Allegations of Lobbying for a New Drug... Those Trying to Cover the Sky with Their Hands!
- Lee Yang-seung, Professor at Kunsan National University
It is time for the people of South Korea to truly wake up. Even more absurd than the "allegations of lobbying for a new drug" is the attitude of the Democratic Party. One wonders just how little regard they have for the public to attempt something as futile as trying to cover the sky with their hands. No matter how uninformed or politically indifferent the public may seem, people are perceptive. Furthermore, damning audio recordings are surfacing day after day. Under these circumstances, the party should have taken the initiative to form an internal corruption investigation team and proposed a joint probe with the opposition.
Yet, the Democratic Party is doing the exact opposite; they act as if there is no problem at all. While it is natural to show loyalty to one's own side, their handling of these lobbying allegations compels one to ask: When did the Democratic Party become a shield for the vested interests? Let us be frank. One might concede that, depending on the situation or vested interests—and acknowledging that politics is, after all, a way to make a living—a party might occasionally act as a shield for certain established powers. However, it must never become a shield for corruption.
What is interesting is that not only conservative media but also outlets like the *Kyunghyang Shinmun* and *Hankyoreh* view this matter seriously. The *Kyunghyang Shinmun* criticized the Democratic Party's response, likening it to "attacking the finger pointing at the moon because the finger is dirty." The point is that while the method by which Representative Han Dong-hoon obtained the investigative materials is a separate issue, that fact does not make the allegations surrounding Candidate Kim disappear.
Moreover, the report by the *Hankyoreh* contained details that are difficult to simply overlook. During questioning by the prosecution, former Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) Commissioner Kim Gang-lip reportedly stated that it was rare for a lawmaker to single out a specific product and ask for special attention, and that mentioning an individual company was even more exceptional. Although he initially claimed he had given no such instructions, he reportedly acknowledged the fact after the prosecution presented evidence showing that the relevant information had been conveyed to the official in charge via an aide.
The clinical trial approval process for Genencell itself is also subject to scrutiny. According to reports, the treatment faced multiple requests for supplementary data prior to approval, and the issue of submitting false data was even raised in court proceedings. Given these circumstances, if a sitting lawmaker requested expedited processing from the MFDS commissioner, it is only natural to verify whether that call influenced the review process.
Yet, strangely, the Democratic Party’s focus is fixed on the whistleblower, Han Dong-hoon, rather than the substance of the allegations. Terms like "scandal over handing over prosecution investigative files," the "Han Dong-hoon case," and the "final chapter of politicized prosecution" are being bandied about. This is a classic diversionary tactic—attacking the messenger to discredit the message.
The process behind the prosecution's final decision, in particular, requires clear clarification. Multiple reports confirm that the investigation team at the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office had reported a plan to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in August 2024 to indict Nominee Kim and demand an eight-month prison sentence. Subsequently, on December 27 of that year, a final decision of "suspension of indictment" was issued. This actually simplifies the matter: they need only disclose the process that led to that decision. There is no reason to reject a special prosecutor or an independent investigation if necessary. If Nominee Kim has done nothing wrong, that would serve as the ultimate vindication.
What the Democratic Party needs to protect right now is not just Kim Seung-won as an individual. At stake are the national regulatory system for new drug approvals, the integrity of public officials, and the principle of equality before the law. If the belief spreads that money, connections, and calls from political circles can fast-track access to regulatory agencies, the ultimate victims are the public and companies that work hard and play by the rules. This is because only those companies that wait patiently while adhering to established procedures end up looking like fools. This is the very definition of privilege and vested interests.
If the Democratic Party prioritizes protecting its own over uncovering the truth regarding these allegations, it should never again speak of the "common people," "ordinary citizens," or the "livelihood of the public." Political views may differ, but there should be no partisan, conservative-progressive, or left-right divide when it comes to corruption. Instead of trying to silence Han Dong-hoon, the Democratic Party needs to open the door to a full investigation into the allegations surrounding Kim Seung-won. yslee1992@hotmail.com
