[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 세계적인 배우 양자경이 제31회 부산국제영화제 ‘2026 올해의 아시아영화인상’ 수상자로 선정됐다.
아시아 영화산업과 문화 발전에 기여한 영화인에게 수여되는 상으로, 양자경은 아시아를 대표하는 배우로서 세계 영화계에서 쌓아온 업적을 인정받아 수상의 영예를 안게 됐다. 시상식은 오는 10월 6일 영화의전당에서 열리는 제31회 부산국제영화제 개막식에서 진행된다.
‘올해의 아시아영화인상’은 2003년 제8회 부산국제영화제에서 시작된 상이다. 아시아 영화산업과 문화 발전에 크게 기여한 아시아 영화인에게 매년 수여되며, 지난해에는 자파르 파나히, 2024년에는 구로사와 기요시, 2023년에는 주윤발, 2022년에는 양조위가 수상했다.
1962년 말레이시아에서 태어난 양자경은 1985년 영화 ‘예스마담: 황가사저’를 통해 본격적인 연기 활동을 시작했다. 이후 ‘폴리스 스토리 3: 초급경찰’(1992), ‘영춘권’(1994) 등을 통해 홍콩 영화의 전성기를 이끈 대표 배우로 자리매김했다.
1997년 ‘007 네버 다이’를 통해 국제적인 인지도를 넓힌 양자경은 2000년 ‘와호장룡’으로 세계적인 배우로 도약했다. 이후 ‘크레이지 리치 아시안’(2018), ‘샹치와 텐 링즈의 전설’(2021), ‘위키드’(2024) 등 다양한 작품에서 활약하며 아시아와 할리우드를 잇는 배우로 입지를 굳혔다.
특히 ‘에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스’(2022)에서 주연을 맡아 아시아계 배우 최초로 아카데미 여우주연상을 수상하며 세계 영화사에 새로운 기록을 남겼다. 이 작품으로 미국배우조합상(SAG), 골든글로브 등 주요 시상식에서도 여우주연상을 받으며 연기력을 다시 한번 인정받았다.
양자경은 액션과 드라마, 판타지, SF 등 장르를 넘나드는 연기와 뛰어난 신체 연기를 바탕으로 독자적인 영역을 구축해왔다. 홍콩 영화에서 시작해 할리우드와 세계 영화계로 활동 무대를 확장하면서 아시아 배우에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓혔다는 평가를 받고 있다.
2026년에는 베를린국제영화제에서 아시아 여성 최초로 명예 황금곰상을 수상하며 영화계에서 이룬 공로를 다시 한번 인정받았다. 최근에도 ‘베니스 유령 살인사건’(2023), ‘위키드’(2024), ‘스타트렉: 섹션 31’(2025) 등 영화와 시리즈를 오가며 활동을 이어가고 있다.
부산국제영화제와의 인연도 깊다. 양자경은 2002년 부산프로모션플랜(PPP)을 방문하면서 부산국제영화제와 처음 인연을 맺었다. 이후 ‘북극’(2007), ‘검우강호’(2010), ‘더 레이디’(2011), 제23회 부산국제영화제 폐막작 ‘엽문 외전’(2018), ‘에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스’(2022) 등 주요 작품을 통해 부산과 만남을 이어왔다.
이번 부산 방문은 2011년 ‘더 레이디’로 부산국제영화제 레드카펫을 밟은 이후 15년 만이다. 부산국제영화제는 올해 양자경의 수상을 기념해 특별기획 프로그램도 마련한다. 양자경이 직접 선정한 ‘검우강호’, ‘에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스’, ‘산디와라’(2026) 등 대표작 3편과 신작 ‘우리 할머니는 큐브왕’(2026)까지 모두 4편을 상영한다. 이를 통해 홍콩 영화의 전성기부터 할리우드 진출, 아카데미 수상에 이르기까지 양자경이 걸어온 연기 인생과 작품 세계를 조명할 예정이다.
제31회 부산국제영화제는 오는 10월 6일부터 15일까지 영화의전당을 비롯한 부산시 일대에서 열린다. 제21회 아시아콘텐츠&필름마켓은 10월 10일부터 13일까지 개최된다.

The award is presented to a filmmaker who has made significant contributions to the development of the Asian film industry and culture. Yeoh was honored in recognition of her lifelong achievements in global cinema as a leading Asian actor. The award ceremony will take place during the opening ceremony of the 31st Busan International Film Festival at the Busan Cinema Center on October 6.
Established in 2003 at the 8th BIFF, the "Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award" is granted annually to an Asian filmmaker who has made major contributions to the growth of the region's film industry and culture. Last year's recipient was Jafar Panahi, following Kiyoshi Kurosawa in 2024, Chow Yun-fat in 2023, and Tony Leung Chiu-wai in 2022.
Born in Malaysia in 1962, Yeoh officially began her acting career with the 1985 film Yes, Madam!. She subsequently established herself as a leading figure during the golden age of Hong Kong cinema through hit films such as Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) and Wing Chun (1994).
Yeoh gained international recognition through Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and achieved global stardom with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). She solidified her position as a vital bridge between Asia and Hollywood by starring in prominent projects including Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and Wicked (2024).
Notably, her lead role in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) made history when she became the first Asian actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her performance in the film also earned top honors at major award ceremonies, including the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.
Yeoh has carved out a unique space through her impressive physical performances and versatile acting across action, drama, fantasy, and sci-fi. Starting in Hong Kong cinema and expanding her stage to Hollywood and the global film community, she is recognized for broadening the horizons of representation for Asian actors.
In 2026, she became the first Asian woman to receive the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, marking another major milestone in her career. She continues to remain highly active across both film and series, with recent works including A Haunting in Venice (2023), Wicked (2024), and Star Trek: Section 31 (2025).
She also shares a long-standing history with BIFF. Her relationship with the festival began in 2002 when she visited the Busan Promotion Plan (PPP). Since then, she has maintained ties with Busan through major works such as Far North (2007), Reign of Assassins (2010), The Lady (2011), the 23rd BIFF closing film Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
Her upcoming visit to Busan marks her return to the festival's red carpet after 15 years, following her appearance for The Lady in 2011.
To commemorate her award, BIFF is organizing a special retrospective program this year. The festival will screen four films in total: three signature works selected by Yeoh herself—Reign of Assassins, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Sandiwara (2026)—alongside her new film My Grandmother Is a Cube King (2026).
The special lineup aims to spotlight Yeoh’s journey and cinematic universe, tracing her career from the peak of Hong Kong cinema to her successful crossover into Hollywood and her historic Oscar win.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 6 to 15 at venues across Busan, centered around the Busan Cinema Center. The 21st Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) will be held alongside the festival from October 10 to 13.
