Today, we immerse ourselves in dazzling 3D virtual worlds not only through computers but also through the small screens of smartphones in our hands. Connecting with others with the touch of a button and experiencing another life in virtual space is no longer unfamiliar. We are living in an era where the virtual world created by games blends with the reality of everyday life.

In the approximately 80-year history of video games, where technology has realized imagination, a pioneering example can be cited: the patent for a cathode ray tube (CRT) entertainment device filed in 1947. The concept involved manipulating an electron beam on a screen to hit a target. Five years later, in 1952, A. S. Douglas of the University of Cambridge implemented the Tic-Tac-Toe game, OXO, on the EDSAC computer. It was an early computer game in which a human competed against a computer by taking turns marking O and X on a 3×3 grid.

Subsequently, in 1962, the space combat game "Spacewar!" was implemented on the PDP-1. The initial draft was created by Steve Russell of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) research group, with Martin Graetz and Wayne Wiitanen participating in its development. Peter Sampson added background programs that reflected actual constellation data. This game was an early masterpiece that combined the cutting-edge symbolism of space with the tension of dogfights.

Amidst the emergence of various games that followed, the world's first home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, appeared in 1972, allowing games to be enjoyed on a home TV. At the center of this transition was the insight of Ralph Baer, a TV engineer working at the defense contractor Sanders Associates at the time. However, Baer himself stated that the concept of TV games was unrelated to the company's development of military electronics.

He continued his experiments with colleagues Bill Harrison and Bill Rusch, developing the "Brown Box" in 1968, a prototype that served as the basis for the Odyssey, the first commercial home game console that allowed direct manipulation of the television screen. It was from this foundation that the first console game system, the Magnavox Odyssey, was born. The Odyssey was composed of circuits using individual transistors and diodes, without microprocessors, memory, or sound chips. It was a transition that brought games to the home TV screen.

The first home console to commercialize interchangeable ROM cartridges was the Fairchild Channel F, released in 1976. The product that expanded this method to a large market was the Atari VCS, released in the United States in 1977. The Atari VCS popularized a software ecosystem that supplied multiple games to a single piece of hardware, changing the business model of the game industry.

The subsequent 1980s and 1990s were a turbulent period in which video games transcended simple entertainment to establish themselves as a core element of global popular culture. "Pac-Man," a maze-exploration arcade game developed in 1980 under the leadership of game designer Toru Iwatani at the Japanese video game company Namco (now Bandai Namco), was a monumental work that led to the popularization of arcade games. Iwatani conceived of a bright and non-violent game to lower the barrier to entry for arcades, which at the time were dominated by men and shooting games, and to attract a broader user base including women and couples.

The Famicom, introduced by Nintendo in Japan in 1983, and the NES, released in North America in 1985, revived the market that had shrunk due to the Atari Shock, featuring vivid characters and intricate stage designs by the standards of the time. There are many stories to be found in the history of Nintendo. It originated from Nintendo Koppai, a workshop that produced Hanafuda, a traditional Japanese card game.

Considering this history of Nintendo, its origins become even more intriguing. According to data compiled by the author, the production of Hanafuda, which had been banned since the Edo period, was legalized in 1886 when merchant Maeda Kihei secured confirmation of its sale through negotiations with the police. Three years later, in 1889, Yamauchi Fusajiro, known as a craftsman, opened a Hanafuda manufacturing workshop in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto. This marked the beginning of Nintendo.

In 1902, the Golpai Tax Law was enacted, establishing a system that required government licenses for the manufacturing and sales of playing cards and imposed taxes on them. Nintendo also began manufacturing Western-style playing cards in the same year. Subsequently, in 1947, Marufuku Co., Ltd., the predecessor of today's Nintendo Corporation, was established; the company name changed to Nintendo Golpai Co., Ltd. in 1951 and then to Nintendo Corporation in 1963. Under the leadership of Hiroshi Yamauchi, the founder's great-grandson who took office as president in 1949, Nintendo succeeded in manufacturing Japan's first plastic playing cards in 1953 and began mass production. In 1959, the company pioneered the children's market by releasing playing cards featuring Disney characters.

The business of the company, which had started by manufacturing play tools, expanded into electronic games. It introduced a home TV game console in 1977, the arcade game "Donkey Kong" in 1981, and the Famicom in Japan in 1983. The NES, which began sales in New York in 1985, and "Super Mario Bros.", released in Japan that same year, contributed significantly to the recovery of the North American home video game market. A company that started by manufacturing Hanafuda cards had grown into a leading player in the global video game industry.

Side by side with the growth of home game consoles, dedicated sound cards such as AdLib and Sound Blaster became widespread in IBM PC compatible systems in the late 1980s. FM synthesized music and digital sample sound effects greatly expanded the auditory expression of PC games. Entering the 1990s, video games opened the door to a completely new dimension of space and networks. 'Doom,' developed by id Software in 1993, offered an immersive experience in the DOS environment that felt as if one were roaming through a real space. It also widely popularized a new gaming culture where multiple people connected computers to compete against each other in the same virtual space. Subsequently, Sony's 'PlayStation,' which appeared in 1994, led the popularization of real-time 3D graphics in home console gaming.

These advancements in graphics and network technology, combined with the tradition of earlier text-based multiplayer games (MUDs), ushered in the era of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), continuing through 'Ultima Online' and 'EverQuest' in the late 1990s and 'World of Warcraft' in the 2000s.

In the 21st century, changes in video games are leading the global trends. Steam transformed the distribution of packaged software into a digital format, while app stores and smartphones brought gaming into the realm of everyday life. Furthermore, Nintendo Wii’s motion recognition, Pokémon GO’s augmented reality (AR), Twitch’s streaming culture, and the recent rise of spatial computing and cloud gaming are evolving beyond mere entertainment into a cultural culmination that combines experience, sharing, and viewing.

I place importance on the various facts embedded in the history of games and Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency that walks a tightrope between the mirage of human history and an eternal artificial gem.

Games were a significant cultural space that allowed the public to experience digital goods and the virtual economy. This experience shares a certain connection with the social imagination that embraces virtual assets today. However, the direct technical foundation of Bitcoin must be found in public-key cryptography, proof-of-work, and distributed networks.

Early Bitcoin participants Hal Finney had a background in console game development, while Gavin Andresen started in the field of 3D graphics software. In his memoirs, Hal Finney revealed that he mined blocks in the 70s and received 10 Bitcoins sent by Satoshi as a test. Andreessen became the chief maintainer of Bitcoin's open-source software after Satoshi's disappearance.

Of course, while this does not constitute a direct link between Bitcoin and games, there are instances where games have provided direct intuition to computer science research. Online task placement research involving Amos Fiat and others drew inspiration from the block placement method of Tetris. However, this is a separate achievement from Fiat's cryptographic research.

In this way, video games have provided decisive hints and inspiration for humanity to build a vast digital society encompassing security, data, and the virtual economy. Just as truly preposterous scenes from old science fiction cartoons have undeniably emerged as real-world transformations today, the arrival of the virtual world unfolded by increasingly sophisticated video game scenes is truly breathtaking.

The important fact is that the core driving force realizing such a virtual world is the semiconductor industry. Just as big tech companies like Meta are striving to secure hundreds of thousands of super-performance AI semiconductors to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and virtual worlds, games and virtual civilization are now constructing yet another new wonder in human history upon the physical foundation of semiconductors.

Then, where exactly are video games and humanity's digital civilization headed?

If the history of games we remember has passed through the rectangular frames of TVs or monitors, I am convinced that the coming future will be an era where the very boundary of the screen disappears, allowing the virtual and the real to meet directly.

This is a civilizational shift brought about by the rapid advancement of conversational AI. Generative AI reads the player's intentions and reactions in real time, constantly recreating the environment of the virtual world. Furthermore, in-game characters (NPCs) are no longer mere puppets mechanically repeating predetermined lines. They are "intelligent companions" that share a deep bond by remembering my choices, actions, and even my manner of speaking.

...will come to exist as such. Ultimately, an era is dawning where the virtual world within games and the reality we breathe are no longer separate realms, but intertwined like two sides of a coin.

Quantum computers, often called the apotheosis of scientific civilization, remain a distant goal. However, if ultra-high-speed computation and microscopic physical simulations become a reality, the boundary between the virtual and the real world may ultimately crumble.

Today, the world is conducting research on various technologies, ranging from limited game manipulation using Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) and Li-Fi communication utilizing light, to mixed reality that utilizes the entire space, and haptic devices that transmit touch and temperature. If sensory technologies including scent and touch are combined, the gaming experience could expand from being audiovisual-centric to a physical experience.

However, the maturity and potential for widespread adoption of these technologies vary, making it difficult to predict when a single integrated system will be realized. Nevertheless, considering the reality currently developing, the arrival of an era of boundaryless reality and emotional computing cannot be denied.

In an era where culture and technology converge, how will human existence change? Will humans remain the masters of technology, or will they become beings who adjust themselves to the choices presented by algorithms? Upcoming games could become a foundation for life where one explores new possibilities, interacts with others, and expands their own world.

However, whether that world becomes a space that expands human freedom depends not on the technology itself, but on the humans who choose and control it. artwww@naver.com
