브레이크뉴스 박동제 기자= 정몽규 대한축구협회 회장이 사임서를 제출, 13년 5개월 만에 한국축구 수장직에서 물러났다.
대한축구협회는 6일 공식 보도자료를 내고 “정몽규 회장은 오늘(6일) 오전 천안 코리아풋볼파크에서 부회장 및 이사들이 참석한 가운데 마지막 임원회의를 개최한 후 사임했다”고 밝혔다. 정몽규는 지난 2013년 1월 28일 제52대 대한축구협회장에 당선된 이후 4선을 역임했다.
당초 정몽규 회장은 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’ 폐막 이후 사임할 것으로 예상됐으나, 대한축구협회를 둘러싼 논란을 수습하고 조직을 정상화시키기 위해 사퇴를 앞당긴 것으로 알려졌다.
대한축구협회는 정관 제23조에 따라 부회장 중 한 명이 대한체육회의 인준을 받아 회장 직무를 대행할 예정이며, 직무 대행을 중심으로 후임 회장 선거 과정을 차질 없이 공정하게 준비해 나갈 방침이다.
정몽규 회장은 이날 대한축구협회를 통해 “대한축구협회장이라는 중책을 맡는 동안, 대한민국 축구의 발전과 영광만을 바라보며 달렸다. 때로는 기대에 부응했고, 때로는 깊은 실망을 안겨드리기도 했다”며 “모든 영광과 성과는 선수들과 팬 여러분 덕분이며, 모든 부족함과 과오는 오롯이 저의 책임”이라고 밝혔다.
그러면서 “이제 회장직에서 물러나, 한 명의 열성적인 축구팬으로 돌아가 한국 축구를 응원하겠다. 대한민국 축구는 언제나 그랬듯, 수많은 시련을 넘어 다시 한 번 높이 비상할 것이라 확신한다”며 “그간의 과분한 성원에 진심으로 감사드린다”고 덧붙였다.
한편, 홍명보 감독이 이끌었던 한국 축구 국가대표팀은 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’ A조 조별리그에서 1승 2패(승점 3점·골득실 -1)로 조 3위를 기록, 32강 토너먼트 진출에 실패했다.
참가국이 48개국으로 확대된 ‘2026 FIFA 북중미 월드컵’에서 한국은 최종 순위 34위를 기록했다.
