People Power Party Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk: “NEC Must Be Disbanded and Special Prosecutor Must Be Investigated”... Warning of Regime’s Downfall
- Declares All-Out Struggle Against Ruling Party and Government Over Allegations of Local Election Mismanagement, Proposes Trilateral Meeting
- Characterizes Ministry of Justice Committee as ‘Planned to Save Lee Jae-myung’... Refusal of Special Prosecutor Is a Confession of Accomplice Status
- Party Leadership: “Focus Party’s Election Power on NEC Crisis; Stop Undermining Party Chairman”
Break News Senior Reporter Lee Je-hang / Poet
People Power Party Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk has launched an all-out struggle urging the immediate launch of a special prosecutor and nationwide re-elections, characterizing the National Election Commission’s (NEC) mismanagement of the local elections as “systematic election fraud.” While proposing the disbandment of the NEC and a meeting between the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties, Chairman Jang criticized the Ministry of Justice’s committee formation as a “planned measure to cancel Chairman Lee Jae-myung’s trial” and demanded a resolution to the government’s failures in public welfare. In response, the party leadership, including Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong, argued that the party must concentrate its efforts on the NEC crisis to counter the reckless actions of the ruling Democratic Party and others. They completely blocked calls for the party leader's resignation and lent their support to the leadership of Chairman Jang. On the other hand, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik is taking a cautious stance regarding the demand to convene a general meeting of lawmakers.
Jang Dong-hyuk: “NEC must immediately launch a special prosecutor investigation and hold nationwide re-elections”... Sharp criticism directed at Lee Jae-myung and the government
People Power Party Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk has opened the curtain on a strong struggle regarding the recently surfaced allegations of mismanagement of the election by the National Election Commission (NEC). On the 13th and 14th, Chairman Jang defined the NEC crisis as “systemic mismanagement and election fraud” through his social media and proposed a meeting with the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties to discuss the immediate launch of a special prosecutor investigation and nationwide re-elections. In addition, he launched an all-out struggle against the opposition and the government, refuting point by point the Ministry of Justice's formation of a prosecution-related committee, youth employment measures, and the message from Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung.
“A repetition of miracles, not probability... Disband the National Election Commission and accept a special prosecutor”
First, Representative Jang Dong-hyuk strongly criticized the explanations released by the National Election Commission, calling them an irresponsible attitude that runs directly against common sense. Representative Jang began by stating, “Despite 869 cases of votes for twins and 15 cases of votes for triplets being discovered nationwide, the National Election Commission’s fact-finding committee completely excluded these from the investigation.” Regarding the Commission’s repeated excuse that it is “probabilistically possible,” he retorted, “The probability of the South Korean national team winning the World Cup is about 0.35%, but if they actually win, we call it a ‘miracle.’ If such miraculous events occurred all at once, it is common sense to verify the facts rather than claim probabilistic possibilities.” Representative Jang intensified his offensive by citing specific examples regarding the National Election Commission's (NEC) destruction of evidence and negligent conduct. He remarked, "The Songpa District NEC was caught removing belongings from its temporary office even while a search and seizure was underway," and asked rhetorically, "Who would believe the NEC's explanation that they returned the items?" Furthermore, regarding the NEC's dismissal of boxes of ballot papers—which were supposedly discarded—as having "no evidentiary value" upon their eventual discovery, he delivered a sharp rebuke, stating, "The judgment on evidentiary value is made by the court, not the NEC."
Pointing out that approximately 1,700 votes were omitted and vote counts were entered incorrectly in the Gyeonggi Superintendent of Education election—following the situation in Jeonbuk—Representative Jang expressed concern, noting, "There are already 35 election appeals filed, and it is difficult to predict how many more will increase." Consequently, Representative Jang raised his voice, demanding, "We must hold nationwide re-elections and launch a special prosecutor immediately." In particular, citing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok’s call for the dissolution of the National Election Commission (NEC) and Representative Jeong Cheong-rae’s remarks agreeing to a special prosecutor, he urged, “Let’s meet today to discuss the re-election and the special prosecutor.” He stated, “The format does not matter, and even a ‘three-party meeting’ is fine.” He issued a stern warning, saying, “If they believe they can block this again with their majority seats, they are greatly mistaken. The price for ignoring the seething public sentiment and citizens’ anger at Olympic Park is only one thing: the downfall of the regime.”
Following this, Representative Jang characterized the NEC’s attitude as “four ‘nothingnesses’” and argued that dissolution is the only solution. He criticized the NEC, stating, “The NEC is the very embodiment of incompetence, irresponsibility, insensitivity, and recklessness.” He added, “They brazenly claim to have discarded important evidence, dismiss it as worthless when discovered, and dismiss incomprehensible results as mere coincidence.” He further defined, “When coincidences repeat, one must question inevitability, and intentionally neglecting negligence is itself corruption.” Citing the exceptional case of an entire class achieving perfect scores on a final exam, he asserted, “Just because it is not impossible does not mean it should be dismissed as a coincidence,” adding, “The stage where one can silence people with ‘election rigging conspiracy theories’ has long passed.” In conclusion, Representative Jang stated, “We cannot leave out any of the following: a re-election, a special prosecutor, electoral system reform, or National Election Commission reform; there will be no compromise,” and called for both the ruling and opposition parties to go all-in on the mass rally of citizens at Seoul Olympic Park.
“Committee for Canceling Lee Jae-myung’s Trial is a Confession of Accomplices... Must Stop the Lips”
Representative Jang Dong-hyuk also took a sharp stance against the ‘Future Committee for Respecting Prosecutorial Human Rights,’ launched by the Ministry of Justice, labeling it an “organization designed to save Lee Jae-myung.” Representative Jang characterized the committee, launched by Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho, as a “bizarre organization” and a “build-up for canceling Lee Jae-myung’s trial.” Pointing out the bias in the composition of the committee in detail, he criticized the members, citing Chairperson Jang Joo-young (from the Lawyers for Democratic Society), lawyer Kim Jin-soo (an official of the Moon Jae-in administration), Professor Kim Hye-kyung (who refuted the appeal in the Lee Jae-myung case), and Professor Oh Byung-doo (from the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy), stating, "If they had even a shred of conscience, they should have included at least one or two people from the opposing side." He continued to sarcastically remarked, "It is tantamount to saying to gather and just stamp a seal after already reaching a conclusion," adding, "We are even pouring in state budget funds to respect the human rights of one person, Lee Jae-myung, and guarantee his future." Furthermore, he warned, "If you try to keep Lee Jae-myung from going to prison, the day will soon come when we all go to prison hand in hand."
He also pressured the ruling party regarding the sincerity of their moves to reject the special prosecutor. Representative Jang dismissed the attitudes of Prime Minister Kim Min-suk and Representative Chung Cheong-rae as "lip service," stating, "They arbitrarily create unnecessary 'political special prosecutors,' yet they stand their ground in the face of a special prosecutor that is actually needed." He argues that the revealed suspicions alone—such as the deprivation of voting rights due to a shortage of ballots, the continuation of vote counting during exit polls, and omitted or incorrectly entered votes—are more than enough grounds for a special prosecutor. Representative Jang asserted, “We cannot leave the investigation to a Joint Investigation Headquarters that acts on orders from Lee Jae-myung and is wary of the Democratic Party,” adding, “The reason the Democratic Party and Representative Lee Jae-myung are refusing a special prosecutor is that they are accomplices with the National Election Commission and have more things they wish to hide.” He drew a line in the sand, stating that if they are truly innocent, they must entrust the investigation to a special prosecutor recommended by the People Power Party for the public to trust them, and warned, “Refusing a special prosecutor is an admission of complicity and will be the trigger for the downfall of the regime.”
Criticism of Lee Jae-myung’s actions amidst a living hell... “Must fulfill duties and listen to public sentiment”
Criticism also continued regarding the economic crisis, including youth unemployment, and Representative Lee Jae-myung’s messaging. Representative Jang diagnosed the current situation as a "real estate hell" and a "jobs hell," stating, "Last month, the number of employed youth dropped by 255,000 compared to last year, marking the largest decline since the pandemic, and the total number of employed people also decreased by 40,000." He then criticized Representative Lee Jae-myung, who has been quick to speak up on every issue, for remaining silent on the job market. At the same time, he urged the government to properly handle practical matters such as labor reform and industrial restructuring, warning, "You cannot create a single job by leaving the 'Yellow Envelope Law' intact and maintaining the vested interests of the KCTU while offering mere lip service about 'prioritizing youth employment improvement.'"
In particular, regarding Representative Lee Jae-myung's social media post about the "duties of the ruling party," Representative Jang rebuked him, asking, "Every word is correct, but has he actually kept even a single one of them?" Addressing Representative Lee, who speaks of passion for a great cause, he pointed out, "These are not the words of someone who spent an entire year destroying the judicial system just to avoid going to prison himself." He also criticized Lee for talking about infinite responsibility while only harping on about the stock market without offering any concrete solutions. Regarding the argument that the focus should be on the entire nation, Representative Jang retorted, “It seems you have forgotten the past when you branded homeowners as devils and the opposing side as the worst kind of lowlifes,” adding, “The label of an incompetent agitator who focuses on dividing people without solutions is a perfect assessment of Representative Lee himself.”
Representative Jang sarcastically remarked to Representative Lee, who is currently on an overseas trip, “You must have been quite exhausted watching the pro-Myeong and pro-Cheong factions fight until their heads explode.” He advised that if Representative Lee wants the ruling party to change, he should first fulfill his own duties and cleanly abandon his demand to “cancel the trial.” Furthermore, he emphasized that overall state affairs must be put back on the table and rectified by listening to public opinion, adding that the first step toward inclusion and openness is for Representative Lee, who has lost his sense of balance, to first listen to the voices of young people and citizens calling for immediate re-elections.
People Power Party Leadership: “Party Power Focused on NEC Crisis... No Attempts to Undermine the Party Leader”
As Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk pursues an all-out struggle, the People Power Party leadership has also moved to completely block the "party leader responsibility theory" raised by some within the party following the June 3 local elections. Chief Spokesperson Choi Bo-yoon drew an official line during a briefing at the National Assembly, stating, "Chairman Jang has never expressed any intention to resign regarding his position." Chief Spokesperson Choi clarified that, according to the party constitution and bylaws, it is not yet the stage to discuss a reorganization of the leadership structure, as no four or more Supreme Council members have resigned.
The leadership's efforts to build support base were also confirmed from various angles. Chief Spokesperson Choi explained, "We are currently focusing all party power on the NEC-related crisis. Led by Chairman Jang, many lawmakers are visiting the rally site at Olympic Park to listen to public sentiment and are preparing to propose a special prosecutor bill and a parliamentary investigation." He stated that if the party displays a shameful image due to internal division, it is failing to fulfill its role as an opposition party, and promised to gather internal disagreements to provide a response in the legitimate direction desired by the people.
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong also actively joined in lending support to the party leader. Through his social media, Secretary General Jeong expressed concern, stating, "The amplification of internal conflict stemming from attempts to undermine the party leader will push the fundamental role of the opposition party—which involves reform tasks demanded by the people and checking the ruling party—to the back burner." He emphasized that the most urgent task currently is rectifying the infringement of suffrage rights, stating, "It is our duty to respond to the growing suspicions of mismanagement by the National Election Commission and the continuing cries of the people at Seoul Olympic Park, while protecting their safety."
Furthermore, Secretary General Jeong argued that now is the time to rally the party's strength against the arrogant Democratic Party's reckless push for a special prosecutor to withdraw charges and their unilateral attempts to form standing committees. Regarding the calls for his resignation, including demands to convene a general assembly of lawmakers by the "Alternatives and Future" group to which some reformist lawmakers belong, he countered, "This is merely an attempt to destabilize the party that has continued since before the election, and recent opinion polls show that the People Power Party's approval rating has rebounded to its highest level since Chairman Jang took office." Secretary-General Jeong repeatedly urged that the party stop the predetermined offensive for his resignation and instead focus on fulfilling the "proper role of an opposition party" by confidently standing up against the excesses of the ruling party and power, in accordance with the public's command to defend democracy.
Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik, "Tongyeong's Future and Livelihoods Are Top Priorities"... "Prudent Leadership" Tested Amidst Internal Factional Conflict
"Field-Oriented Livelihood Actions"... Expanding Scope of Communication with Local Residents and Youth
People Power Party Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik temporarily set aside his non-stop schedule of central politics and the National Assembly following his election as floor leader, and went down to his constituency to engage in close communication with residents. Floor Leader Jeong attended the "12th Sanyang-eup Residents' Harmony Sports Festival" held in Sanyang-eup, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, on the weekend of the 13th. There, he met directly with local residents, exchanged warm greetings, and spent time communicating with them.
After the event, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik shared his thoughts via a social media message. Expressing deep affection for the residents, he stated, "It was a meaningful time for the residents of Sanyang-eup—where beautiful nature, generous hospitality, and a vibrant community spirit of caring for and looking after one another come together to share harmony and friendship." He also encouraged the residents, saying, "I hope that everyone present was able to relieve the fatigue accumulated from their busy daily lives, and that they created joyful memories by laughing and cheering together."
Floor Leader Jeong further emphasized that the core driving force for regional development lies in the unity of the residents. He asserted, "I believe that the warm affection and power of harmony among the residents, as they encourage one another and join forces, are the driving force that makes Sanyang-eup and Tongyeong even better places to live." He then raised his voice, stating, “I, too, will always listen to the voices of the residents and do my utmost for the development of Sanyang-eup and Tongyeong, as well as for a better life for the residents.”
His focus on public welfare activities also extended to communication with the youth generation. Following his attendance at a sports day, Floor Leader Jeong held a meaningful conversation with students from Chungmu High School, engaging in an in-depth discussion on the connection between future science and technology and regional development. The students requested a meeting with the local lawmaker on the topic of “The Current Status of AI Technology Utilization in Our Region and Future Development Potential,” and Floor Leader Jeong responded enthusiastically to the proposal from the future generation.
Regarding his meeting with the youth, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik remarked, “I believe that Tongyeong’s future is not built solely by the concerns of adults, but can open up even brighter when the interest and fresh ideas of youth are added.” He added his intention to actively incorporate the innovative ideas of local youth into legislative activities and regional policies in the future.
Calls for Jang Dong-hyuk’s Resignation Intensify Within the Party… Jeong Jeom-sik Says He Will “Think Until the Weekend” in Response to Demand for General Assembly
Unlike his efforts to communicate with the public regarding livelihood issues in his constituency, the situation facing Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik—as the commander of the ruling party—in central government affairs is like the calm before the storm. As voices demanding internal party innovation and personnel reform erupt following the defeat in the June 3 local elections, the conflict between factions over the future of Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk is reaching its peak.
"Alternatives and the Future," a group of reformist lawmakers within the party, and lawmakers from the pro-Han Dong-hoon faction have unanimously launched all-out pressure for Leader Jang Dong-hyuk’s immediate resignation. Representative Lee Seong-kwon, who serves as the secretary of Alternatives and the Future, stated, "The only thing Leader Jang needs to do right now is to cleanly acknowledge responsibility for the alienation of public sentiment and step down unconditionally." Regarding the rebound in the party's approval ratings after the election, he delivered a scathing blow, saying, "There is no place for Leader Jang to stand here. Do not mistake this for his own achievement."
Offensives from both within the leadership and outside the National Assembly have also intensified. Youth Supreme Council Member Woo Jae-jun engaged in a war of words with the faction in power during a public Supreme Council meeting, calling for the "resignation of the entire leadership." In addition, independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon added fuel to the fire of calls for resignation by appearing on a broadcast and sharply criticizing Chairman Jang, stating, "Chairman Jang lost his authority as a leader of a conservative party a long time ago."
On the other hand, Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down, placing the push for a "nationwide re-election" due to the ballot shortage and the launch of a special prosecutor at the forefront. Through his social media, Chairman Jang criticized those calling for his resignation, stating, "Youth and citizens are fighting on the streets, shouting for a re-election, but you are too busy demanding my resignation to even pay attention." He accused them of instead labeling him as an extreme right-winger or a proponent of election fraud. He continued, "Now is the time to launch the special prosecutor first. It is time to look only to the people," refusing to waver in his determination to see the race through. Amidst the intensifying head-on clash between factions, lawmakers from the party's reformist faction urged Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik to make a decision, demanding that a general assembly of lawmakers be convened by the upcoming 16th to resolve the issue of Party Leader Jang Dong-hyuk's future.
Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik, who took the helm at a time when internal conflict was on the verge of explosion, is maintaining a very cautious and neutral stance, seemingly mindful of the explosive nature of the issue. Regarding the reformist lawmakers' fierce demand to convene a general assembly, Floor Leader Jeong maintained the position that "thorough review" is necessary first.
In an effort to mediate the internal turmoil and find a rational breakthrough, Floor Leader Jeong stated, "I will give deep consideration to the request made by the Alternatives and Future faction to convene a general assembly on the 16th by this weekend and provide a final answer." The solution Floor Leader Jeong will present this weekend after deep deliberation, as he faces the dual challenges of party unity and reform, is expected to become a critical turning point in resolving the internal conflict.
Statements and announcements by People Power Party committees, special committees, spokespersons, etc.
Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong: “Now is the time to check the runaway power of the massive ruling party instead of internal conflicts”
First, People Power Party Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong offered a cool-headed assessment of the recent local election results and directly refuted calls for the party leader's resignation raised by some within the party, pointing out that the party must focus on its inherent role as an opposition party. Secretary General Jeong emphasized, “The results of the June 3 local elections have given the People Power Party another chance, even amidst the stern rebuke of the people,” adding, “We must evaluate the results objectively, taking into account the harsh political landscape following the impeachment and presidential election defeat, and the fact that the Lee Jae-myung administration has been in power for less than a year.” He continued, “While the Democratic Party continues to engage in disputes over responsibility and conflicts over policy direction regarding the local election results, there is absolutely no reason for us to walk the same path of division while witnessing the internal strife of the opposing camp.”
Secretary General Jeong urged, “The People Power Party is currently facing a crisis of undermining national order that is more urgent than an internal power struggle.” He added, “The severity of the National Election Commission’s mismanagement, which began with the ballot shortage, is growing over time, and it is our duty to protect the safety of those participating in rallies to defend suffrage and the ongoing cries of the people at Seoul Olympic Park.” He further emphasized, “We must thoroughly investigate the truth behind the infringement of citizens’ suffrage rights, resolve distrust in the overall election management system, and restore fairness.”
In particular, regarding calls from some quarters for the party leader’s resignation, Secretary General Jeong pointed out, “Some factions have been arguing since before the election that the party leader must step down, citing all sorts of reasons such as the possibility of a complete defeat in local elections or stagnant approval ratings.” He continued, “However, despite the party’s approval ratings recently rebounding to record their highest levels since Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk took office and reaching an all-time high, they are once again pressuring for his resignation as if the answer has already been predetermined.” In addition, he urged, “While diverse voices may emerge within the party, if they consistently call for resignation, how will the public and party members perceive their true intentions?” He added, “Please do not be divided; it is time to unite and fulfill the proper role of an opposition party in accordance with the public sentiment’s mandate to keep the massive ruling party in check.”
Senior Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon: “NEC Must Be Completely Disbanded for Failing Election Management and Excessive Bonus Feast”
Park Sung-hoon, Senior Spokesperson for the People Power Party, exposed the fact that the National Election Commission, which caused great chaos through poor election management, actually held a massive bonus feast internally. He called for reforms that go beyond personnel reshuffling and amount to the dissolution of the organization. Chief Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon began by stating, “The National Election Commission’s moral laxity and reckless management have already plummeted to an incurable level.” He continued, “Despite having collapsed the election system and left the organization in ruins due to unprecedented mismanagement, the reality has been exposed to the whole world that behind the scenes, they have been holding ugly money parties, treating taxpayers’ money like pocket money.” Park rebuked the Commission, saying, “Not long after bowing their heads over last year’s ballot paper smuggling scandal, the Commission pushed ahead with the payment of performance bonuses exceeding 10 billion won—amounting to 1.07 billion won over the allocated budget—ahead of this year’s local elections.” He asked, “What on earth was recognized as an achievement that allowed them to hold these excess spending parties for two consecutive years?” He also pointed out the incompetence in budget execution, stating, “The National Election Commission increased its total budget to the 500 billion won era this year, claiming it would enhance fairness, but it failed to execute even half of the allocated budget for managing the most important local elections.” He sharply criticized the commission, saying, “This proves that they did not fail to manage the elections because they lacked money, but because they lacked both the will and the ability to work.” He further strongly criticized the commission, asking, “While the public is worried about their livelihoods due to high inflation and high interest rates, is this selfish group, which only looks out for its own interests and security, truly a public service organization of the Republic of Korea?”
Furthermore, regarding the commission’s internal investigation policy, Chief Spokesperson Park pointed out, “They have turned a blind eye to the independent truth-finding demanded by the public and have once again chosen the path of a self-investigation by putting Acting Commissioner Wi Cheol-hwan—a close friend of President Lee Jae-myung—at the forefront.” He remarked, “This is nothing more than a case of a thief investigating another thief.” In addition, he warned, “The status of an independent body guaranteed by the Constitution is not a bulletproof shield to conceal incompetence and negligence,” adding, “The National Election Commission must offer a sincere apology to the people and accept legal responsibility willingly; if it attempts to evade responsibility, it will face even greater ruin.”
Chief Floor Spokesperson Choi Su-jin: “Condemning NEC’s ‘Meal Buddy’ Self-Investigation; Parliamentary Investigation and Special Counsel Must Be Introduced”
Choi Su-jin, Chief Floor Spokesperson for the People Power Party, strongly criticized the National Election Commission’s negligence and indications of evidence destruction during the recent local elections. She argued that since the Commission’s internal investigation cannot be trusted, a parliamentary investigation and a special prosecutor must be pursued simultaneously. Chief Spokesperson Choi Su-jin criticized the situation, stating, “The election, which should have been the flower of democracy, has turned into a complete mess due to the incompetence of the National Election Commission (NEC). Following the absurd incident where citizens could not vote due to a shortage of ballots, evidence was even destroyed by secretly discarding the ballot boxes at the problematic polling station.” She added, “The NEC, which should have undergone a complete transformation following the past controversies over ‘basket voting’ and hiring irregularities, is still displaying the height of complacency.” Furthermore, regarding the NEC’s formation of an internal fact-finding committee, she dismissed it, saying, “The very idea that the party responsible for the problem intends to investigate itself is far removed from the public’s expectations.”
Chief Spokesperson Choi continued, “In particular, Wi Cheol-hwan, the Acting NEC Commissioner, was appointed based on a personal connection with President Lee Jae-myung, having been ‘dinner buddies’ during their days at the Judicial Research and Training Institute; he was a figure who faced criticism regarding his lack of expertise from the start.” She sharply remarked, “I cannot understand how the person responsible for the total disaster of this election can claim to fairly investigate his own wrongdoings.” At the same time, he criticized the Election Commission for losing its impartiality, stating, “The Gyeonggi Provincial Election Commission granted a free pass even when a Democratic Party local council candidate included false information in campaign materials, and concealed errors in the vote counting during the last general election for two months.”
Chief Spokesperson Choi urged, “Self-investigations akin to leaving a cat in charge of the fish cannot cut out the rotten roots of the Election Commission.” He added, “The People Power Party demands a two-track reform: forming a special parliamentary investigation committee with equal participation from both ruling and opposition parties to uncover administrative failures, while simultaneously accepting a special prosecutor to thoroughly investigate illegal acts.” Furthermore, he asserted, “The Democratic Party’s delaying tactic of waiting for the results of the parliamentary investigation before appointing a special prosecutor is merely a deception to allow the corruption of the Election Commission to go unchecked.” He affirmed, “The People Power Party will create an election system that the public can trust through a truth-finding investigation without exceptions and fundamental reform of the Election Commission.”
Chief Floor Spokesperson Choi Su-jin: “Democratic Party’s Monopoly on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee Chairmanship is a Declaration of Parliamentary Dictatorship”
Choi Su-jin, Chief Floor Spokesperson for the People Power Party, strongly protested the Democratic Party’s declaration to monopolize the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee ahead of the formation of the second half of the 22nd National Assembly, calling it an outrage that shakes the foundation of parliamentary democracy. Chief Spokesperson Choi asserted, “The Democratic Party’s floor leader firmly stated that the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee is not subject to negotiation, directly denying the principle of distribution that has been regarded as the minimum custom of parliamentary cooperation.” She strongly argued, “This is a declaration of war to unilaterally operate the National Assembly for political purposes—such as extending the administration and forcing through legislation like the special prosecutor bill to drop charges against President Lee Jae-myung—without any regard for the people.” She further explained, “The public sentiment revealed in the recent local elections was a warning to both the ruling and opposition parties, as well as a stern demand for the National Assembly to stabilize state affairs through dialogue and cooperation.” Chief Spokesperson Choi pointed out, “Nevertheless, the Democratic Party is blatantly revealing its intention to engage in unilateral legislative dominance by claiming it will monopolize the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee following the Speakership of the National Assembly.” He criticized them, stating, “While they verbally emphasize bills for the people’s livelihood and a working National Assembly, they have leveraged their majority seats to ignore public discussion, agreements with the opposition, and even warnings from the media, focusing solely on forcing through bills.” In particular, he lashed out, “The Lee Jae-myung administration’s legislation to seize control of the media and the judiciary, along with its unilateral populist policies aimed at consolidating power, was a dangerous attempt to reduce the National Assembly to a mere tool of the regime.”
Chief Spokesperson Choi warned, “Far from reflecting or introspecting, the Democratic Party is maintaining an arrogant attitude of continuing its legislative dominance in the second half of the year by defending the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee.” He added, “The Democratic Party’s reckless behavior, which disregards parliamentary democracy, must stop immediately. If such self-righteousness continues, the harsh judgment against them will ultimately fall on the shoulders of the people.” In addition, he added, “The People Power Party will strive to the end to normalize the National Assembly and restore cooperative governance, and will resolutely fight against the Democratic Party’s legislative unilateralism and abuse of power.”
Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul: “Condemning the Arrogance of the National Election Commission for Planning a Ceremonial Party for Awards Amidst Chaotic Election Management”
People Power Party Spokesperson Cho Yong-sul strongly criticized the National Election Commission (NEC) for establishing plans to reward employees immediately after the election, even amidst controversies over poor election management and infringement of suffrage rights, and demanded thorough self-reflection and accountability.
Spokesperson Cho pointed out, “According to media reports, it was revealed that the NEC had established reward plans ahead of the June 3 local elections,” adding, “They only belatedly halted the reward process after the ballot shortage and controversies over poor election management shook the nation and a fact-finding investigation began.” Spokesperson Cho criticized, “What is even more absurd is that even when the ‘basket voting’ scandal, which shocked the public during the last election, occurred, the National Election Commission (NEC) effectively held a celebratory party by awarding commendations to 60 employees.” He asked, “Does it truly align with common sense to reward themselves rather than reflect on their actions, even though the people’s right to vote was compromised?”
Spokesperson Cho continued, “The fact that they established reward plans as a matter of custom even before the election was over clearly demonstrates how arrogant the NEC organization has become, trapped in its own world.” He sharply remarked, “The NEC’s malpractices have reached a point where the very existence of the organization must be debated, as evidenced by the recent controversy over restricting voting rights, the cheating scandal, and even errors in entering election results.” He further rebuked, “They deserve severe criticism for prioritizing reward leave and special promotions over preparing for a fair election, despite receiving similar reprimands every time.” Spokesperson Cho stated, “This is by no means a matter that is resolved simply because the awards were suspended belatedly following growing public debate,” and demanded, “They must clearly explain to the public why such a complacent plan was formulated and who approved it.” Furthermore, he urged, “What the National Election Commission needs to do now is not self-praise, but thorough self-reflection and a responsible attitude,” adding, “They must bear in mind that what the Commission, having completely lost the public’s trust, needs right now is not a flashy award, but a reform at the level of dismantling itself.”
Spokesperson Ham In-kyung, “The Democratic Party’s obsession with the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee is an arrogance attempting to neutralize parliamentary checks and balances”
People Power Party Spokesperson Ham In-kyung strongly criticized the Democratic Party’s insistence on holding the chairmanship of the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, calling it an attempt to neutralize even the minimal safeguards designed to prevent the legislative unilateralism of a massive power. Spokesperson Ham stated, “The justification the Democratic Party offers for insisting they cannot relinquish the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee is even more astonishing,” adding, “They are spouting sophistry claiming that if the People Power Party takes the chairmanship, major legislation and national agendas pushed by the government and the ruling party could be delayed.” Spokesperson Ham dismissed the argument, stating, “This statement amounts to the Democratic Party itself admitting that the chairmanship is a position capable of checking and reviewing the legislation of the government and the ruling party. It is tantamount to confessing that the Legislation and Judiciary Committee serves as a check mechanism against legislative unilateralism, which is why the Democratic Party must absolutely not take the position.” Spokesperson Ham continued, “The Legislation and Judiciary Committee is the final gateway of the National Assembly, where bills passed by each standing committee are reviewed one last time before being brought to the plenary session.” He emphasized, “The reason the Speaker of the National Assembly has long been held by the largest party and the Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee by the second-largest party is due to the most fundamental principle of democracy that power must be checked.” He then pointed out, “I cannot help but ask why the Democratic Party is so obsessed with the position of Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, even though they currently hold the President, the Speaker, and a majority of seats in the National Assembly.” He criticized, “What is so urgent that they are trying to monopolize even the National Assembly’s last check and balance?”
Spokesperson Ham argued, “Isn’t this a ploy to unilaterally push through controversial ‘shielding’ legislation, such as erasing President Lee Jae-myung’s guilt, and various contentious bills without any brakes?” He asserted, “The more the Democratic Party insists on holding the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, the greater the public’s suspicion and distrust will become.” Furthermore, raising his voice, he stated, “Power that refuses checks and balances inevitably becomes arrogant, and arrogant power eventually harms the people,” adding, “If the Democratic Party truly desires legitimacy, they must first step down from the position of Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee must become the last bastion protecting South Korean democracy, not a legislative highway for a specific political party.” hang5247@hanmail.net
