June 3rd Jamsil Revolution... Let's Find Socrates!
- Ha Bong-gyu, Professor Emeritus (Heritage Korea)
Ten years ago, as the very foundations of the nation were shaken by Moon Jae-in's pro-North (people's) tyranny, the legendary singer Na Hoon-a sang, "Brother (Socrates), why is the world like this?" At the moment of the nation's rise and fall, he brought shame to the so-called social elite—politicians, professors, journalists, and legal professionals. Now, there is a need to seriously reflect on Socrates once again at Olympic Park.
Socrates is the progenitor of Western philosophy and the figure who raised Plato, humanity's greatest philosopher, as his disciple; however, he is also a figure who voluntarily became a sacrificial victim to death in a scapegoat ritual staged by the snobbish masses under the pretext of following orthodox teachings.
Socrates left no written records whatsoever. We can only learn about the circumstances of that time from the books written by his disciple, Plato. He was born to a sculptor father and a midwife mother; he initially worked as a sculptor before becoming a Sophist, but he went so far as to violate the rules of their guild. In other words, he was more engrossed in elucidating the moral foundations of politics than in making money through rhetoric.
Ultimately, he is also famous for neglecting his family's livelihood and frequently arguing loudly with his wife, Xanthippe. The story of Socrates' shrewish wife led to a trend of celibacy not only among his disciples but also among numerous Enlightenment thinkers (moral philosophers) such as Hobbes, Locke, and Malthus 2,000 years later.
Socrates shifted the subject of philosophical study from nature to humans and society. In this context, he utilized the Sophists' trickery as a means of discovering the truth. His originality led him to make a confident opponent, known for the saying "Know thyself," realize that certainty is synonymous with ignorance.
The reason we must seek Socrates at Olympic Park is that the Olympics originated not only in the Greek polis but also serve as a representative example of intellect being sacrificed to the primal dangers of democracy—namely, fanatical tyranny of the masses.
History reveals that, just as many great figures of later generations suffered similar fates, he was accused of "corrupting the youth and inciting them to defy ancient customs." Although he defended himself in court, he was found guilty; furthermore, at the stage where the sentence was to be proposed, he provoked the judges by demanding compensation, ultimately resulting in a death sentence. However, the custom at the time was for those found guilty to leave the polis and flee abroad. Yet, he refused his disciples' offer of salvation. Later, when his disciple Plato stood trial, he also chose immediate exile.
The era of philosophy, spanning Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, was, in a sense, also an era in which the rise and fall of the Greek state were compressed. After the death of Pericles, the father of democracy, Greece collapsed into chaos and licentiousness. This clearly demonstrates the dangers of mob rule (mob rule) resulting from a lack of leadership.
Above all, Korea's democratization (the '87 system) can be described as a typical mob rule. Furthermore, electoral fraud stands at its apex. This is because national leadership has vanished, useless knowledge is rampant, and anti-state forces are running rampant; ultimately, not only justice, morality, and fine customs but even the future itself has disappeared. Now, Olympic Park must become a historic site where anti-intellectualism is eradicated and freedom, intellect, morality, and patriotism are reclaimed.
