[Here is the English version of the article] Busan Welcomes 2.92 Million Foreign Tourists in First Seven Months, on Track to Top 3 Million in August

Busan welcomed nearly 2.93 million international visitors in the first seven months of 2026, putting the South Korean port city on track to surpass 3 million foreign tourists as early as August — about two months earlier than last year.

The Busan Metropolitan Government said Tuesday that 2,927,674 foreign tourists visited the city from January through July, up 46.1% from the same period last year, when 2,003,466 visitors were recorded.

The increase far outpaced the national growth rate of 21.3% during the same period, exceeding it by 24.8 percentage points.

Busan has set a goal of attracting 4 million foreign tourists this year and had already reached 73.2% of that target by the end of July.

Visitor numbers continued to climb throughout the summer. In July alone, 507,045 foreign tourists visited Busan, surpassing the previous monthly record of 484,057 set in June. It was the second consecutive month in which the city set a new monthly record.

Foreign visitors to Busan accounted for 24.2% of all international arrivals to South Korea in July, meaning roughly one in four foreign tourists visiting the country also traveled to Busan.

The city expects to have passed the 3 million mark in early August. About 72,000 more visitors were needed to reach the milestone at the end of July, while monthly visitor numbers have recently ranged between 400,000 and 500,000.

The official number of foreign visitors for August will be released later this month.

Busan surpassed 3 million foreign visitors for the first time last year, reaching the milestone in October. This year, the city is expected to reach the same benchmark roughly two months earlier.

Visitors from Taiwan and China accounted for nearly half of Busan's foreign tourists in July.

Taiwan topped the list with 128,000 visitors, followed by China with 125,000, Japan with 49,000 and the United States with 40,000.

The number of Taiwanese visitors jumped 88.3% from a year earlier, accounting for 25.2% of all foreign visitors to Busan in July. Chinese visitors increased 80.3%, making up 24.7% of the total. Together, Taiwan and China accounted for 49.9% of all foreign visitors that month.

For the January-July period, Taiwan ranked first with 605,000 visitors, up 60.1% from a year earlier. China followed with 594,000 visitors, up 88.4%, while Japan recorded 340,000 visitors, an increase of 27.5%.

The United States also posted strong growth. Busan welcomed 259,675 American visitors during the first seven months, up 78.4% from 145,535 during the same period last year.

That growth rate was more than six times the 11.6% increase in the number of U.S. visitors nationwide.

Busan officials said the surge was notable because the city does not currently have a direct flight connection to the Americas, suggesting that Busan is increasingly being chosen as a destination in its own right by long-haul travelers.

A major factor behind the increase has been the growing role of Gimhae International Airport as a gateway to Busan and the wider southeastern region of South Korea.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization's "Korea Tourism Report," 1,014,341 foreign travelers arrived through Gimhae International Airport during the first half of the year, up 46.6% from 691,993 a year earlier. Gimhae recorded the highest number of foreign arrivals among four regional airports — Cheongju, Daegu, Gimhae and Jeju.

The airport's role as a regional gateway was also reflected in where travelers went after arriving.

About 50.2% of foreign passengers arriving at Gimhae stayed in Busan, while 47.9% traveled to nearby areas such as South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan. Only 1.9% headed to the Seoul metropolitan area.

In other words, 98.1% of foreign travelers arriving through Gimhae remained in Busan or elsewhere in the southeastern region rather than continuing on to the capital area.

The rise in international tourism has also translated into higher spending.

Foreign visitors spent 742.3 billion won, or about $540 million, in Busan using credit cards from January through July, a 50.8% increase from a year earlier. Busan ranked second nationwide behind Seoul, where foreign card spending totaled 6.7486 trillion won.

Busan and Jeju, which recorded 343.8 billion won in foreign card spending during the same period, together accounted for 75.2% of foreign spending outside the Seoul metropolitan area.

Medical tourism spending in Busan was particularly strong, rising 118.4% from a year earlier. Busan accounted for 37.0% of medical tourism spending by foreign visitors outside Seoul, ranking first among regional destinations.

The city plans to build on the momentum during the second half of the year with major international events and improvements to its tourism infrastructure.

The 2026 Busan Global Cities Week will take place Sept. 8-10, followed in October by "Festival Shiwol," a monthlong series of events across the city. Other major events include the Busan International Rock Festival on Oct. 2-4, Busan UN Week from Oct. 23 to Nov. 11, and the Global Cities Tourism Summit on Oct. 26-28.

The city also plans to install Visit Busan Pass kiosks at Gimhae International Airport and Busan Station and work with all 16 districts and counties to improve visitor information and signage at major tourist attractions.

Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said the city now needs to focus not only on attracting more visitors but also on encouraging them to stay longer and experience more of what Busan has to offer.

"Last year, it took us until October to reach 3 million foreign visitors. This year, we are on the verge of reaching that milestone in just seven months," Jeon said.

"The fact that 98% of foreign travelers arriving through Gimhae International Airport remain in Busan and the southeastern region rather than heading to the Seoul metropolitan area shows the potential for further growth," he said. "We will not be satisfied with growth in visitor numbers alone. We will focus on extending visitors' stays and spreading tourism spending throughout the region."
