강원 춘천시가 7월 한 달 동안 춘천 전역을 뜨겁게 달굴 역대 최대 규모의 국제태권도 대축제의 화려한 막을 올린다.

7일 춘천시에 따르면, 육동한 춘천시장(춘천레저·태권도조직위원회 위원장)은 이날 시청 브리핑룸에서 오는 8일부터 22일까지 송암스포츠타운 일원에서 ‘강원·춘천 2026 세계태권도문화축제’와 ‘2026 춘천코리아오픈국제태권도대회’를 개최한다고 공식 발표했다.

올해 대회는 지난해보다 무려 43%나 급증한 88개국 5,000여 명의 국내외 선수단이 참가해 사상 최대 규모를 자랑한다. 특히 세계태권도연맹(WT) 공인 랭킹 포인트가 부여되는 권위 있는 국제대회가 연속으로 열려 전 세계 최정상급 선수들의 불꽃 튀는 각축전이 예상된다.

이번 축제의 가장 큰 관전 포인트는 단순한 무도(武道) 경기를 넘어 AI, 문화, 관광이 한데 어우러진 ‘글로벌 종합 스포츠 축제’로 기획됐다는 점이다.
우선 14일(문화축제)과 18일(코리아오픈) 각각 열리는 환영식 및 개막식에서는 첨단 AI 기술을 접목한 미디어파사드 퍼포먼스가 밤하늘을 수놓으며 세계 태권도 수도 춘천의 화려한 이미지를 각인시킬 예정이다. 가수 김연자의 축하 공연을 비롯해 육군태권도시범단, K-POP 아이돌 공연팀이 총출동해 축제의 흥을 최고조로 끌어올린다.

특히 춘천시는 방문객들이 춘천의 명소와 상권을 쉽게 오갈 수 있도록 ‘시내관광순환 셔틀버스’를 최초로 도입한다. 셔틀버스는 삼악산 케이블카, 명동, 소양강스카이워크 등을 순환하며, 18~19일에는 명동상인회가 주관하는 풍성한 거리 이벤트와 할인 행사가 더해져 지역 경제에 막대한 활력을 불어넣을 전망이다.
한편, 춘천시는 7월 축제 이후 9월에는 세계태권도품새선수권대회와 WT 집행위원회를 잇따라 개최하며, 송암스포츠타운 일원에 건립 중인 WT 본부(2028년 준공 목표) 조성 사업에도 박차를 가할 계획이다.
