[Column] There Is No 'General' Kim Jong-seo in Janggun-myeon, Sejong City...
When we think of 'Jeoljae Kim Jong-seo,' we commonly recall the stereotypical images of him as the 'Great Tiger of the North' and the 'General who pioneered the Six Garrisons.'
Today, even the place name of the region where he is buried (Janggun-myeon, Sejong City) adopts the title 'General.'
However, if we examine the 'Annals of the Joseon Dynasty' through the lens of historical fact, we witness an interesting truth.
Nowhere in the Annals is there a record referring to Kim Jong-seo as a 'General.'
Kim Jong-seo was not a military officer from the military examination system, but an elite civil official who passed the civil service examination at the young age of 16.
While it is true that he pioneered the northern territories as the Provincial Inspector of Hamgil-do under the deep trust of King Sejong, his true nature was that of a scholar who oversaw the compilation of the *History of Goryeo* and the *Summary of the History of Goryeo*, as well as a Left State Councilor who managed state affairs—in other words, the representative "Grand Chancellor" of Joseon.
The misconception of him as an "armored warrior" imposed by unofficial histories and later mass media has resulted in confining his insight into state management and his experience within a narrow framework.
This is precisely the historical and cultural imperative that a government-standard portrait of the renowned Chancellor Kim Jong-seo must be produced and officially designated.
The imperative that a government-standard portrait must possess lies in
the clear establishment of his historical identity.
We must break away from the distorted or popularized image of a "sword-wielding general" and restore the dignity and noble integrity of a "Grand Chancellor" who possessed both civil and military prowess and led state affairs from the reign of King Sejong to King Danjong.
Standard portraits serve as a standard for future textbooks, portrait halls, and cultural heritage materials, laying the groundwork for standardization to correct distorted images.
This is for the authentic restoration of the portrait style of meritorious subjects from the early Joseon Dynasty.
By preventing the error of indiscriminately applying portrait styles from the late Joseon Dynasty and by perfectly authenticating the clothing techniques—such as the Danryeong, chest badges, headdresses, and sashes—of civil officials in the first half of the 15th century (the reigns of King Sejong and King Munjong), we can maximize historical and art-historical value.
We must achieve the national elevation of regional cultural assets.
The standard portraits produced by the local governments where the burial grounds and birthplaces of the deceased are located in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, along with the Suncheon Kim clan, are merely at the level of honoring a family grandfather.
However, a "National Symbolic Heritage" approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea is a matter of a completely different dimension.
It is an opportunity for this to become a historical and cultural achievement of Sejong City, where the title has become the name itself.
Therefore, a government process for the production and designation of standard portraits is necessary. To pass the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's strict 'Regulations on the Review of Portraits and Statues,' the local government and the clan (Suncheon Kim Clan Association), rather than a single individual, must take the lead in implementing the step-by-step procedures.
The steps are as follows:
Stage 1: Collection of Historical Materials and Basic Research
Discovery of Appearance and Physique: Collection of historical records describing physical appearance, such as the *Annals of the Joseon Dynasty* and contemporary literary collections, which describe the subject as "large and possessing a tiger-like demeanor."
Research on Contemporary Artifacts: Analysis of the composition of portraits of meritorious subjects from the early Joseon period, such as Shin Suk-ju and Kwon Je, as well as the painting techniques of the early Joseon era.
Verification of 15th-Century Official Attire: Thorough verification of the forms of the civil official attire (Danryeong), Samo (hat), chest badge, and sash from the reigns of King Sejong to King Munjong (complete exclusion of late Joseon styles). Stage 2: Selection of Professional Artist and Production of Portrait
**Appointment of Professional Artist:** Appointing an authority on Korean painting capable of employing traditional portrait painting techniques such as Baechaebeop (a technique of applying color to the back of silk to allow it to seep through subtly) and Yukrimunbeop (a technique for expressing skin texture in detail).
**Consultation on Preliminary Sketch and Completion:** After revising the sketch following consultation with historians and the clan, proceed with coloring.
**Stage 3: Application for Review by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism**
**Applicant:** The head of a local government or organization submits a designation application to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
**Submitted Documents:** Original portrait, statement of production history, documentary evidence regarding attire and historical records, artist profile, etc.
**Stage 4: Strict Review by the Portrait and Statue Review Committee**
**First Review (History/Costume):** Verification of official attire, jewelry, and the consistency of the historical period based on historical records. Second Review (Artistic Merit): An assessment of the painterly perfection of the "Transmitting the Spirit and Capturing the Portrait," which captures even the inner spirit of the subject.
Third Review (Revision and Supplementation): A process of repeated rejection and re-production spanning several months to address identified errors.
Final Approval and Publication in the Official Gazette: Upon passing, a designation number is assigned, followed by registration as the official "Government Standard Portrait."
Bringing "General Kim Jong-seo," confined to unofficial histories, back to the true "Grand Chancellor Kim Jong-seo" of history—
The first step in this endeavor must begin with a single Government Standard Portrait that captures the breath and dignity of the era through thorough historical verification.
This will become the alias for Sejong City, a city that must embrace culture and history.
