브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 정몽규 대한축구협회장이 2026 북중미 월드컵을 끝으로 협회장직에서 물러나겠다고 공식 선언했다.
정 회장은 오는 7월 19일(현지시간) 폐막하는 2026 북중미 월드컵 이후 사직서를 제출할 계획이다.
정 회장은 29일 공식 성명서를 통해 “이번 월드컵 이후 축구협회장 자리에서 물러나고자 한다”며 “대표팀이 본선에서 최고의 성과를 내도록 전폭적으로 지원하는 것이 협회장으로서의 마지막 소임이라 생각하고 최선을 다하겠다”고 전했다.
앞서 정 회장은 지난해 2월 치러진 선거에서 85.6%라는 압도적인 지지율을 얻으며 4선 연임에 성공한 바 있다.
임기가 남아있음에도 불구하고 이 같은 결단을 내린 배경에는 월드컵을 앞둔 대표팀을 향한 염려와 협회의 인적 쇄신에 대한 고민이 깊었기 때문으로 풀이된다.
