요즘 '레버리지'가 화두다. 레버리지(leverage)란 지렛대를 말한다. 즉, 작은 힘으로 큰 효과를 내는 장치인 것이다. 정치에도 '레버리지'가 있다. 누군가의 정치적 목적을 위해 반복적으로 활용되는 경우다. 안철수 의원을 보면 '레버리지'라는 단어가 떠오른다.
정치적 호불호에 따라 안철수 의원을 비난하는 것에 반대한다. 안철수 의원은 미국에서 태어났다면 대통령이 되고도 남았을 것이다. 서울 의대 출신 의사에 ,'안랩'을 운영하는 컴퓨터 과학자에, 와튼 스쿨에서 경영학을 공부한 경영인이기 때문이다. 트럼프 동문이다. 이렇게 화려한 이력의 소유자가 있었을까? 재산도 많이 기부한 것으로 알려져 있다. 한국에 이런 정치인이 있었을까?

그는 미국 대통령은 될지언정 한국 대통령은 되지 못한다. 왜일까? 능력으로 보나 이력으로 보나 안철수 같은 지도자가 '사회적 최적'일 수 있다. 하지만 한국 같은 나라에선 누군가 지도자가 된다는 건 반드시 '사회적 최적'이 아니라 내쉬 경쟁의 결과이다. 즉, 내쉬 균형은 반드시 사회적 최적이 아닌 것이다.
몰라서 그렇지 한국에서 유능한 정치인 청렴한 정치인 공적 마인드가 투철한 정치인 등 훌륭한 이들이 많이 있었을 것이다. '역 선택' 현상으로 모두 정치 시장에서 싹이 잘려나갔을 뿐이다.
안철수 의원은 축출되지 않고 이용된다. 특이한 경우다. 정치적 상품 가치가 남아있기 때문이다. 안철수 의원은 한국 정치의 레버지리다. 2011년에는 박원순 서울시장, 2012년 대선에서는 문재인 후보와의 단일화, 2022년에는 윤석열 대통령을 위한 레버리지가 됐다. 하지만 그는 이용만 당하고 버려졌다. 난 개인적으로 윤석열 대통령이 안철수 의원을 중용했어야 한다고 생각한다.
순둥이 같던 안철수 의원이 요즘 한동훈과 친한계(친 한동훈 계)를 향해 격한 말을 쏟아내고 있다. 소신일 수도 있고 주관일 수도 있고 자기 정치를 방법일 수도 있다. 그런데 강한 톤을 내뱉는 안철수 의원의 모습이 어딘가 모르게 부자연 스러워 보인다.
생각해볼 게 있다. 그렇게 해서 과연 누가 가장 큰 정치적 이익을 챙길까? 자기 정치를 해야알 마당에 누군가의 정략 속에서 또 하나의 '레버리지' 역할을 하고 있는 것은 아닐까. 자신이 레버리지 역할을 하고 있음을 모르는 경우도 많다.
안철수 의원의 정치적 상품성은 독자 노선을 추구할 때다. 그렇다면 지금 그에게 필요한 것 소신과 주관 그리고 무엇보다 독자적 판단이다. 특정 계파의 이해관계나 일시적인 당권 경쟁의 프레임 속으로 들어가는 순간, 또다시 자기 정치와 멀어지고 남의 정치를 위해 '레버리지'가 되는 결과로 이어질 수 있다.

한국 정치는 이미 여러 차례 '안철수 레버리지'를 경험했다. 문제는 레버리지는 힘을 증폭시키지만, 그 힘의 방향은 레버리지를 사용하는 사람이 결정한다는 점이다. 이제 안철수 의원은 스스로에게 질문해야 한다. 나는 판을 움직이는 플레이어인가, 아니면 누군가가 필요할 때마다 꺼내 드는 정치적 지렛대인가.
안철수 의원에 대한 맹목적 비난은 자제될 필요가 있겠다. 안철수 의원이 나쁜 게 아니라 안철수 의원을 레버리지로 쓰려는 사람들이 나쁘다. 레버리지로 쓰여 지는 안철수 의원을 볼 때 개인적으로 안타깝고 안쓰러운 마음이 든다. yslee1992@hotmail.com

I oppose criticizing Assemblyman Ahn Cheol-soo based on political likes and dislikes. If Assemblyman Ahn had been born in the United States, he would have easily become president. This is because he is a doctor from Seoul National University College of Medicine, a computer scientist running "AhnLab," and a business executive who studied management at the Wharton School. He is a Trump alumnus. Has there ever been anyone with such a brilliant resume? He is also known to have donated a significant amount of his wealth. Has there ever been a politician like this in Korea?
He may become the President of the United States, but he cannot become the President of Korea. Why is that? Judging by ability and background, a leader like Ahn Cheol-soo could be considered the "social optimal." Now, Assemblyman Ahn Cheol-soo must ask himself: Am I a player who moves the board, or am I a political lever that someone pulls out whenever needed?
