Attended the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Education Hope Forum 2026’ and delivered a congratulatory speech… Emphasized the “Establishment of a Student-Centered, Region-Linked Educational Ecosystem” Educational Community Gathered at the Gwangju Institute for Civic Governance… Announcement of Survey Results on Tasks and Policies for Realizing the K-Education Special City

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = In line with the launch of the nation’s first integrated special city, a massive educational autonomy model that breaks down city and provincial boundaries is being fully operational in the education sector.

Choi Jeong-hoon, Chairman of the Education Committee of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council, attended the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Education Hope Forum 2026’ held at the main auditorium of the Gwangju Institute for Civic Governance on the 28th. In his congratulatory speech, he expressed his determination to establish a leading educational model through the concerted efforts of students, faculty, parents, and the local community. This forum was organized by the Education Policy Research Institute of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education and was held under the theme, "Vision Becomes Reality – How to Realize the Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education." Approximately 300 stakeholders from the educational community, including Office of Education officials, education experts, teachers, and parents, attended the event, demonstrating intense interest in the launch of super-regional educational autonomy.

In his congratulatory remarks, Chairman Choi Jeong-hun declared, "Today, we are together welcoming a new milestone in the history of Korean education." He emphasized, "Coinciding with the launch of the 5th popular election, as the nation's first Office of Education integrated to the core, we will present an exemplary model for metropolitan educational autonomy where the region, schools, students, and parents all grow together in a virtuous cycle."

Chairperson Choi continued by emphasizing, “This Hope Forum goes beyond a mere policy sharing session; it is a grand arena for discourse where we collectively design the public future.” He further stressed, “The valuable suggestions gathered here and the outcomes of the discussions must not remain mere discourse but must be realized as practical policies that are alive and breathing in tomorrow’s school sites.”

In particular, Chairperson Choi pointed out that the intricate web of communication and cooperation among the educational community is the key to determining the success or failure of integrated education. He stated, “A democratic process where teachers, students, parents, and the local community all put their heads together to seek the direction of learning is the true starting point of an integrated education office.” He presented three major goals: ▲ policy design that prioritizes students’ learning and dignity, ▲ agile educational administration that immediately reflects the voices of the school field, and ▲ the creation of an educational ecosystem that coexists in conjunction with local industries and culture.

Furthermore, Chairperson Choi pledged to establish a strong legislative and financial support system at the parliamentary level. He began by stating, “Education is our future, and driving that future is the shared responsibility of all citizens of the city and province.” He then pledged, “The Education Committee of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Council will not only strengthen field-oriented communication to ensure integrated education takes root in schools early on, but will also faithfully fulfill its role as an institutional and financial bulwark to ensure that all students can enjoy the highest level of educational services without discrimination based on region or economic conditions.”

In the main section of the event, the presentation of the Integrated Special City Office of Education’s mid-to-long-term vision and specific implementation tasks for realizing the “K-Education Special City” drew significant attention. In particular, the results of the “Survey on Educational Community Perception and Policy Priorities,” conducted just before the launch, were revealed. This data confirmed the high aspirations of the field regarding bridging the educational gap between urban and rural areas, sharing super-regional educational infrastructure, and supporting customized future education.

In the subsequent designated discussion, education experts, parent representatives, and civic group officials participated as panelists, engaging in heated debates and offering suggestions regarding the specific administrative integration roadmap and field-oriented tasks following the launch of the Integrated Office of Education. The participants unanimously agreed on the urgent need to operate specialized educational programs that leverage local characteristics and to efficiently reallocate administrative infrastructure.

This forum is expected to serve as a significant starting point, as it clearly presents a roadmap for the future of the education sector amidst the great transformation of integration among metropolitan and provincial governments, and lays the groundwork for communication within the entire local community.
