Deukchon Jincheok (Gaining an Inch Advancing a Feet)—Do Not Mistake the Consideration of Others for Your Own Rights!

- Noh Byung-han, Saju and Feng Shui Columnist

[Noh Byung-han’s Fountain of Wisdom: A Philosophy of Effective Life] Deukchon Jincheok means, "Once you gain an inch, you seek to advance another foot." It is a warning against the attitude of not stopping after the other person makes a concession, but demanding more, and treating a temporary favor bestowed by another as a right you are entitled to.

People are grateful when they first receive help. However, if the same help is repeated, they become accustomed to it, and if that familiarity lasts a long time, it turns into taking it for granted. Eventually, when consideration diminishes, they forget the favor and instead express disappointment and dissatisfaction.

Therefore, the mindset to guard against most in human relationships is taking things for granted rather than lacking. Those who recognize their shortcomings can be grateful, but those who take everything for granted will never be satisfied, no matter how much they receive.

** Consideration is something given voluntarily, while rights are something legitimately guaranteed. Although consideration and rights may appear similar, their nature is fundamentally different. Rights must be legitimately guaranteed according to laws, contracts, promises, and community norms. In contrast, consideration is a favor voluntarily bestowed by the other person, who concedes some of their own time, interests, and convenience. While rights can be demanded, the original meaning of consideration is diminished the moment it is demanded.

Just because someone waited for you once does not mean you are allowed to be late every time. Just because a mistake was overlooked once does not mean you are allowed to repeat the same error, and receiving help during a difficult time does not make you entitled to receive help in the future.

The moment consideration is mistaken for a right, the order of the relationship collapses. The giver becomes exhausted, the receiver becomes dependent, and mutual trust gradually erodes. True rights stand alongside responsibility, but rights misunderstood combine with desire. If one claims only their own share and fails to see the sacrifices the other person bears, rights turn into greed.

** ▲ Columnist Noh Byung-han © Dr. Noh Byung-han

Why do expectations outweigh gratitude when acts of kindness are repeated? The human mind adapts quickly to repetitive environments. Help that initially felt special becomes part of ordinary daily life if it continues. As psychological standards rise, the consideration received yesterday transforms into the minimum share one is expected to enjoy today.

The problem lies in the fact that the person receiving the consideration often fails to see the hidden costs behind it. The fact that someone else is spending time on their behalf, enduring losses, and suppressing their emotions is not readily apparent on the surface. The person receiving the consideration enjoys the results, while the person providing it bears the cost. If this difference is not grasped, gratitude diminishes while demands increase.

Those who mistake consideration for a right exhibit the following three changes:

First, expressions of gratitude diminish.

Second, they prioritize their own needs without inquiring about the other person's circumstances.

Third, if the favor is discontinued, they feel betrayed.

However, the disappearance of consideration is not a betrayal. Sometimes it is because the other party’s circumstances have changed, and sometimes it is about rebuilding the boundaries of a broken relationship.

First, an example from the political sphere—a single concession does not constitute a permanent stake.

Politics requires coalitions and compromises. Ahead of an election, political parties or forces may concede candidates or share specific positions and roles for the sake of a common goal. Such concessions are strategic choices made in consideration of the political landscape at the time.

However, conflict arises when temporary consideration is mistaken for a permanent political stake. If one demands the same position in the next election simply because they were given a nomination once, or if they regard the positions held during the coalition process as rights guaranteed to their faction, cooperation turns into a privilege.

Political consideration must serve a common purpose for the people. It must not become a means to solidify the vested interests of specific individuals or factions. Politicians who have received concessions must first reflect on whether they have fulfilled their responsibilities.

If they rely solely on past achievements or the rewards of the coalition without gaining the trust of the people, it becomes not an exercise of rights, but an act of repeatedly demanding political debts. Politics that remembers consideration fosters solidarity, but politics that demands consideration as a right breeds factions and division.

Second, an example from the business world—do not regard crisis support as a permanent privilege.

The same thing happens in business-to-business transactions. When a client is in trouble, you may extend delivery deadlines, make advance payments, or temporarily adjust pricing terms to their advantage. This is a gesture of consideration to maintain the cooperative relationship.

However, if the recipient company begins to regard these as standard terms of business, trust is shaken. If they expect understanding after repeatedly missing deadlines, or demand additional support without fulfilling their responsibility to improve management after receiving emergency assistance, the goodwill quickly becomes a burden.

The same applies within the company. Just because management provided an autonomous work environment and special compensation during the early stages of a startup does not mean that all benefits must be maintained unconditionally once the organization's circumstances and performance have changed. However, the company must not unilaterally change its promises; it must clearly distinguish between contractual rights and voluntary considerations and transparently explain the reasons for any changes.

**Politics that remembers consideration fosters solidarity, but does not demand that consideration be demanded as a right?** Good corporate relationships are not maintained by the sacrifice of one side. The party receiving help must repay it with competence and responsibility, and the party providing help must not use consideration as a pretext for domination and control.

Gratitude follows consideration, trust follows contracts, and responsibility follows rights.

Third, an example from the entertainment industry—Do not mistake public applause and consideration for eternal privileges.

In the entertainment industry, the invisible consideration of countless people accumulates for the success of a single individual. The production team adjusts schedules, fellow actors rehearse their lines, and managers and staff guard the set day and night. Fans send their interest and support for a long time.

▲ Gaining an inch advances a foot—Do not mistake the consideration of others for your own rights © AI-generated image

Even those who were initially grateful for such help may mistake the consideration from those around them for special treatment stemming from their status as their popularity rises. If you assume everyone must wait despite repeated filming delays, demand that the staff resolve even minor inconveniences, and regard fans' love as unconditional loyalty, popularity becomes a seat of arrogance.

However, public applause is not a possession. It is a sentiment that must be earned anew moment by moment through one's work, attitude, trust, and responsibility. If an entertainer's talent is the light, then the production team, colleagues, staff, and audience are the spaces prepared for that light to shine. The moment one mistakenly believes they are shining alone, they lose people, and if they lose people, the stage cannot be sustained for long.

Those who remember consideration are respected even after their popularity fades, but those who mistake consideration for a right lose even their own position the moment the applause stops.

Fourth, even those who are considerate must set boundaries.

One should not conclude that the fault lies solely with those who mistake consideration for a right. Sometimes, a considerate person fosters false expectations by failing to clearly state their standards. If one continues to allow a single exception without any explanation, the other person may accept it as a new rule. If you pretend to be fine on the outside while suffering inwardly, and then suddenly cut off the relationship later, the other person will also experience confusion. Therefore, consideration requires boundaries along with warmth.

“I can help this time, but it will be difficult next time.”

“This is not an obligation, but a consideration that takes into account each other’s circumstances.”

“To continue helping, you must also keep your promises and responsibilities.”

In this way, you must clearly state what you can and cannot do. Proper boundaries are not walls that sever relationships, but fences built to ensure the relationship lasts.

The Wisdom of Consideration Read Through People, Time, Position, and Circumstances—Even matters of consideration can only be judged correctly by examining the people, time, position, and circumstances together.

① You must look at the person. You must determine whether they are someone who repays the help they received with gratitude and responsibility, or someone who exploits the consideration to demand greater benefits. It is more important to observe whether their subsequent behavior changes than to simply express gratitude verbally.

② You must read the timing. When someone is in distress, open the door to help; however, once they are able to stand on their own, you must change your method of assistance. While continuing to help may appear to be an act of goodwill, excessive assistance can deprive them of the opportunity to become self-reliant.

③ You must discern your place. Family, friends, organizations, businesses, and public offices each have different boundaries of responsibility and authority. Bringing considerations from private friendships into public settings results in favoritism, while prioritizing public principles over personal difficulties can lead to a drying up of compassion.

④ You must assess the situation. Even if it started as a small favor, repeated actions can tilt the balance of the relationship. If a trend emerges where demands increase while gratitude decreases, you must re-establish standards and boundaries before it is too late.

Fifth, examine the order of relationships by supplementing them with Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, Feng Shui, and physiognomy.

From the perspective of Yin and Yang, consideration does not mean simply opening the door unconditionally. Yang is the power that opens hearts and opportunities to help, while Yin is the power that establishes principles and boundaries to be upheld. If you only open up, relationships overflow; if you only close up, compassion is bound to dry up. One must distinguish when to help and when to stop, and when to speak and when to remain silent.

From the perspective of the Five Elements, each person has a different temperament when it comes to accepting consideration. The temperament of Wood uses help as a stepping stone for growth, but if it is excessive, desires can run wild; the temperament of Fire responds quickly to goodwill but may demand greater emotional attention. Earth values trust but may remain stuck in familiarity, and Metal clearly defines principles and rights, but if taken to extremes, relationships are prone to becoming calculating. Water is flexible in situations, but one must ensure that the flow does not lead to avoiding responsibility. This is not a classification intended to categorize people, but a complementary framework for reflecting on imbalances in relationships.

From a Feng Shui perspective, a good location is where the paths of energy entering and exiting are in harmony. The same applies to relationships. Vitality remains only when help and gratitude, compromise and responsibility are exchanged. If one side continues to give while the other only receives, the flow of the relationship is blocked and the balance of power shifts.

In physiognomy, one should not judge a person solely by their facial features. One must observe their facial expression when receiving consideration, their gaze when expressing gratitude, their demeanor when a request is refused, and their words and actions in keeping promises. If someone smiles when receiving kindness but their complexion and attitude suddenly change when they become wary, one needs to carefully examine whether they are prioritizing personal gain over relationships. However, one should not judge based solely on a momentary expression, but must also look at their repeated words and actions and the fulfillment of their responsibilities.

Sixth, those who return consideration with gratitude enjoy blessings for a long time.

Consideration is not a share one is entitled to receive, but a space in the heart prepared by someone setting aside a small portion of their own. The way to maintain that space for a long time does not lie in demanding more, but in remembering the kindness received and repaying it with responsibility.

If you have been conceded once, you should yield the next time; if you received help in times of difficulty, you should help others when your circumstances improve; and if you have been forgiven for a mistake, you must not repeat the same error.

If you mistake consideration for a right, you lose people;

If you remember consideration as a grace, you gain connections.

Protect your rights with dignity, but accept kindness with humility.

There is no need to diminish yourself just because you have received help,

but you must not become arrogant enough to take that help for granted.

If you have received even a tiny bit of consideration, do not demand an extra inch;

Step back a step and consider the heart and sacrifice the other person has endured.

A person's blessings do not grow from receiving much,

but rather from not forgetting what has been received and giving it back to the world.

A person's greatness is determined not by what they possess, but by the preparation and scale of the future they envision. Great people read the times, while small people read only profit. The size of one's vision determines the size of one's life. He who reads people reads the world, and he who reads the times prepares for and creates the future.
