구미시는 11일부터 13일까지 3일간 구미시민운동장에서 ‘제20회 전국장애인육상선수권대회 및 제3차 국가대표 선발대회’를 개최한다고 밝혔다.
이번 대회는 대한장애인육상연맹과 경상북도장애인체육회가 공동 주최하며, 경상북도장애인육상연맹과 구미시장애인체육회가 주관한다.
대회에는 전국 각지에서 선수와 임원, 관계자 등 550여 명이 참가해 열띤 경쟁을 펼친다. 참가 선수들은 100m와 5,000m를 비롯해 멀리뛰기, 높이뛰기 등 다양한 트랙·필드 종목에서 그동안 갈고닦은 기량을 선보일 예정이다.
올해로 20회를 맞은 전국장애인육상선수권대회는 국내 장애인 육상 분야를 대표하는 권위 있는 대회 중 하나로 평가받고 있다. 국제패럴림픽위원회(IPC)와 국제육상경기연맹(IAAF) 경기 규정을 적용해 운영되며, 국내 최정상급 선수들이 참가하는 무대다.
특히 이번 대회는 2026년 나고야 장애인 아시아게임 국가대표 선발전을 겸해 개최돼 선수들의 경쟁이 한층 치열할 것으로 전망된다.
구미시는 지난해 개최된 아시아육상경기선수권대회의 성공적인 운영 경험을 바탕으로 이번 대회 역시 원활하게 치를 수 있도록 경기 운영과 선수단 지원에 만전을 기하고 있다.
박흥식 대한장애인육상연맹 회장은 “우수한 스포츠 인프라를 갖춘 구미에서 전국장애인육상선수권대회를 개최하게 돼 의미가 크다”며 “선수들이 최고의 경기력을 발휘하고 서로 화합하는 축제의 장이 되기를 기대한다”고 말했다.
김장호 구미시장은 “대한민국 장애인 육상을 대표하는 대회가 구미에서 열리게 돼 매우 뜻깊다”며 “이번 대회가 장애인 체육 발전과 우수 선수 발굴의 계기가 되길 바라며, 참가자들이 안전하고 편안하게 대회에 임할 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, “It is very meaningful that a competition representing South Korea’s Paralympic athletics is being held in Gumi,” adding, “I hope this event serves as an opportunity for the development of Paralympic sports and the discovery of outstanding athletes, and we will spare no support to ensure that participants can compete safely and comfortably.”
