A joint workshop was held to share the current status and future plans of key projects and to accelerate the pace of the Saemangeum development initiative.

On the 9th, the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency (SDIA) hosted the workshop at the Haenaru Hotel in Buan, North Jeolla Province, bringing together officials from central and local governments as well as relevant agencies involved in the project.

This workshop, an annual event held since 2017, aims to strengthen communication and cooperation among the participating organizations.

Approximately 150 working-level officials from 17 organizations—including the Saemangeum Project Support Group (under the Office for Government Policy Coordination), the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Forest Service, the Jeonbuk Regional Office of Environment, the Gunsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeollabuk-do, the Jeonbuk Development Corporation, and the cities of Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan—attended this year's event. Participants shared their respective agencies' plans regarding Saemangeum's development direction and key issues, and engaged in in-depth discussions on cooperative measures to expedite the project's progress.

Discussions and presentations by the participating agencies focused on key tasks directly linked to Saemangeum's future competitiveness, including the direction of revisions to the Saemangeum Master Plan; Hyundai Motor Group's future business projects in robotics.

AI, and hydrogen; plans to expand power infrastructure; water quality management measures for Saemangeum Lake; and plans for developing the Second Industrial Complex and selling lots in the waterfront city.

The participating agencies agreed on the importance of a cooperative system that seamlessly integrates all aspects of the project—ranging from investment attraction and infrastructure development to corporate support and the creation of livable environments—and pledged to maintain open communication and collaboration.

During a special lecture on robotics and AI, the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement explained that the need for manufacturing innovation integrating robotics and AI is growing due to intensifying labor shortages and an aging workforce in manufacturing, alongside rising demand for process automation.

The institute emphasized that combining AI with robotics—going beyond simple automation—is essential to elevating production efficiency to a global standard, adding that manufacturing innovation driven by robotics and AI would serve as a key driver for enhancing the competitiveness of the local manufacturing sector.

Nam Young-woo, Deputy Administrator of the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency, emphasized, "Saemangeum is rapidly emerging as a hub for South Korea's future growth and a center for global economic cooperation," adding that "inter-agency collaboration is essential to establishing it as a prime model of 'region-led growth.'"

He continued, "We will do our utmost to pool the capabilities of each agency and strengthen communication, thereby enhancing our capacity to drive the Saemangeum project forward in a way that attracts corporate investment and allows the public to tangibly experience the changes."

Kim Cheol-tae, Director of the Saemangeum Marine and Fisheries Bureau at Jeollabuk-do, urged relevant agencies to join forces in devising strategies for Saemangeum's development and creating an environment that encourages not only Hyundai Motor Group but also a wider range of companies to invest in the region.

Buan County Mayor Kwon Ik-hyun stated, "Moving forward, Saemangeum must go beyond merely expanding the scope of development based on its new master plan; it needs to establish a foundation for future industries—such as robotics, AI, hydrogen, and renewable energy—and evolve into a hub of tangible growth where businesses, jobs, and quality living conditions harmonize."

He added, "Balanced development, where Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan grow together by leveraging their respective strengths and local characteristics, is crucial," noting that "Buan possesses abundant renewable energy resources, a pristine natural environment, and diverse tourism assets."

Furthermore, he called for "continued interest and cooperation from relevant agencies to ensure this potential translates into business attraction, job creation, and improved living conditions."

He emphasized, "Since Saemangeum cannot be completed through the efforts of a single entity alone, I expect that the pace of transformation will accelerate when the planning agencies, project implementers, and local governments responsible for the area meet frequently to share ideas and join forces."

In closing, he pledged, "Buan-gun will serve as a steadfast partner to Saemangeum, actively contributing to inter-agency cooperation and faithfully fulfilling its role to ensure that Saemangeum’s achievements translate into tangible benefits for the local community and the lives of its residents."

He added, "I hope today’s workshop serves as a valuable opportunity to jointly shape the future of Saemangeum and accelerate its next great leap forward, while also allowing everyone to fully enjoy Buan’s beautiful scenery and relaxed atmosphere."
