홍명보는 “국가대표팀 감독이라는 막중한 책임을 맡았음에도 월드컵에서 국민 여러분께서 기대했던 결과를 만들어드리지 못했다. 그 결과에 대한 모든 책임은 감독인 저에게 있다”며 “기대와 응원에 보답하지 못했고, 많은 분들께 실망과 상처를 드렸다. 감독으로서 그 책임을 무겁게 받아들이며 다시 한번 깊이 사과드린다”며 고개를 숙였다.

그러면서 홍명보는 “하지만 시간이 흐르면서 사실과 다른 내용들이 사실인 양 알려지고, 확인되지 않은 이야기들까지 더해졌다. 무엇보다 그 과정에서 함께 대표팀을 위해 헌신했던 선수들과 스태프들까지 오해와 추측 속에 놓이는 모습을 보며, 침묵만 하는 것이 과연 옳은 일인지 다시 돌아보게 됐다”고 말했다.
홍명보는 월드컵을 마치고 귀국 이틀 만에 미국으로 출국한 것 관련 “미국에 머물게 된 것 역시 결과를 외면하거나 피하기 위한 선택은 아니었다. 당시 저와 가족을 향한 협박과 신변 안전에 대한 우려가 있었고, 한 가정의 가장으로서 가족을 지켜야 했기 때문”이라며 “그 어떤 이유로도 감독으로서 해야 할 일을 외면하거나 국민 여러분을 피하려 했던 것은 결코 아니었다”고 전했다.
홍명보는 청문회 관련 “청문회가 열린다면 그 자리는 월드컵 결과에 대해 국민 여러분께 설명드리는 자리라고 생각한다. 그렇다면 그 자리에 서야 할 사람도 감독인 저”라며 “결과에 대한 책임은 오롯이 감독인 저에게 있다. 그렇기에 청문회가 열린다면 감독으로서 제가 감당해야 할 책임 역시 저 혼자 끝까지 감당하겠다. 국민 여러분 앞에서 제가 알고 있는 사실은 있는 그대로 말씀드리며, 어떠한 질문도 피하지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.
