‘30th Anniversary’ YG, Jinusean, Big Bang, Blackpink, Bemon... Unwavering ‘YG Music DNA’

“Black Music Genre... YG’s Musical Identity Remaining Valid”

Break News Reporter Park Dong-je = YG Entertainment has reached its 30th anniversary in 2026.

YG Entertainment began as Hyun Planning on May 20, 1996, and changed its name to MF (Major Flavor) the following year, Yanggun Planning in 1998, and finally to the current YG in 2001. YG Executive Producer Yang Hyun-suk has put his own name and nickname front and center with a sense of responsibility and pride for the content he personally produced, while continuously exploring public tastes. However, his musical direction has remained unwavering.

YG revealed its musical DNA, stating, "The Black music genres—such as hip-hop, R&B, and New Jack Swing—that permeated the entire album of the group Keep Six, launched in 1996 during the current planning era, remain the valid identity of YG's music to this day." The company added, "Although the public's reaction to Keep Six at the time was lukewarm, YG chose a straightforward approach of focusing on perfection while maintaining its unique musical style, rather than making musical compromises."

In the early days of its establishment in the 1990s, YG signaled the birth of its hip-hop mainstream through Jinusean and One Time, who were introduced following Keep Six. In particular, YG created an environment for its artists to interact with producers to ensure they did not remain merely performers and vocalists.

In 1999, the results of these efforts were unveiled under the name "YG Family." This marked the first instance of affiliated artists releasing an album as a single team under the modern K-pop agency system, and it serves as the foundation for the YG Family spirit and in-house production system that are still upheld today. Subsequently, during the first half of the 2000s, efforts were made to popularize genres based on black music, ranging from R&B to reggae. Through Wheesung, Gummy, and Big Mama, the trend of R&B vocalists was spearheaded, and in 2005, YG Underground was established as an affiliate label to introduce hip-hop artists who had been active in the underground scene to the public.

Furthermore, Se7en, a trainee who had devoted himself to preparation for a long time, caused a sensation with his 2003 debut song "Come On..." by performing on stage while riding Heelys, marking the starting point for YG's expansion into overseas markets.

Big Bang and 2NE1, who emerged in the second half of the 2000s, pioneered the K-pop hip-hop core idol market. Big Bang, who debuted in 2006, achieved explosive popularity with "Lie," living up to their name, and subsequently released a series of hits including "Last Farewell," "Haru Haru," "Fantastic Baby," and "Bang Bang Bang." Not only the team activities but also solo and unit activities were all successful.

In 2009, YG launched 2NE1, placing emphasis on differentiation from other girl groups. Based on hip-hop music, 2NE1 gained immense popularity immediately upon debut with a "girl crush" concept featuring self-directed female narratives and messages, and unconventional styling. They swept the top spots on music charts with their debut song "Fire" and followed it up with another hit, "I Don't Care," winning both the Best New Artist and Grand Prize at the MAMA Awards in their first year. With them, YG fired the starting gun for K-pop's full-scale global expansion.

In 2010, YG announced an exclusive contract with Psy, marking the company's first recruitment of an external artist. Subsequently, artists such as Epik High, Sechs Kies, Lee Hi, AKMU, Winner, and iKON joined YG, further expanding its musical spectrum.

In particular, Psy is a representative success story that demonstrated YG's marketing system and artist-tailored planning work in the global market. "Gangnam Style" set a historic record as the first K-pop artist to reach No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard "Hot 100." To this day, the music video maintains the highest record for a K-pop artist's music video with 5.9 billion views.

In the latter half of 2010, Blackpink emerged, rising beyond K-pop to become a world-class group. Upon their debut in 2016, Blackpink established themselves as the representative K-pop girl group. They are currently enjoying peak popularity, setting numerous new records such as being the first K-pop girl group to achieve double million-seller status, attracting the largest audience for a K-pop girl group world tour (1.8 million), being the first K-pop girl group to perform at Wembley Stadium in the UK, and becoming the first artists worldwide to surpass 100 million YouTube subscribers.

Blackpink also achieved remarkable success with their third mini-album, "DEADLINE," released this year. Despite being their first full-group release in 3 years and 5 months, they sold 1.46 million copies on the first day alone, breaking the all-time record for sales by a K-pop girl group, and surpassed 1.77 million copies in first-week sales, breaking their own previous record.

TREASURE, who debuted in 2020, and BABYMONSTER, who appeared in 2024, are inheriting YG DNA as next-generation groups. TREASURE is continuing the lineage of "YG performance-oriented idols" with solid live performances and free-spirited stage presence, while BABYMONSTER is proving itself to be "YG's next-generation girl group" with monstrous skills that are hard to believe for rookies.

Last year, YG announced an internal system overhaul and signaled an aggressive scouting and launch of new talent. A new elite five-member boy group is set to debut this coming September, marking the first such group in six years, while the new four-member girl group 'Next Monster (tentative name),' set to succeed Baby Monster, is also unveiling itself in turn.

YG, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, has established a new lineup of next-generation rookies. All eyes are on their future endeavors, which will unfold with YG's unique and distinctive musical DNA.
