Jeonnam Institute of Health and Environment to Conduct Water Quality Inspections at 75 Water Treatment Plants During Summer… All-out Effort to Supply Safe Tap Water

Thorough Inspection of the Entire Supply Process from Raw Water Sources to Taps - Intensive Monitoring of Odor-Causing Substances such as Geosmin and 2-MIB in Preparation for Summer Algal Blooms

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Institute of Health and Environment, under the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, will conduct special water quality verification inspections on 75 water treatment plants in cities and counties within its jurisdiction until this coming October. This initiative aims to proactively respond to climate change, such as summer heavy rains, droughts, and rising water temperatures, and to supply safe tap water to citizens.

The inspection will be conducted by directly collecting samples from each stage of the tap water supply system—from raw water sources to purified water and even to aging taps—to meticulously verify compliance with drinking water quality standards.

The Institute plans to conduct immediate on-site investigations and cause analyses for facilities that exceed water quality standards, present customized improvement plans, and re-establish safety through re-inspections. In particular, the focus is on preventing "off-flavor" phenomena—where tap water emits strange tastes or odors—in preparation for the occurrence of algal blooms caused by rising summer temperatures. To this end, plans are underway to activate a preemptive monitoring system by additionally analyzing the odor-causing substances "geosmin" and "2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB)," which are drinking water quality monitoring parameters.

During last year's inspections, some water treatment plants exceeded standards for manganese, turbidity, and total trihalomethanes (THMs). However, following facility improvements and strengthened operational management measures supported by the institute's technical assistance, all plants received a "suitable" rating in re-inspections, thereby proving their safety.

An Yang-jun, Director of the Jeonnam Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "Summer is the period when water quality management becomes most vulnerable due to heavy rainfall and rising water temperatures." He added, "We will do our utmost to supply clean tap water that all citizens can drink with peace of mind by thoroughly inspecting the entire supply process from the water treatment plant to the tap in homes and strengthening the monitoring of odor-causing substances."
