Writers Association of Korea Warns, "Do Not Send South Korean Troops to Hormuz"

- Columnist Jung Sung-tae

Amidst President Trump’s continued demands for the deployment of South Korean troops to the Strait of Hormuz, the Lee Jae-myung administration is reportedly seriously considering the deployment. Consequently, concerns are being raised regarding the safety of our military and geopolitical issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula. Iran has also issued a strong warning, stating that it would "consider it participation in a war."

A high-ranking Iranian security and political official took a firm stance in a recent interview with a pro-Hezbollah media outlet in Lebanon, firmly stating, "If South Korea takes action to confront Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, we will consider it a direct military aggression against Iran and participation in a war."

On the 4th, the Committee for the Practice of Freedom of the Writers Association of Korea issued a statement clarifying that "the ROK-US alliance is important," but that "an alliance is not a relationship where one side unconditionally follows the demands of the other." They further argued that "there are plenty of diplomatic means available without sending troops."

He continued, "The Republic of Korea is a nation that has suffered the horrors of colonial rule and war," adding, "We know better than anyone the pain a weak nation endures amidst the hegemonic struggles of great powers." Therefore, he pointed out, "A nation with such a history must not participate in military operations that trample on the independence of other countries."

He also expressed concern, stating, "It is a contradiction to speak of peace and dialogue on the Korean Peninsula while stepping into military conflicts in the Middle East," and added, "This will provide North Korea with a pretext to reinforce the perception that South Korea is joining U.S. extraterritorial military actions, thereby narrowing the diplomatic space necessary for peace on the Korean Peninsula."

Below is the full text of the statement titled "Do Not Send South Korean Troops to Hormuz."

On the 3rd, there was a series of reports that the government was proceeding with preparations to dispatch troops and military assets to the Strait of Hormuz. While the Blue House denied the reports, stating "nothing has been decided," the Ministry of National Defense officially confirmed that it is specifically reviewing plans to dispatch military forces, including maritime patrol aircraft and logistics support ships. This review cannot be dismissed merely by claiming that no final decision has been made. We demand clearly: Do not send South Korean troops to the Strait of Hormuz.

The background of this discussion regarding troop deployment lies in the demands of the United States. The ROK-U.S. alliance is important. However, an alliance is not a relationship where one side unconditionally complies with the demands of the other. While the government cites the protection of ships and navigational safety as justifications, there are plenty of diplomatic means available that do not require sending troops. Whether they are patrol aircraft or support ships, the dispatch of military assets is not a neutral choice.

What we take more fundamentally as an issue is the nature of this deployment. Deploying troops to Hormuz amounts to joining the U.S.'s hegemonic military strategy. Dragging the South Korean military into this plan to blockade Iran and bind Middle Eastern resources and shipping lanes under a U.S.-centric order is no different from conspiring in military actions that infringe upon the autonomy and sovereignty of another nation. The Republic of Korea is a country that has suffered the horrors of colonial rule and war. We know better than anyone the suffering endured by weaker nations amidst the hegemonic struggles of great powers. A nation with such a history must not participate in military operations that trample on the independence of other countries.

The deployment of troops to the Strait of Hormuz is not an issue confined to the Middle East. It is a contradiction to speak of peace and dialogue on the Korean Peninsula while stepping into military conflicts in the Middle East; the consistency and credibility of our peace diplomacy are bound to collapse under its own weight. It will provide North Korea with a pretext to reinforce the perception that South Korea is joining U.S. extraterritorial military actions, thereby narrowing the diplomatic space necessary for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

We remember the Vietnam War and the Iraq War. Whenever the state drove young people to the battlefield under the pretext of economic and diplomatic interests, the price was always their blood and lives. The lives of the people are not bargaining chips.

Article 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea renounces aggressive war and establishes the principle of striving to maintain international peace. What the government must do now is not send warships, but send diplomats. The Korean government must immediately cease reviewing all plans for military contribution to the Strait of Hormuz and clearly declare its position that it will not deploy troops.
