"Sweeping Up" Idol and Baseball Tickets with Macros... 30-Year-Old Scalper Caught After Pouring 250 Million Won

Gwangju Police Refer Case to Prosecution Without Detention on Charges of Violating Performing Arts Act and National Sports Promotion Act - Mobilized 44 Other Accounts to Buy Up 1,642 Tickets... Demanded Up to 14 Times the Price - Application for Preservation of Criminal Proceeds of 250 Million Won, Recovery Measures Taken

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = A scalper in his 30s has been arrested by police for pocketing hundreds of millions of won by using macro programs to purchase large quantities of tickets for popular idol concerts and professional baseball games, and then reselling them for up to 14 times the original price. The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had referred a man in his 30s, identified as A, to the prosecution on the 5th without detention on charges of obtaining illicit profits by purchasing tickets in bulk using macro programs and reselling them as scalpers (violations of the Performing Arts Act, the National Sports Promotion Act, obstruction of business, and the Information and Communications Network Act).

According to the police, A mobilized a total of 44 other people's accounts from July 2023 to early March of this year. A is suspected of purchasing a total of 1,642 tickets, including those for concerts and baseball, by either using macro programs directly or through professional ticketing agents.

The investigation revealed that A sold these tickets on online ticket trading sites at premiums ranging from two to as much as fourteen times the original price. The total revenue generated through this scheme amounted to approximately 628 million won, of which A purely pocketed as criminal proceeds amounted to about 250 million won. The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency has applied to the court for a forfeiture preservation order regarding approximately 250 million won in criminal proceeds obtained by Mr. A through ticket scalping, and has begun full-scale recovery measures.

A police official emphasized, "Using macro programs to reserve tickets for performances or professional baseball is clearly illegal," and stated, "To create a healthy culture and sports viewing environment free from ticket scalping, we will continue to track down such illegal acts to the end and respond strictly."
