하월 3세는 28일 부산 기장 아시아드 컨트리클럽에서 열린 1라운드에서 5언더파 65타를 기록하며 팀 동료 브라이슨 디섐보, 하이플라이어즈 GC의 스캇 빈센트와 함께 리더보드 최상단에 이름을 올렸다.
경기 후 열린 공식 기자회견에서 하월 3세는 코스 적응 과정과 전략적인 플레이 운영, 그리고 디섐보와의 경쟁 구도에 대한 생각을 차분히 밝혔다.
Q: 오늘 5언더파 65타를 기록했는데, 전체적인 라운드 소감은?
A) 새로운 코스에서 대회 라운드를 치를 때는 코스의 세세한 특징과 흐름을 익히는 과정이 필요하다. 그런 점을 고려하면 오늘은 기대했던 수준 이상으로 좋은 플레이를 펼친 것 같다. 지난해 대회 코스도 좋았지만 이번 코스는 개인적인 플레이 스타일에 더 잘 맞는 느낌이다. 전반과 후반 분위기가 다르고 전략적으로 생각해야 할 부분이 많아 흥미로운 코스라고 생각한다.
Q: 팀 동료 브라이슨 디섐보와 함께 공동 선두에 오른 소감은?
A) 팀 관점에서는 굉장히 좋은 일이다. 하지만 개인전만 놓고 보면 브라이슨이 조금 아래쪽에 있었으면 좋겠다는 생각도 든다. 브라이슨은 거의 매 대회에서 뛰어난 경기력을 보여주는 선수다. 내 이름이 그의 옆에 있다는 건 나 역시 좋은 경기를 하고 있다는 의미라고 생각한다. 그는 함께 플레이하기 좋은 선수이자 훌륭한 주장이고, 항상 큰 동기부여를 준다.
Q: 지난해 마지막까지 우승 경쟁을 펼쳤던 경험을 서로 이야기하기도 하나?
A) 서로 장난스럽게 이야기하곤 한다. 특히 브라이슨이 그런 이야기를 자주 꺼내며 놀리기도 한다. 하지만 세계 최고의 선수 중 한 명과 마지막 순간까지 경쟁했던 경험은 정말 특별했다. 마지막에 그가 우승을 확정짓는 모습을 지켜본 것도 인상적이었다. 브라이슨은 LIV 골프에서 리더십과 경기력 모두 뛰어난 모습을 보여주고 있고, 리그 발전을 위해서도 굉장히 중요한 역할을 하고 있다.
Q: 이번 코스와 지난해 코스를 비교했을 때 가장 큰 차이점은 무엇인가?
A) 이번 코스는 지난해보다 조금 더 짧지만 훨씬 전략적인 스타일이다. 지난해 코스는 티샷에서 비교적 자유롭게 드라이버를 사용할 수 있었지만, 이번 코스는 위치 선정이 훨씬 중요하다. 러프로 들어가면 핀 가까이 공략하기가 매우 어려워지고, 긴 거리의 까다로운 투퍼트나 어려운 칩샷 상황이 자주 나온다. 그린 자체는 크지만 경사가 심하기 때문에 결국 티샷을 페어웨이에 보내는 것이 가장 중요하다고 본다.

Q: 2번 홀 이글 상황을 설명해달라.
A) 약간 다운힐 바람이 부는 상황에서 약 90야드 정도가 남아 있었고, 60도 웨지로 치기에 완벽한 거리였다. 물론 좋은 거리라고 해서 항상 홀 가까이 붙거나 들어가는 것은 아니지만, 샷을 하기에는 이상적인 조건이었다. 공이 사라졌을 때는 그린을 넘어간 줄 알았는데 갤러리의 환호를 듣고 홀인된 것을 알게 됐다. 이글은 언제나 반가운 순간이고 자주 나오는 장면이 아니기 때문에 더욱 기분 좋았다.

Charles Howell III of Crushers GC delivered a steady, composed performance in the opening round of LIV Golf Korea, finishing in a share of the lead. On May 28 at Asiad Country Club in Gijang, Busan, Howell posted a 5-under-par 65 to sit atop the leaderboard alongside teammate Bryson DeChambeau and Scott Vincent of Iron Heads GC.
Speaking at the official post-round press conference, Howell reflected on adapting to a new course, his strategic approach, and his friendly rivalry with DeChambeau.
Q: You shot a 5-under 65 today. What are your thoughts on the round overall?
A: Whenever you play a tournament round on a brand-new course, there’s always a learning curve as you figure out its nuances and rhythm. With that in mind, I think I played even better than I expected. Last year’s venue was excellent, but this course suits my game much better. The front and back nines feel very different, and it really demands strategic thinking, which makes it a fun and engaging course to play.
Q: How does it feel to be tied for the lead with your teammate, Bryson DeChambeau?
A: From a team perspective, it’s great. But individually, I wouldn’t mind seeing Bryson a little further down the leaderboard. He brings top-level form to almost every event, so seeing my name alongside his tells me I’m playing well. He’s a great teammate, an excellent captain, and he does a fantastic job keeping everyone motivated.
Q: Do you ever talk about your head-to-head battle for the title last year?
A: We joke about it quite a bit. Bryson brings it up often to tease me. But honestly, competing down to the wire with one of the best players in the world was a special experience. Watching him close it out was impressive. He’s doing an outstanding job in LIV Golf, both as a leader and as a player, and he’s a key figure in the league’s growth.
Q: What’s the biggest difference between this year’s course and last year’s?
A: This course is a bit shorter, but much more strategic. Last year, you could hit driver freely off the tee, but here, positioning is critical. If you miss the fairway and end up in the rough, it becomes very difficult to attack the pins, often leaving long two-putts or tricky chips. The greens are large but heavily contoured, so everything really comes down to finding the fairway.
Q: Can you walk us through your eagle on the 2nd hole?
A: I had about 90 yards left with a slight helping wind, which is a perfect number for a 60-degree wedge. Of course, even with a good number, you don’t always expect it to finish close or go in, but it set up nicely. When the ball disappeared, I initially thought it had gone long over the green, but then I heard the crowd react and realized it had dropped. Eagles are always a bonus—they don’t come around often, so it felt great.
