibition is being held from September 9 to 12 at the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO) in Gyeongju, the ancient capital, with the opening ceremony taking place at 10:30 AM on the 10th.

Now in its 21st year, this exhibition is a premier event where visitors can appreciate the skills and craftsmanship of the artisans who have dedicated themselves to the field of national heritage conservation. Notably, this year’s event is held concurrently with the "World Heritage Industry Expo"—the nation's largest comprehensive exhibition in the heritage sector, themed "From Heritage to Industry." This simultaneous hosting creates a meaningful platform to highlight the value of traditional techniques and explore their potential for industrial development. ▲ The Grand Prize-winning work at the 21st Exhibition of Works by National Heritage Artisans, *Gwaneum Eunghwa Beopseong Banyado* (Avalokitesvara’s Manifestation and the Dharma-Nature Prajna), and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award presented to Professor Yoo Jeong-yeom ©

Professor Yoo Jeong-yeom’s Grand Prize-winning entry is a relief-style mounted work titled *Gwaneum Eunghwa Beopseong Banyado* (Avalokitesvara’s Manifestation and the Dharma-Nature Prajna). The piece encapsulates the artisan's long-honed mastery. It embodies the compassion and truth of Buddhist art by featuring an exquisitely colored image of the compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, flanked at the top by the full text of the *Beopseong-ge* (Song of the Dharma-Nature) from the *Hwaeom Ilseung Beopgye-do* (Diagram of the One-Vehicle Dharma Realm of the Avatamsaka Sutra) and the *Heart Sutra*.

The work achieves a noble elegance by combining the profound historical significance of a collaborative painting and calligraphy piece by three giants of the modern and contemporary Korean art world—Woljeon Jang Woo-sung, Hyeonlim Jeong Seung-seop, and Namseok Lee Seong-jo—with Artisan Yoo Jeong-yeom’s seasoned mounting expertise.

Professor Yoo applied a traditional relief-mounting technique that lifts the artwork three-dimensionally from the backing surface. This approach highlights the sculptural form of the *Hwaeom Ilseung Beopgye-do*—which arranges the image of Avalokitesvara and the *Beopseong-ge* within a 54-angle diagrammatic path—in a three-dimensional manner. To fully preserve the dignity of the original work, he strictly adhered to traditional methods throughout the entire production process, utilizing carefully selected materials such as traditional *hanji* (Korean paper), silk, aged wheat starch paste, and woods like Japanese cedar and red cedar. For Professor Yoo Jeong-yeom, who has quietly submitted works to this exhibition over the past decade—winning awards such as the Cultural Heritage Administration Administrator’s Award, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism President’s Award, and the Korea National University of Cultural Heritage President’s Award—this Grand Prize represents the culmination of recognition for the mounting skills and craftsmanship he has honed over many years.

*Baecheop* (mounting) is a traditional technique for processing calligraphy and paintings—originally created on paper or silk—into forms such as hanging scrolls, framed pieces, folding screens, and albums, thereby enhancing their aesthetic value, practicality, and preservation. The term *Pyogu* (表具), widely used today, originated from the Japanese term *Hyōgu*; in the Korean tradition, the craft was historically referred to as *Janghwang* (裝潢) or *Baecheop* (褙貼).

A native of Jindo, South Jeolla Province, Professor Yoo has dedicated nearly half a century to the field of traditional mounting; he established the "Yu-a-dang" studio in 1981 and was designated a Certified Artisan for Cultural Heritage Repair (No. 953) in 1987. He served three consecutive terms as a specialist committee member for cultural heritage and held directorships at the Manhae Literature Museum (within Manhae Village at Dongguk University) and the Cheongdam Memorial Hall (at Doseonsa Temple on Mt. Samgaksan). Furthermore, he has safeguarded the preservation of traditional heritage by serving in various roles—including Chief of Public Relations, Director, and Auditor—for the Association of National Heritage Artisans, as well as serving on the Sacred Artifacts Preservation Committee of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

Notably, Professor Yoo’s son, Dr. Yoo Dong-yong, has conducted research on the traditional papers of three East Asian nations—Korean *Hanji*, Chinese *Xuanzhi* (Seonji), and Japanese *Washi* (Hwaji)—at the University of Science and Technology of China, specializing in the history of science and technology and archaeological science. He became the first Korean to earn a doctorate from the University of Science and Technology of China with his thesis, "A Scientific Study on Traditional Mounting and Backing Techniques for Calligraphy and Paintings in Korea, China, and Japan." Dr. Yoo noted that his dissertation was the first across the three nations to conduct a comparative study of their traditional papers. This work is particularly noteworthy as it extends the scope of traditional materials and techniques—historically passed down through the hands-on experience of artisans—to the realm of scientific analysis.

Upon receiving the award, the artisan humbly attributed his success to his predecessors, stating, "I am who I am today thanks to the senior artisans who preserved the lineage of tradition over the years and passed down their invaluable skills and craftsmanship." He also pledged to view the honor not merely as a source of joy, but as both encouragement and a call to action—urging him to faithfully pass on the tradition of mounting and backing to the next generation while advancing the craft further.

In the hands of artisan Yoo Jeong-yeom, the craft of mounting and backing transcends the simple act of attaching and decorating old calligraphy and paintings. It is a process of restoring paper and silk damaged by the passage of time and conveying the spirit of one era to the next.

Alongside his father—who has honed his manual skills in the field for nearly half a century—Dr. Yoo Dong-yong is researching the traditional papers and mounting techniques of Korea, China, and Japan through the language of science. This represents a convergence point where modern research analyzes the wisdom, materials, and techniques that have been handed down through artisan experience.

This Grand Prize signifies more than just an award for a single artisan; it poses fundamental questions about what should be preserved in its original form and how—through what language and techniques—it should be transmitted to future generations. As long as the artisan’s touch and spirit are passed on to the hands of the next generation, our tradition will endure and thrive, spanning a thousand years into the future. artwww@naver.com
