구미시는 조홍조 선수가 지난 13일부터 14일까지 홍콩 쩡관오 스포츠그라운드(Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground)에서 열린 ‘2026 홍콩오픈육상경기대회’ 남자 멀리뛰기 종목에서 1위에 올랐다고 밝혔다.
이번 대회에는 약 500명의 선수가 참가했으며, 조 선수는 한국실업육상연맹의 추천을 받아 대한민국 대표 자격으로 출전했다.
조홍조 선수는 대회 내내 안정적인 경기력을 선보이며 남자 멀리뛰기 부문 정상에 올랐다. 특히 이번 대회는 세계육상연맹(World Athletics) 콘티넨털 투어 챌린저(Continental Tour Challenger) 등급으로 운영돼 국제 경쟁력을 갖춘 선수들이 대거 참가한 무대라는 점에서 의미를 더했다.
구미 출신인 조 선수는 한국체육대학교를 졸업한 뒤 2024년 구미시청 육상팀에 입단했다. 현재 멀리뛰기와 세단뛰기를 주 종목으로 활동하고 있으며, 국내외 대회에서 꾸준히 두각을 나타내고 있다.
올해 들어서도 우수한 성적을 이어가고 있다. ‘2026 밀양아리랑 전국육상대회’ 멀리뛰기 우승에 이어 ‘제55회 전국종별육상경기선수권대회’에서는 준우승을 차지했으며, 6월 기준 대한육상연맹 남자 일반부 멀리뛰기 랭킹 1위에 이름을 올리고 있다.
구미시는 이번 국제대회 우승이 선수 개인의 성과를 넘어 지역 체육의 경쟁력을 대외적으로 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
김장호 구미시장은 “국제무대에서 뛰어난 성과를 거두며 구미시의 위상을 높여준 조홍조 선수와 이상국 감독에게 축하와 감사의 뜻을 전한다”며 “앞으로도 선수들이 최고의 기량을 발휘할 수 있도록 체계적인 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다.
한편 구미시청 육상팀은 1996년 창단 이후 전국 및 국제대회에서 꾸준한 성과를 거두며 지역 체육 발전과 도시 브랜드 가치 향상에 기여하고 있다.

Gumi City announced that Cho Hong-jo took first place in the men's long jump at the ‘2026 Hong Kong Open’ held at the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground in Hong Kong from the 13th to the 14th.
Approximately 500 athletes participated in the competition, and Cho competed as a representative of South Korea upon the recommendation of the Korea Corporate Athletics Federation.
Cho Hong-jo displayed consistent performance throughout the competition to claim the top spot in the men's long jump. This victory holds particular significance as the event was operated as a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger, featuring a large number of internationally competitive athletes. Athlete Cho, a native of Gumi, joined the Gumi City Hall Athletics Team in 2024 after graduating from Korea National Sport University. Currently competing in the long jump and triple jump as his main events, he has consistently distinguished himself in domestic and international competitions.
He has continued to achieve excellent results this year. Following his victory in the long jump at the ‘2026 Miryang Arirang National Athletics Championships,’ he secured second place at the ‘55th National Athletics Championships.’ As of June, he ranks first in the men’s general division long jump rankings at the Korea Athletics Federation.
Gumi City expects that this victory at an international competition will serve as an opportunity to showcase the competitiveness of local sports to the outside world, going beyond the individual achievements of the athlete.

Meanwhile, the Gumi City Hall track and field team has been contributing to the development of local sports and the enhancement of the city's brand value by achieving consistent results in national and international competitions since its founding in 1996.
