— Lee Je-hang, Senior Reporter/Poet, Break News
On September 4, the leadership of the People Power Party, including Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk and Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik, strongly criticized allegations of solicitation and bribery against Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won, demanding the withdrawal of his nomination and his immediate resignation.
Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk pointed out Kim’s solicitation for approval of new drug clinical trials and his history of drunk driving, emphasizing that he must take responsibility for this personnel disaster and step down voluntarily. Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik urged the National Assembly to disclose information transparently regarding the government's review of deploying troops to the Strait of Hormuz, while also criticizing the administration's management style. Subsequently, the party leadership launched an offensive across a wide range of pending issues, including pushing for a parliamentary investigation into single-stock leveraged ETFs.
Remarks and Message by Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk
Allegations of Solicitation and Bribery Against Justice Minister Nominee Kim Seung-won... Demands for “Resignation and Withdrawal of Nomination”
First, People Power Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk launched a strong offensive to force the downfall of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won, who is embroiled in allegations of soliciting approval for clinical trials for a new COVID-19 drug. Regarding Kim’s explanation that he was merely conveying a legitimate “grievance,” Leader Jang pointed out, “A proper lawmaker would have met with the pharmaceutical company employee to assess the situation first and requested prompt processing from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety,” adding, “It was not a complaint from a small or medium-sized enterprise, but a solicitation by a broker.” Representative Jang pointed out the circumstances in which Nominee Kim met with a broker at a bar to discuss campaign contributions and sent his account number via text message, criticizing him by asking, “If this is not a promise to offer a bribe, then what on earth is it?” He continued to urge, “Nominee Kim is not even qualified to go to a confirmation hearing. He must either resign immediately or President Lee Jae-myung must withdraw the nomination,” warning that “Nominee Kim Seung-won will become a nuclear bomb that brings down the Lee Jae-myung administration.”
Attack on Nominee Kim Seung-won’s Morality by Highlighting ‘Father-Daughter Nomination’ and Drunk Driving History
Representative Jang Dong-hyuk escalated his attacks by raising additional allegations surrounding Nominee Kim Seung-won. Referring to the ‘father-daughter nomination’ controversy from a past local election, Representative Jang pointed out, “A 24-year-old woman who had never been active in Gyeonggi Province received the number one spot on the proportional representation list for the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly and was elected.” Pointing out that Candidate Kim, who was the provincial party chairman at the time, pushed through the nomination of Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly member Seo In-ha—daughter of Blue House Speech Secretary Seo Yong-min—despite opposition, the speaker sarcastically asked, "Is a ministerial position the result of meticulously taking care of even the daughter of a Blue House secretary?" Furthermore, citing Candidate Kim's past record of receiving a 700,000 won fine for drunk driving while serving at the Suwon District Court, the speaker argued that he lacks the qualifications to be a ministerial candidate.
Ruling Party Leadership and Accompanying Officials Launch Collective Barrage at Candidates Kim Seung-won and Yong Hye-in, Calling Them "Ultimate Shameless"
The leadership and key figures of the People Power Party also bolstered Representative Jang Dong-hyuk's offensive, pressuring the two ministerial candidates to resign. During the meeting, Kim Mi-ae, the Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy, pointed out the situation regarding the suspension of clinical trials and the investment and stock price fluctuations of related companies immediately following Candidate Kim's request for approval. She sharply rebuked him, saying, "President Lee, who said that stock manipulation leads to ruin, should first uncover the Kim Seung-won Gate." Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon also argued for the necessity of a special prosecutor investigation, stating, “Nominee Kim is someone who should be going to the Uiwang Seoul Detention Center, not the Ministry of Justice.”
Meanwhile, regarding the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, Yong Hye-in, Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong pointed out, “Amidst ceaseless controversy, she is becoming the target of ridicule as the ‘Family Income Party’ and ‘Privileged Person.’” Policy Committee Chair Lim I-ja urged, “The public’s judgment on Kim Seung-won, who is accused of bribery, and Yong Hye-in, the ‘Family Party’ that monopolizes privilege, is already over. Withdraw the nomination by the weekend.”
Remarks and Message by Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik
Regarding the deployment to the Strait of Hormuz and the abnormal atmosphere in the ROK-US alliance, “Government must transparently disclose its current status to the National Assembly”
First, People Power Party Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik emphasized the importance of National Assembly consent regarding the government’s move to review the deployment of troops to the Strait of Hormuz and declared a stern response. Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik stated, “Sending our military personnel overseas is not a matter to be decided lightly and requires careful consideration,” and demanded, “The government should not be testing the waters with the opposition party but must come before the National Assembly and transparently disclose the status of the Strait of Hormuz and ROK-U.S. relations.”
Referring to U.S. President Trump’s expression of dissatisfaction, Floor Leader Jeong pointed out, “It is a clear missed opportunity for our government to belatedly begin reviewing troop deployment after having already lost the trust of the United States.” He went on to revisit pending issues, such as the reduction of ROK-U.S. joint military exercises and the Coupang scandal, raising his voice by saying, “The content of the dialogue between the two countries regarding the abnormal atmosphere in the ROK-U.S. alliance felt by the public must be transparently revealed.”
Ahead of Confirmation Hearings, He lashed out, “Candidate Kim Seung-won is unqualified; the current administration shows symptoms of severe power addiction.”
Furthermore, regarding the confirmation hearings for ministerial nominees scheduled for the third week of September, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik pledged thorough verification while demanding the immediate withdrawal of the nomination of Candidate Kim Seung-won. Floor Leader Jeong criticized, “It constitutes a massive conflict of interest for someone granted a suspended indictment in a bribery case to become the Minister of the department responsible for prosecution.” He added, “It is a national tragedy that, in addition to the President who is a defendant, a Minister of Justice with a suspended indictment has also taken office.”
Furthermore, Floor Leader Jeong pointed out to the current administration, “Although the lame duck period has already begun, they are unfortunately exhibiting symptoms of power addiction bordering on severe.” Citing the infringement of the right to recommend Supreme Court Justices, the forced abolition of supplementary investigation powers, and irresponsible, detached rhetoric as representative symptoms of this power addiction, he urged, “They must show a humble attitude before public sentiment and re-examine loan regulations and unconstitutional demands for re-referrals from scratch.”
Promotion of National Election Commission reform bills and remarks by the leadership… “Pushing for Bold Reforms Thanks to the Dedication of Youth and Citizens”
Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik expressed his determination to normalize the electoral system while discussing the ‘Bill to Safeguard Citizens’ Right to Participate,’ a reform proposal for the National Election Commission (NEC), at a policy caucus held on the 3rd. In his opening remarks, Floor Leader Jeong conveyed deep gratitude, stating, “The driving force that enabled us to push through a parliamentary investigation into the NEC and a special prosecutor for the people, as well as to push for NEC reform, was thanks to the dedication of the youth who protected Olympic Park and the citizens.”
Furthermore, regarding the Democratic Party’s insistence on a one-point constitutional amendment, he criticized them, saying they are “sneakingly exploiting the NEC issue as a pretext for a constitutional amendment aimed at securing a consecutive term.” He emphasized, “Unless President Lee Jae-myung’s trial resumes, discussions on a constitutional amendment are impossible, and we will boldly reform the NEC within the framework of the current Constitution.” At the general meeting of lawmakers on this day, a draft amendment to the Public Official Election Act and the National Election Commission Act was reported, which includes the abolition of early voting, the holding of two days for the main election, and the abolition of the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of the National Election Commission. Further opinions were gathered to propose the bill as the party's official stance.
Remarks by the leadership at the People Power Party's floor strategy meeting
Policy Committee Chairperson Lim I-ja (State investigation into single-stock leverage ETFs and current issues)
First, Policy Committee Chairperson Lim I-ja announced at the floor strategy meeting that the People Power Party would submit a request for a state investigation to uncover the truth behind the single-stock leverage ETF scandal.
Chairperson Lim pointed out, “The essence of this situation is the hasty introduction of a dangerous product to shift losses onto individual investors,” adding, “Suspicions of a dark connection are growing, including the lightning-fast dismissal of former Policy Chief Kim Yong-bum and the fact that the children of supervisory officials work at Mirae Asset Management, which collected commissions for the product.” She then urged, “The Democratic Party must immediately cooperate with the parliamentary inquiry to uncover the truth.”
She also criticized the dysfunction of semiconductor and labor policies. Chairman Lim stated, “KEPCO is considering a plan to build power grids by receiving 25 trillion won in advance electricity payments for five years from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix due to a lack of funds, and U.S. trade pressure is intensifying.” She ordered, “Instead of merely paying lip service to AI semiconductors, prepare practical measures first.”
She then proposed, “Let’s prepare alternative legislation to supplement the ‘Yellow Envelope Law’ and begin discussions at the joint meeting of the ruling and opposition parties on livelihood policies on September 15.” Furthermore, declaring that “Nominees Kim Seung-won and Yong Hye-in are the epitome of shamelessness,” he sharply demanded, “President Lee Jae-myung must withdraw the nominations of the two by this weekend.”
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong (Failure of Personnel Vetting and Reduction of Local Government Grants)
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong criticized the government's personnel vetting system, pointing out various allegations surrounding ministerial and Supreme Court justice nominees. Secretary General Jeong stated, "The morality and fairness do not meet the public's expectations at all, citing allegations of lobbying the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety by the Minister of Justice nominee, suspicions regarding a sublease of a Gangnam apartment using a brother-in-law's influence by a Supreme Court Justice nominee, and the controversy over unfairness concerning the Minister of Gender Equality and Family nominee." He demanded, "Stop testing the public's patience any further and immediately withdraw the nominations of these controversial candidates."
He further criticized the issue of local finances, noting, "With the government establishing the Future Response Fund, general local government grants are expected to decrease by approximately 30.5 trillion won nationwide, with the reduction for North Gyeongsang Province alone amounting to 4.7 trillion won." He then pointed out, “They speak of relocating public institutions in public, but are kicking away local fiscal autonomy behind the scenes,” and emphasized, “We will resolutely correct any attempts to reduce grants during the review process of the 2027 budget bill.”
Kim Seung-soo, Senior Deputy Floor Leader (Regional Discrimination Policies and Relocation of Public Institutions)
Kim Seung-soo, Senior Deputy Floor Leader, pointed out that the Lee Jae-myung administration’s education and balanced development policies are turning into politically motivated regional division. Deputy Leader Kim stated, “It is incomprehensible that Kyungpook National University, which is overwhelmingly superior in domestic and international evaluations and base population size, was excluded from the Ministry of Education’s selection for the ‘10 Seoul National Universities Package Support Universities,’ while Pusan National University, Chungnam National University, and Chonnam National University were selected.” He criticized the criteria as “a ‘predetermined answer’ style evaluation standard that had specific regions in mind from the start.”
He further demanded, “The Ministry of Education must transparently disclose the evaluation indicators and selection process regarding this blatant bypassing of specific regions.” In addition, regarding the announcement of the relocation of public institutions to provincial areas, she warned, “We have absolutely no idea what criteria or procedures are being followed,” adding, “If the principles are distorted by allocating them according to the government’s whims, they will not escape the condemnation of history.”
Kim Mi-ae, Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy (Urging the Resignation of Nominees Kim Seung-won and Yong Hye-in)
Kim Mi-ae, Senior Deputy Floor Leader for Policy, strongly urged the resignation of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won and Gender Equality and Family Minister nominee Yong Hye-in. Regarding nominee Kim Seung-won, Deputy Floor Leader Kim criticized him, stating, “The transcripts related to the alleged solicitation at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the plunge in Sejong Medical’s stock price, and the suspicion of collusion with the warrant review judge are allegations of illegal solicitation, not public interest petitions.” She added, “It is preposterous for a figure who spearheaded the abolition of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation authority to become the Minister of Justice.”
She further argued, “President Lee must withdraw the nominations and thoroughly uncover the truth through a special prosecutor.” She then urged regarding nominee Yong Hye-in, stating, “She has enjoyed salaries and state subsidies funded by taxpayers’ money while advocating for the ‘right not to work.’ Since a figure who habitually engages in privileged politics—such as joining a satellite party and holding dual positions as a minister and a lawmaker—cannot be entrusted with a cabinet position, her nomination must be withdrawn immediately.”
Bae Jun-young, Secretary of the Finance and Economy Planning Committee (Economic Policy and Confirmation Hearing)
Ahead of the confirmation hearing for Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs nominee Lee Hyung-il, Secretary Bae Jun-young announced that he would focus on scrutinizing the government’s fiscal and tax policies as well as plans for reforming public institutions. Secretary Bae criticized, “The government’s approach of expanding total spending to 820 trillion won next year while shifting the burden of inflation onto the Bank of Korea’s interest rate hikes amounts to presenting a double bill to the people.”
He also stated, “We will address the reversed tax reform plans, such as the withdrawal of the ISA contribution limit and the subsequent withdrawal of the plan to lower the Comprehensive Real Estate Tax deduction for non-resident single-home owners.” Regarding the government's announcement of the plan to reform the functions of public institutions, she pointed out, "The Public Institutions Management Committee approved the plan within just one hour of opening," adding, "The damage from this hasty implementation, lacking sufficient cost-benefit analysis and consultation with stakeholders, will fall on the public."
Lee In-sun, Secretary of the Education Committee (Prevention of Regional Conflict Over the Establishment of a New Medical School)
Secretary Lee In-sun urged the government to take balanced measures regarding the recommendation of Suncheon University in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions as a candidate for the establishment of a new medical school. Secretary Lee noted, "Both Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam are representative medically underserved areas lacking tertiary hospitals and having weak infrastructure for essential medical services," and emphasized, "We must not incite conflict by framing the establishment of a new medical school as a competition between regions." She further demanded, "The government must not hesitate and responsibly review both Suncheon University and Kyungpook National University as alternatives to resolve the regional medical gap."
Cho Eun-hee, Secretary of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee (Criticism of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Budget Proposal)
Secretary Cho Eun-hee criticized the drastic increase in funding for the "Youth Culture and Arts Pass" project within the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's budget proposal for next year. Secretary Cho pointed out, "Although they plan to increase the budget 22-fold from 36.1 billion won to 792.5 billion won and expand the target group 33-fold, the existing project has failed to fulfill its purpose of revitalizing fine arts, with 63% of usage concentrated on the top 30 blockbuster movies." She further rebuked the government, stating, "Paying for tickets to blockbuster films with tax money without verifying their effectiveness is a populist act of vote-buying for the general election," and urged them to "shift their direction to investing in the production infrastructure of culture and arts."
Kang Myung-gu, Secretary of the Public Administration and Security Committee (Absence of Police and Prosecution Chiefs and Government Disruption)
Referring to the President's remarks criticizing the police organization, Secretary Kang Myung-gu criticized the government's neglect of personnel matters in return. Secretary Kang pointed out, “It is irresponsible to demand painful self-reform while operating under an acting police commissioner system without appointing a Commissioner General for one year and eight months.” He continued, “With the launch of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency approaching and large-scale withdrawals of prosecution personnel continuing, the Prosecutor General has also not been appointed for over a year,” urging, “Stop the show of rebuking others through live-streamed meetings and properly appoint the heads of state agencies first.”
Yoo Young-ha, Secretary of the Intelligence Committee (North Korea Trends and Establishment of Security Perspectives)
Secretary Yoo Young-ha warned of a security crisis stemming from the recent reshuffling of North Korea’s military leadership and the revision of its Party Charter. Secretary Yoo noted, “North Korea has replaced its Minister of National Defense and removed the concepts of unification and nation from its Party Charter, thereby institutionalizing a ‘two-state policy.’” He added, “In this situation, it is dangerous to see confusion within the government, such as Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young advocating for a ‘peaceful two states.’” He emphasized, “We need a cool-headed assessment of reality that upholds the principles and security of the Republic of Korea, rather than policies tailored to North Korea.”
Baek Jong-heon, Secretary of the Health and Welfare Committee (Pointing out flaws in the Basic Pension reform plan)
Secretary Baek Jong-heon criticized the problems with the 2027 Basic Pension reform plan announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare point by point. Secretary Baek pointed out, “The additional amount resulting from differential payments for the bottom 30% income bracket amounts to a mere 21,000 won per month, while 2.9 million seniors in the bottom 45% to 70% bracket will have their benefits frozen without any increase,” adding that “it is merely ‘lower pay for the lower’ rather than ‘higher pay for the upper’.” Furthermore, he warned of rigorous scrutiny during the National Assembly’s deliberation process, noting that “despite the rapid increase in financial requirements, long-term supply and demand structures and financing plans are missing.”
Jeong Dong-man, Secretary of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee (Urging Acknowledgment of Real Estate Policy Failure)
Secretary Jeong Dong-man identified real estate policies as the cause of the decline in President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating and demanded a policy shift. Secretary Jeong criticized, "Blaming critics via social media after modifying the Comprehensive Real Estate Tax reform plan is amateur administration and sophistry." He also urged for an acknowledgment of policy failure and bold deregulation, stating, "Actual supply will only increase if the floor area ratio for private reconstruction and redevelopment is relaxed to 1.3 times, the same as for public projects, and regulations such as the mandatory supply of small housing units are completely abolished."
Seo Il-jun, Secretary of the Political Affairs Committee (Urging a State Affairs Investigation into Single-Stock Leverage ETFs)
Secretary Seo Il-jun reiterated the need to clarify responsibility regarding the process of introducing single-stock leverage ETFs. Secretary Seo argued, "Financial authorities have failed to provide a convincing explanation regarding the decision to introduce the product and investor protection measures," adding, "A state affairs investigation is essential to clearly reveal the reporting system between the Blue House and financial authorities, as well as whether specific financial institutions were involved." He then urged the government and the ruling party, saying, “Do not turn a blind eye to the damages suffered by individual investors, and join the parliamentary investigation.”
Park Hyung-soo, Secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee (Criticism of the Jang Yoon-ki Case and Nominee Kim Seung-won)
Referring to the indictment in the Jang Yoon-ki case, Secretary Park Hyung-soo emphasized the necessity of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation authority and the unsuitability of Nominee Kim Seung-won. Secretary Park criticized, “It was thanks to the prosecution’s supplementary investigation that the police leadership’s attempts to downplay the case were corrected and the truth of the rape-murder was revealed,” adding, “It makes no sense for Nominee Kim Seung-won, who spearheaded the bill to abolish this supplementary investigation authority, to become the Minister of Justice.” Furthermore, regarding the allegations of soliciting favors from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, he pressured Nominee Kim to decide his own future, stating, “There is precedent that if money (sponsorship money) is involved in a solicitation, it constitutes an illicit transaction and bribery.”
Koo Ja-keun, Secretary of the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee (Trade Pressure on the U.S. and Investment Policy)
Secretary Koo Ja-keun criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration, stating that its efforts to build political achievements have resulted in trade pressure on businesses. Koo explained, “U.S. Commerce Secretary Rutnick is strongly pressuring domestic companies to invest in the U.S. by mentioning the introduction of semiconductor tariffs.” He urged, “The government’s public announcement of investment amounts, with companies standing in the background, has become easy prey for the Trump administration,” adding, “The government must immediately re-examine its trade strategy to prevent damage to our companies.”
Kang Sun-young, Secretary of the Gender Equality and Family Committee (Verification of Candidate Yong Hye-in’s Ideology and Qualifications)
Secretary Kang Sun-young took issue with the ideological foundation and national perspective of Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family. Presenting a past card news, Secretary Kang argued, “Forces advocating for the ‘right to be lazy’ and ‘basic income without labor’ are seeking to nationalize the three factors of production and destroy the liberal democratic market economy.” She then pointed out, “A person who disregards hard-working citizens and holds ideologies that undermine the market system is not qualified to be a Cabinet member of the Republic of Korea.”
Choi Hyung-doo, Secretary of the Science, Technology, Information and Communications Committee (Broadcasting AX Strategy and Cloud Support)
Secretary Choi Hyung-doo proposed structural reforms for the broadcasting and media industry and support measures for the AI transition (AX). Pointing out that “while the opposition party obsessed only over broadcasting governance structures, terrestrial broadcasters faced a crisis due to deteriorating profitability,” Secretary Choi emphasized that “what the National Assembly must focus on is the innovation of broadcasting technology structures.” He further stated, “We will actively support media companies in building an AX foundation at reasonable costs by providing broadcasting, newspaper, and media clouds utilizing domestically produced AI semiconductors (NPU) as public assets.”
Lim Jong-deuk, Secretary of the National Defense Committee (Demand for Statement on Deployment to the Strait of Hormuz)
Secretary Lim Jong-deuk demanded a clear explanation regarding reports that the government is considering deploying troops to the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary Lim stated, “Reports have emerged that the Lee Jae-myung administration, which has opposed troop deployments until now, is considering deploying specific military assets such as maritime patrol aircraft and logistics support ships.” He added, “I cannot help but point out the wavering behavior of foreign policy and ask why their stance has changed despite no change in the situation.” Accordingly, he demanded an emergency meeting to review pending issues at the National Defense Committee level and called for an official position from the government.
Statements and announcements by People Power Party committees, special committees, spokespersons, etc.
Senior Deputy Floor Leader Kim Seung-su and Policy Committee Chair Lim I-ja (Demand for Parliamentary Investigation into Single-Stock Leverage ETFs)
First, the deputy floor leadership delegation of the People Power Party, including Senior Deputy Floor Leader Kim Seung-su and Political Affairs Committee Secretary Seo Il-jun, submitted a request for a parliamentary investigation as the party's official stance. The request aims to identify responsibility for market distortions and losses incurred by individual investors caused by specific single-stock leverage ETFs, and to establish measures to prevent recurrence. They urged for a rigorous investigation.
After submitting the request to the National Assembly Bill Division, Senior Deputy Floor Leader Kim Seung-su met with reporters and emphasized, "According to tracking investigations by specialized agencies, losses caused by single-stock leverage ETFs exceed 56 trillion won." He added, "Since this situation involves many citizens, the ruling party has no reason or justification to oppose it." Kim further demanded, "We expect and urge the ruling party to promptly agree to the parliamentary investigation, and furthermore, if problems are discovered, to immediately agree to a special prosecutor."
At the same time, the People Power Party stated in a written request that it would thoroughly investigate the specific circumstances surrounding the demand for the introduction of the product to the Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed by former Presidential Chief of Staff Kim Yong-bum in a media interview this past January, the extent of his involvement in the subsequent policy-making process, suspicions regarding whether the FSC and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) raised concerns about caution and how that process was handled, and allegations of collusion with financial institutions.
Furthermore, the party set forth a policy to clearly analyze the correlation between the timing of the product's introduction and expansion and the period leading up to the 2026 local elections, as well as whether political objectives, such as boosting the capital market, were prioritized over investor protection procedures.
Additionally, Policy Committee Chair Lim I-ja, addressing former Chief Kim's resignation at the party's floor strategy meeting on the same day, criticized the move, stating, "Suspicions are growing that this is a Korean version of 'cutting off the tail' intended to conceal a dark connection between policy power and the financial industry." Chair Lim added, "We will clearly uncover the truth through a parliamentary investigation."
Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Media Committee (Allegations of State Affairs Manipulation by the Presidential Office Personnel Line and Chief of the First Secretariat Kim Hyun-ji)
Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the People Power Party's Media Committee, cited remarks by a ruling party official to raise suspicions that the actual personnel line within the Presidential Office is Chief of the First Secretariat Kim Hyun-ji, and demanded that President Lee Jae-myung clearly reveal the reality of these "closed-door" appointments. Chairperson Lee pointed out, "Director Seo Yong-ju, a former full-time deputy spokesperson for the Democratic Party, stated on a broadcast, 'Is there a personnel line? The personnel line is Kim Hyun-ji, isn't it?'" She added, "This indicated just how much real power Chief of the First Secretariat Kim Hyun-ji wields, to the extent that other panelists hurriedly intervened, saying, 'This broadcast will be canceled.'"
Chairman Lee asserted, “The reason those around the ruling party perceive Chief of Staff Kim as the de facto leader of the personnel line is that his power has already been confirmed,” adding, “Last December, a scene was captured in which Kim Nam-kuk, Secretary for Digital Communication, responded to a request for a personnel appointment by saying, ‘I’ll recommend her to Hyun-ji.’” She continued, “It appears that a staff member working with him naturally perceived him as the person in charge of personnel matters,” and warned, “If Chief of Staff Kim is leading personnel appointments from behind the President, this is not merely an abuse of power, but a serious manipulation of state affairs.”
Chairman Lee further demanded, “The Presidential Office must disclose the extent to which Kim Hyun-ji, Chief of the First Presidential Secretariat, was involved in the recommendation process for Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won and Gender Equality and Family Minister nominee Yong Hye-in.” She demanded, “Explain to the public who the personnel involved were, whether they participated in personnel meetings, and whether they had direct contact with the nominees.”
Chief Floor Spokesperson Kim Tae-gyu (Call for Verification of Justice Minister Nominee Kim Seung-won's Qualifications and Resignation)
Chief Floor Spokesperson Kim Tae-gyu pointed out the past actions of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won, who has spearheaded the withdrawal of indictments in cases involving President Lee Jae-myung, and called for the immediate resignation of the nominee, stating that he has lost his political neutrality and fairness. Kim pointed out, “Nominee Kim Seung-won stated that he has no intention of directing the withdrawal of indictments in President Lee’s case and that he would respect the authority of individual prosecutors.” He added, “However, Nominee Kim has characterized the cases involving President Lee as ‘fabricated indictments’ and has repeatedly called for their withdrawal; furthermore, in February of this year, he served as a co-representative of the lawmakers’ group pushing for the withdrawal of indictments and led the activities.”
Chief Spokesperson Kim criticized, stating, “The Minister of Justice is a position that must uphold the rule of law and the fairness of the criminal justice system, free from political interests.” He added, “It is illogical for a figure who demanded the withdrawal of indictments with a predetermined conclusion to claim responsibility for the political neutrality of the prosecution.” He continued, “Nominee Kim has neither retracted his previous remarks nor stepped down from his position as co-representative of the group,” pointing out, “Saying that he ‘has no intention to direct’ without taking any action is merely a stopgap measure to get through the confirmation hearing.”
He urged, “Nominee Kim must clearly explain to the public whether his judgment in advocating for the withdrawal of indictments was wrong,” adding, “If he cannot take responsibility for his past claims or prove his political neutrality, it is only right that he voluntarily resign from his candidacy.” Furthermore, he added, “The People Power Party will thoroughly scrutinize the activities regarding the withdrawal of indictments and the conflict of interest issues through the confirmation hearing.”
Chief Floor Spokesperson Kim Tae-gyu (Criticism of the Democratic Party and Investigation into Auditors Manipulating Statistics under the Moon Jae-in Administration)
Chief Floor Spokesperson Kim Tae-gyu strongly criticized the current situation in which auditors from the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), who uncovered the Moon Jae-in administration's manipulation of housing price statistics, are being unfairly investigated. He also condemned the Democratic Party for distorting the investigation into the truth. Kim pointed out, “Nine auditors from the BAI are being unfairly investigated because of the Democratic Party,” adding, “All they did was uncover the fact that the Moon Jae-in administration manipulated housing price statistics, yet the BAI, which should have rewarded them, instead filed charges against them.”
Chief Floor Spokesperson Kim criticized, “The people who should be under investigation are the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport officials and Blue House administrators who instructed the Korea Real Estate Institute, which compiles the statistics, to lower the figures.” He continued, “While actual transaction prices rose by 99%, the government’s announced increase was merely 19%; yet the henchmen of power who deceived the public are living comfortably without any consequences.”
He continued by claiming, “During the parliamentary investigation last April, the Democratic Party did not hold accountable the officials who demanded statistical manipulation, but instead cornered the Board of Audit and Inspection by relying solely on the words of those ‘criminals’ who claimed the audit was coercive.” He further asserted, “The Board of Audit and Inspection formed a task force following the investigation and filed charges against the auditors four months later.” He then pointed out, “The Democratic Party protected those who manipulated housing prices and turned those who uncovered the manipulation into criminals,” adding, “The Democratic Party should be ashamed of itself for calling this a ‘truth-finding’ investigation.”
Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul (Dismissal of National Unity Committee Chairman Lee Seok-yeon and Criticism of Lee Jae-myung’s Style of National Unity)
Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul pointed out the circumstances in which National Unity Committee Chairman Lee Seok-yeon, who offered frank advice to President Lee Jae-myung, was dismissed while disregarding committee regulations, and strongly criticized the administration’s style of rejecting harsh criticism. Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul pointed out, “Lee Seok-yon, Chairman of the National Unity Committee, who had frankly advised President Lee Jae-myung to leave the Democratic Party and become a president for all, has stepped down just one year after taking office.” He noted, “Although the National Unity Committee changed the term of committee members from one year to two years last December and included an addendum to apply this to members appointed before the amendment, their terms were rendered null and void by a single remark from the President.”
Spokesperson Cho criticized, “Chairman Lee has unhesitatingly offered frank advice regarding actions running counter to national unity, such as the abolition of the prosecution’s supplementary investigation powers, the crime of distorting the law, and the issue of the insurrection court.” He added, “To President Lee, Chairman Lee was not a chairman who offered bitter criticism that served as medicine, but was simply driven out because he fell out of favor.” He further pointed out, “Ruling party figures have made remarks to the effect that the judgment of the people is more important, even though presidential consecutive terms are impossible under the current constitution.” He noted, “While there are growing calls for a public declaration regarding concerns over a constitutional amendment for consecutive terms, the President continues to feign ignorance.” He added, “Forcing out Chairman Lee while ignoring the supplementary provisions stipulated in the law raises suspicions that there is an attempt to nullify even the constitutional supplementary provisions.” He urged, “President Lee must immediately abandon the idea of forsaking national unity and looking only in one direction, listen to bitter criticism, and uphold the law and principles.”
Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul (Urging the Withdrawal of the Nomination of Yong Hye-in as Minister of Gender Equality and Family)
Finally, Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul pointed out the failure of the personnel vetting process for Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, who is embroiled in controversy regarding her qualifications and morality, and demanded that President Lee Jae-myung immediately withdraw the nomination.
Spokesperson Cho stated, “The public judgment on nominee Yong Hye-in is already complete, and the majority believes she is unqualified to serve as both a minister and a member of the National Assembly.” He pointed out, “The personnel vetting for this cabinet reshuffle was so ineffective that an aide could have verified the issues regarding her qualifications and morality simply by opening an internet window and clicking a few times during the preliminary screening stage.”
Spokesperson Cho criticized, “Candidate Yong has been accused of using public facilities by abusing his position as a National Assembly member and has even faced legal complaints from civic groups due to allegations of illegal activities related to political funding.” He added, “Furthermore, given the media reports sparking controversy over his views on the nation, it is deplorable that South Korea has become a country that recommends such a figure as a candidate for Minister of Gender Equality and Family.”
He continued, “Even though the situation has reached an unmanageable state, President Lee remains unyielding,” raising his voice and stating, “I cannot understand what on earth he is afraid of that he is holding out and unable to even withdraw the nomination.” He urged President Lee to make a decision, warning, “Unless President Lee himself engages in a thorough self-reflection regarding this cabinet reshuffle, public trust will vanish, and his approval rating will inevitably plummet.” hang5247@hanmail.net
