National Pension Service's Domestic Stock Holdings of 'Over 5%' Surpass 462 Trillion Won... Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Take Over Half.
It has been revealed that the valuation of shares held by the National Pension Service (NPS) in listed companies, in which it holds a stake of 5% or more in the domestic stock market, has exceeded 460 trillion won.
As the stock market surged, driven primarily by large-cap semiconductor stocks, the value of these stakes grew 3.6-fold in just one and a half years.
Consequently, despite the NPS recently raising its target weighting for domestic stocks, its actual holdings significantly surpass the target, drawing attention to whether a full-scale asset reallocation (rebalancing) adjustment will take place in the future.
According to Leaders Index on the 14th, an analysis of the NPS's disclosures regarding large stock holdings for the second quarter of 2026 revealed that the NPS holds a stake of 5% or more in a total of 267 listed companies. The valuation of these stakes reached 462.1403 trillion won based on the closing prices on the 10th of this month. This figure represents a staggering 257.8% surge compared to 129.161 trillion won in December 2024, when the stock market hit a low point due to the aftermath of the state of emergency. During this period, while the number of companies held increased by only eight from 259, the valuation grew 3.6-fold thanks to rising stock prices.
In particular, if the approximately 900 stocks with a stake of less than 5%, which were excluded from this survey, are included, the total valuation of the National Pension Service's domestic stocks increases even further.
The valuation of stocks held with a stake of 5% or more alone accounts for 27.7% of the National Pension Service's total managed assets of 1,670.7 trillion won.
Although the National Pension Service significantly raised its target weight for domestic stocks from the existing 14.9% to 20.8%, it is already exceeding the target by at least 6.9 percentage points based on simple calculations.
By sector, the dominance of the IT and electrical/electronics sectors, including semiconductors, was notable. The number of IT and electrical/electronic companies in which the National Pension Service holds a stake of 5% or more increased from 33 at the end of 2024 to 35 in July of this year, and the valuation of these stakes surged by 632.1% from 39.1063 trillion won to 286.3016 trillion won. Consequently, the proportion of this sector in the National Pension Service's total portfolio more than doubled, soaring from 30.3% to 62.0%.
This upward trend was driven by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Samsung Electronics' stake rose from 7.3% to 7.9%, and its equity value skyrocketed by 468.8%, from 23.0572 trillion won to 131.1387 trillion won.
SK Hynix also saw its stake increase from 7.6% to 8.1%, and its equity value surged by 1,210.1%, from 9.5583 trillion won to 125.2187 trillion won. The combined equity value of the two companies amounts to approximately 256 trillion won, accounting for 55.5% of the National Pension Service's total assets held at a stake of 5% or more.
Among small and medium-sized stocks, the shareholding ratios of Korea Circuit and Tess surged significantly, while Intech Plus and Simtek newly joined the list of companies holding a stake of 5% or more.
The holding company sector (11.4%), which ranks second in investment weight, and the shipbuilding, defense, and machinery sector (5.4%), which ranks third, also saw an expansion in the value of companies holding a stake of 5% or more.
The equity value of the holding company sector increased by 203.2%, rising from 17.4001 trillion won to 52.7576 trillion won. In particular, SK Square saw its equity valuation skyrocket by 1,941.7%, from 772.6 billion won to 15.7734 trillion won, driven by a rise in its shareholding ratio from 7.2% to 8.5% coupled with a sharp increase in its stock price. Shareholdings by OCI Holdings, SK Discovery, and Dongwon Industries also increased.
The shipbuilding, defense, and machinery sectors also recorded a 161.1% increase in equity value, reaching 24.7289 trillion won. The expansion of stakes in small and medium-sized stocks, such as Jinsung T.EC and Hankook Carbon, was notable, while among large-cap stocks, the shareholdings of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Doosan Energy, and Hanwha Aerospace rose.
Conversely, shareholdings of Hyundai Rotem, Hanwha Systems, and Samsung Heavy Industries decreased slightly.
In the food and beverage, telecommunications, and pharmaceutical/bio sectors, which are characterized by strong domestic demand and traditional defensive stock characteristics, a trend of reducing shareholdings was evident. In the food and beverage sector, the number of companies holding more than 5% remained at 10, but seven companies saw their shareholdings decline.
Nongshim experienced the largest drop, while CJ CheilJedang and Daesang also saw their stakes decrease. However, the shareholding ratios of Samyang Foods, which led the success of Buldak Spicy Ramen, as well as KT&G and Binggrae, increased.
In the telecommunications sector, the shareholding ratios of the three major carriers—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—declined across the board. Although the valuation itself increased due to rising stock prices, their share of total investment plummeted from 1.7% to 0.6%.
In the pharmaceutical and biotech sector, the number of companies holding a stake of 5% or more dropped from 17 to 14, causing the sector's total equity value to decrease by 3.3%. Consequently, the investment weight was drastically reduced from 7.8% to 2.1%. This result was achieved through the sale of shares centered on traditional pharmaceutical companies such as GC Pharma, Chong Kun Dang, and Daewoong Pharmaceutical.
