브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 최근 압수수색과 과거 외국인 심판 등에 대한 성접대 의혹 등 각종 논란에 휩싸인 대한축구협회가 축구팬과 관계자들에게 공식 사과했다.
대한축구협회는 8일 오전 '축구팬 및 축구 관계자 여러분께 드리는 글'이라는 제목의 입장문을 내고 "각종 잡음으로 큰 실망과 걱정을 안겨드린 점 매우 죄송스럽게 생각한다"고 밝혔다.
협회는 최근 2026 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 북중미 월드컵 조별리그 탈락과 관련해 국회 문화체육관광위원회 청문회에서 질타를 받은 데 이어, 홍명보 전 축구대표팀 감독 선임 과정의 공정성 논란과 관련해 압수수색을 받았다.
또 2011년 3월부터 2012년 3월까지 국내에서 열린 월드컵·올림픽 예선 3경기와 평가전 4경기 등 총 7경기 과정에서 외국인 심판과 감독관 등 10여 명에게 성접대를 위해 수십만원에서 100만원이 넘는 금액을 결제한 사실이 알려지면서 논란이 확산했다.
협회는 이에 대해 "골을 향한 치열한 노력과 열정, 그 과정에서 피어나는 정정당당한 스포츠맨십을 통해 축구팬 여러분께 기쁨과 환희를 안겨드려야 할 축구협회가 최근 본연의 기능을 잃고 말 그대로 참담한 상황에 놓였다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "국회 청문회에 이어 사상 초유의 압수수색과 다수의 내부 구성원들조차 제대로 몰랐던 십수 년 전 일에 대한 보도에 이르기까지 협회와 관련된 각종 사안으로 심려를 끼친 점 깊이 사과드린다"고 덧붙였다.
다만 과거 논란과 현재의 협회 운영은 구분해야 한다고 강조했다.
협회는 "현재 이와 같은 부적절한 행위나 카드 사용은 절대 발생하고 있지 않다는 점을 분명히 밝힌다"며 "그동안 태극마크를 달고 한국 축구를 대표해 온 국가대표 선수들이 거둔 성과와 노력이 이번 일로 인해 오해받거나 그 의미가 퇴색되지 않기를 간절히 바란다"고 밝혔다.
협회는 쇄신과 조직문화 개선도 약속했다.
협회는 "전방위적인 외부의 비난과 질타를 전 구성원 모두 가슴 깊이 새기고 철저한 쇄신의 기회로 삼겠다"며 "더 나은 한국 축구의 미래를 위해 깊은 자아성찰과 더불어 강도 높은 노력을 이어 나가겠다"고 했다.
이어 "높아진 외부의 기준과 눈높이에 맞춰 조직문화의 투명성과 도덕성도 더욱 제고하겠다"고 밝혔다.
아울러 향후 주요 일정과 정책 과제도 차질 없이 추진하겠다는 입장이다. 협회는 "곧 다가올 아시안게임과 하반기 A매치 및 아시안컵 준비를 포함해 회장 선거인단 확대와 같은 정책적 과제들도 조속히 이행해 나갈 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다.
협회는 마지막으로 "한국 축구를 사랑하고 응원해 온 모든 축구팬과 전 세계 축구계 관계자 여러분께 깊은 실망과 놀라움을 안겨드린 점에 대해 사과드린다"며 "앞으로 축구가 가진 본연의 가치로 여러분께 분노가 아닌 환호를, 야유와 비난이 아닌 응원과 칭찬을 받을 수 있는 조직으로 거듭나기 위해 멈추지 않고 노력하겠다"고 밝혔다.
