Japanese band ChoQMay, who are widely loved in Korea for their hit song "I Want to Be Your Lover," are visiting Korea for a solo concert. This performance marks their first visit in approximately two years since their first solo concert in Korea in December 2024 and is scheduled to take place on January 23, 2027, at the YES24 Wonderrock Hall in Sinchon.

According to their agency's official profile, ChoQMay's signature song "I Want to Be Your Lover" has garnered over 1 billion views on TikTok and achieved viral success across various Asian countries. ChoQMay took the stage on the 19th at Soundberry Festa '26,' one of Korea's major indoor music festivals held at KINTEX in Ilsan from July 18 to 19, where they captivated the audience with their unique vocals and solid live performance. Urara, a musician who plays both guitar and violin with mastery as the band's vocalist, garnered attention by releasing a Korean version of "I Want to Be Your Lover," as if to reciprocate the support of her Korean fans. At the recent Soundberry Festa '26,' she performed this song in Japanese as her second act and in Korean as her final, eleventh act.

Chokumei, a band with a unique sensibility that transforms unfamiliar sensations into universal songs, was formed in 2020 and has been active primarily in Tokyo. On September 5 of the same year, they released their first single, "Teach Me," and held their first live performance at DaisyBar in Shimokitazawa on September 15. Since then, they have continued with EP releases and nationwide tours, and expanded their scope of activities in February 2022 by releasing "March Bride," the opening theme song for the MBS drama "Sweat and Soap." The band name "Chokyumei" is borrowed from "Jugemu," a classic of Rakugo, a form of traditional Japanese storytelling. It is a humorous tale about parents wishing for their child's longevity who, unable to choose a single word with auspicious and positive meanings, string them all together. The story is well-known for the tale where a friend, who later suffered a bump on the head from being hit by the child, comes to complain, but the bump disappears completely as the adults repeat the child's long name. One of those long names, "Jokyumei," means "long-lasting life." By adopting this name, the band embodies the meaning of not remaining confined within the framework of a specific genre, but rather sustaining their own unique musical vitality for a long time.

The birth of the band Chokyumei stems from the musical history built by main vocalist Urara since her high school days. In the spring of 2020, when the opening of her music school was postponed due to COVID-19, Urara gathered members to secure a space to create her music. She began band activities with the participation of Renpi and Koichiro Kuga, and in the autumn of 2021, Gon Fujii joined the group after the original bassist left. Fujii was a classmate of Urara's from high school, having played in a band together and won a competition.

The musical roots of each member were distinct: Urara possessed not only songwriting skills but also guitar, violin, and emotional vocals; Renpi was rooted in R&B and fusion jazz; Kuga had experience with classical percussion and rock; and Fujii enjoyed anime music. It was these diverse musical backgrounds that formed Chokyumei's unique sound. Their first full-length album, *Surudoisakure*, was released in June 2022 and was selected for Tower Records’ recommended project, *Tower Recomen*, in the same month. *Tower Recomen* is a project where Tower Records buyers nationwide select noteworthy artists and albums through presentations and voting, introducing them in stores across the country.

Currently, Chokyumei has been reorganized into a two-member system consisting of Urara and Kuga Koichiro, but they continue to collaborate with various supporting musicians. Urara, who writes and composes most of the songs, delivers a sophisticated performance featuring vocals with delicate sensibility and violin and guitar playing. In addition, Kuga Koichiro’s precise and dynamic drumming firmly supports the ensemble.

What caught my attention was Urara’s free expression and stage energy. Rather than flaunting technical virtuosity, her strength lies in expanding the emotions of the lyrics through her timbre, breath, and free movements. Without relying on standardized choreography, they fully immerse themselves in the moment on stage, breathing naturally with the audience.

Their music traverses genres such as rock, pop, jazz, and classical, showcasing unexpected developments. However, it possesses a characteristic of transforming into universal emotion through intuitive lyrics and melodies that blend Urara’s exuberance and lyricism. Their signature song, "I Want to Be Your Lover," which captures contrasting emotions—such as fairytale-like beauty and the loneliness within a racing melody—within a single track, has garnered attention and empathy across borders.

While reviewing the full performance video of Chokyumei at the Soundberry Festa '26' held at KINTEX in Ilsan last July, the audience's enthusiastic response to the stage was impressive. That sight reminded me of the meaning of communication and exchange through music.

Their upcoming solo concert in Korea, scheduled for January 23, 2027, at the YES24 Wonderrock Hall in Sinchon, Seoul, is drawing significant attention. This performance marks the final stop of the ‘Starlight Map Tour,’ which connects Seoul with the three Japanese cities of Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, and is the first stage held approximately two years after the group’s first solo visit to Korea in December 2024. We hope this serves as a meaningful opportunity for audiences from Korea and Japan—countries that are close yet distant—to respect and understand one another through music. artwww@naver.com
