Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Holds On-Site Meeting at Jeonnam Sports Middle & High School… “All-out Effort to Foster Professional Athletic Talent”
Superintendent Kim Dae-jung Makes Surprise Visit to Training Site… Promises Improvement of Aging Facilities and Preparation of Customized Comprehensive Measures; Achieves Remarkable 121 Gold Medals at National Competitions This Year… Major Overhaul of Sports Support System in Line with Launch of Integrated Office of Education
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education has embarked on a series of on-site communication initiatives to establish a long-term plan for regional sports education, aligning with the trends of local government and education integration.
On the 7th, the Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education visited Jeonnam Sports Middle & High School, a cradle for nurturing future athletic talent, and held an on-site meeting with members of the educational community, including school sports team officials, coaches, and parents. During the meeting, they intensively discussed measures to revitalize school sports teams and provide systematic support. This site visit was decisively organized to encourage the hard work of student athletes and coaches who are steadfastly honing their skills even amidst record-breaking heatwaves, while also directly listening to the practical difficulties facing the sports field and seeking effective solutions.
Jeonnam Sports Middle and High School specializes in fostering school athletic teams across a total of 19 disciplines, including track and field, swimming, archery, taekwondo, and wrestling, with the goal of cultivating integrated athletes equipped with core future competencies, upright character, and overwhelming skill.
In particular, the school has firmly established itself as a key hub for nurturing athletic talent in Korea by demonstrating top-tier capabilities—such as sweeping up a whopping 121 gold medals at various national competitions held this year—combined with a systematic training system, the passion of the coaches, and the sweat of the student athletes.
The meeting was attended by a large number of officials, including Superintendent Kim Dae-jung and other Office of Education officials, as well as the head of the Parents' Association, coaches of school athletic teams by sport, and school officials. Attendees candidly shared the difficulties encountered in managing athletic teams and engaged in collaborative discussions on multifaceted support measures to establish a sustainable sports education environment.
Coaches and parents attending the meeting strongly urged the Office of Education to provide immediate and substantial budgetary support. This support included the rapid replacement of aging training facilities and equipment, and the creation of a safe training environment comparable to an athletes' village, so that student athletes could fully showcase their skills without the risk of injury.
Kim Kyung-woo, Principal of Jeonnam Sports Middle and High School, emphasized, “The outstanding achievements our students demonstrated on the national stage this year are the result of the sweat they shed without giving up, even in challenging environments.” He added, “Systematic support for sports science and the establishment of a stable training environment are urgently needed for student athletes to grow into world-class athletes representing Korea beyond the local region.”
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Office of Education plans to go beyond passively listening to the urgent voices from the field gathered at this meeting and actively incorporate them into the overall physical education policies to be established by the integrated office. In particular, aligning with the historic turning point of educational integration between Jeonnam and Gwangju, the Office of Education is embarking on a major overhaul of the sports support system to consolidate the sports infrastructure and know-how of both regions. The Office has decided to strengthen specialized sports education programs designed to maximize expertise in specific disciplines and to swiftly concretize comprehensive, customized measures that encompass everything from discovering new athletes to their career paths after retirement.
Superintendent Kim Dae-jung stated, “I express my deep gratitude to the student athletes who have elevated the status of Jeonnam and Gwangju education nationwide through their unrivaled achievements and brilliant results, as well as to the coaches and parents who have steadfastly supported them from behind.” He promised, “I will carefully examine every single voice from the field without missing a single one, and I will spare no administrative or financial support to ensure our students can focus solely on training and academics in a safe and pleasant environment.”
Meanwhile, after concluding the meeting, Superintendent Kim Dae-jung personally toured key on-campus sports facilities and training grounds, shaking hands with student athletes sweating it out and offering warm words of encouragement.
