Lebanese Traditional Dance to be Experienced in Gyeongju… 19th Arab Culture Festival to be Held on the 10th

The Arab Culture Festival, commemorating the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Lebanon, will be held in Gyeongju. Through performances by a Lebanese traditional dance troupe, the event aims to introduce the traditional culture of the Levant region, which is rarely encountered in Korea.

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation announced that it will host the "19th Arab Culture Festival" on the 10th at the Munmu Hall of the Gyeongju Expo Grand Park Cultural Center, co-hosted with the Korea-Arab Society under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Lebanese traditional dance troupe "Hayakel Baalbeck" has been invited to the event to showcase representative local traditional dances and culture.

Hayakel Baalbeck is the dance troupe that performed the traditional dance "Dabke" at the welcoming ceremony during Pope Leo XIV's visit to Lebanon last December. Dapke is a folk dance passed down in the Levant region, including Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Palestine. It is characterized by dynamic movements performed by multiple dancers forming a formation.

Prior to the performance, a "Culture Talk" hosted by Egyptian broadcaster Sami Rashad will be held. The talk will explore the history of exchange between Korea and the Arab world, aiming to help the audience better understand Arab lifestyles and traditions.

The venue, Gyeongju, is also noteworthy for its historical background in international cultural exchange. As the former capital of Silla, traces of cultural exchange between East and West can be found in artifacts such as the stone warrior statues at Gwaereung Tomb, the golden sword excavated from the Tomb of King Michu, and glass artifacts from Cheonmachong Tomb. This Culture Talk will cover these historical examples from Gyeongju alongside discussions on Arab culture.

The Korea-Arab Society is a joint public-private organization established in 2008 to expand mutual understanding and exchange between Korea and the 22 member states of the Arab League. Choi Sung-soo, Secretary General of the Korea-Arab Society, stated, “Through this cultural festival, domestic audiences will be able to experience Lebanese traditional culture and art up close, which they do not usually have easy access to,” adding, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to broaden cultural understanding between Korea and the Arab world.”

Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture and Tourism Corporation, said, “I look forward to the introduction of Lebanese traditional culture to Korean audiences, which will further expand the scope of cultural exchange between the two countries,” and added, “I hope this will also help Gyeongju establish itself as an international cultural tourism city where people can experience the cultures and arts of various nations.”

The performance is free to attend, and admission is available via on-site registration on the day of the event. Detailed information about the event can be found on the Gyeongju Expo Grand Park website.
