Rep. Park Ji-won: "Deployment of Non-Combat Troops to Hormuz Is Inevitable... It Cannot Be Done"

Rep. Park Ji-won of the Democratic Party of Korea stated that regarding the issue of troop deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, the situation makes it unavoidable to deploy troops centered on non-combat units.

Appearing on SBS Radio's "Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show" on the 7th, Rep. Park said regarding the deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, "I acknowledge the inevitability that we have no choice but to deploy non-combat troops to some extent," adding, "It cannot be helped."

He evaluated President Lee Jae-myung's decision regarding the troop deployment to the Strait of Hormuz as "a good decision" and, regarding the possibility of the deployment bill passing the National Assembly, said, "Of course, it must be done."

He continued, "Although Iran considers it a war, we must consider the issue of protecting our ships in the Strait of Hormuz and various relations with the United States."

Regarding reports that the government is considering deploying patrol aircraft and explosive ordnance disposal units, excluding logistics support ships, Rep. Park emphasized the need for careful consideration.

"The specific details must be discussed closely between the government and the United States," Rep. Park stated. "We must review the matter carefully, as unconditionally refusing deployment or sending combat troops even if deployed could cause problems in the future."

Regarding the voices of opposition to the deployment from some within the progressive camp, he said, "We must fully understand the position of those within our own camp who have no choice but to oppose it," but added, "Above all, it is a difficult issue that must be resolved well because it concerns our relationship with the United States and national interests."

Furthermore, concerning U.S. President Donald Trump sharing a column on his social media urging the sale of the domestically produced medium-range surface-to-air guided missile 'Cheongung-II' to Ukraine, Rep. Park stated, "We have never supplied lethal weapons to Ukraine from the beginning, but rather engaged in indirect exports. We have never directly exported something like the Cheongung-II."
