Korean Plastic Surgery and Transgender Medicine Enjoying Great Popularity in Southeast Asia
Columnist Jung Gil-sun
In Southeast Asia, Korean medical care boasts the best, surpassing even Western medical care. In particular, reports indicate that Korean plastic surgery procedures in Thailand and Cambodia significantly outperform those of Japan or the West. In Thailand, it appears that more than half of adolescents desire plastic surgery. According to recent data analysis, 57.77% of Thai youth—especially women under the age of 18 approaching adulthood—want to undergo surgery, while 68.88% of female university students aged 18 to 22 are interested in cosmetic procedures. Simply put, Southeast Asia is establishing itself as a gold mine and a mecca for South Korean plastic surgery.
Thailand ranks within the top 20 countries worldwide for the highest volume of plastic surgery. This figure is the second highest among Southeast Asian countries, following Taiwan. Although Cambodia has fallen outside the top 50 rankings due to its economic situation, the fact that the Cambodian Minister of Health requested expertise in plastic surgery three years ago indicates that Korean procedures are overwhelmingly popular there as well. Furthermore, Thailand has grown into a plastic surgery market worth 700 billion won in just 10 years, driven by an increase in the number of people undergoing such procedures. Notably, among adolescents who underwent plastic surgery in Thailand, 59.25% had rhinoplasty and 46.82% had skin whitening, showing a greater interest in facial surgery than body contouring.
Life expectancy in Southeast Asia is steadily rising, and the desire to look younger is growing among the middle-aged and older generations. Previously, people lived with resignation as their faces aged due to Buddhist "fatalism." However, this Buddhist "fatalism" is changing as women's social participation increases and the number of women in white-collar professions rises. It is known that the most common surgeries and procedures performed by people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s are wrinkle-related treatments, followed by filler injections. Additionally, eye-related surgeries were more prevalent among those in their 50s than among those in their 30s and 40s. Among teenagers, eye and nose surgeries ranked first and second, respectively, with eye surgery patients showing higher numbers than those in their 30s and 40s. Most of these procedures are cosmetic, such as double eyelid surgery and eye shape correction.
As the Korean Wave has established itself as a universal cultural trend in Southeast Asia, it is reported that many teenage students are inquiring about plastic surgery because they admire the appearance of Korean idol groups. This sentiment stems from the fact that young women in Southeast Asia are enthusiastic about Korean celebrities due to the Korean Wave craze and desire to resemble them. Furthermore, they harbor ideal beauty fantasies not only regarding celebrities but also regarding many ordinary Korean women. Consequently, as look-alike surgeries become more widespread, people from Southeast Asia—including those from Thailand and China seeking overseas plastic surgery—are naturally visiting Korea. However, the reality is that the number of plastic surgery clinics is increasing exponentially in Southeast Asia as well. There is no longer a need to travel all the way to Korea for plastic surgery. That is not all.
Korean-style urological procedures are also very popular in Thailand. Thailand is a paradise for sexual minorities, where transgender and female communities coexist. In Thailand, beauty pageants for transgender people are held twice a year. One is a domestic competition, and the other is an international competition in which transgender people from around the world participate; I hear that the domestic Thai transgender beauty pageant will be held in three days. It was a great success, with about 150 transgender people participating from all over Thailand, and winners are given opportunities to work as models or entertainers. During this competition period, transgender people mainly visit urology clinics, dermatology clinics, and plastic surgery clinics in Korea. I heard that Korea University Anam Hospital and Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital have specialized transgender clinics, and these clinics are bustling with activity during the competition period.
If it is difficult for plastic surgeons or transgender specialists to make a living in Korea, expanding into Southeast Asia does not seem like a bad idea. While it might be a bit awkward for transgender specialists, it appears that plastic surgeons could rake in a considerable amount of money locally.
