[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] LIV 골프 코리아 첫날 경기에서 5언더파 65타를 기록하며 상위권에 오른 브라이슨 디섐보가 한국 팬들의 뜨거운 응원에 감사를 표했다.
디섐보는 작년 대회와 코스 성격이 완전히 달라졌음에도 뛰어난 샷 감각을 유지하며 이틀 연속 한국 대회 우승을 정조준했다. 경기 후 오후 미디어센터에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 그는 최근 바꾼 스윙 비결과 함께 한국 시장에서 스킨케어 제품을 구매한 일상까지 유쾌하게 털어놓았다.
크러셔스 GC 주장 브라이슨 디섐보와 팀 동료 찰스 하웰 3세는 지난해 인천 잭 니클라우스 골프클럽에서 열린 LIV 골프의 첫 한국 대회 당시 개인 우승 경쟁을 펼쳤으며, 디섐보가 막판 버디 두 개를 잡아내며 우승을 차지했다. 이번 주에는 코스와 개최지가 달라졌지만, 두 선수는 다시 한번 아시아드 컨트리클럽에서 열린 LIV 골프 코리아 1라운드 종료 후 리더보드 최상단에 이름을 올렸다. 디섐보와 하웰 3세는 5언더파 65타를 기록하며 하이플라이어즈 GC의 스캇 빈센트와 함께 공동 선두에 올랐다
[다음은 디섐보와의 경기 후 인터뷰 기자회견]
Q: 경기 초반 흐름이 좋아 매우 낮은 스코어를 기대했을 것 같다.
A) 10번 홀 버디 이후 흐름을 잘 이어가면 특별한 라운드가 될 수 있겠다고 생각했다. 그러나 이후 다소 흐름이 가라앉았다. 13번 홀에서는 좋은 샷을 날렸으나 예상보다 멀리 가면서 결국 3퍼트를 기록했다. 다음 홀에서도 좋은 샷에 따른 보상이 없었고, 15번 홀(파5)까지 비슷한 상황이 이어지며 흐름이 끊겼다.
하지만 16번 홀에서 다시 집중해 버디를 잡으며 끝까지 버텼다. 17번과 18번 홀에서도 무난한 스윙을 이어갔으나 더 이상의 큰 흐름은 나오지 않은 채 차분하게 마무리됐다. 경기 초반 분위기가 뜨거우면 '58타나 59타 같은 라운드가 또 나올 수 있을까' 하는 기대감을 갖게 된다. 그럼에도 전반적으로 만족스러운 경기력을 보여준 좋은 라운드였다.
Q: 통계적으로 이번 라운드는 LIV 골프 커리어 중 최고의 아이언 플레이로 꼽힌다. 최근 이 부분에 어느 정도 집중하고 있는가?
A) 스윙을 개선하기 위해 지속적으로 노력하고 있으며, 특히 그린브라이어 대회 때의 편안했던 감각을 되찾고자 한다. 현재 그 수준에 거의 근접했다고 느낀다. 아로니민크 대회와 마스터스 전 몇 주 동안에도 거의 다 왔다는 느낌을 받았으며, 그린브라이어 때처럼 플레이할 수 있는 상태에 가까워졌다.
금일 경기는 볼을 플레이 가능한 안전한 위치에 두는 데 집중했다. 실수가 나오더라도 최대한 방어가 가능한 곳으로 미스하고자 노력했다. 후반에는 운이 다소 따르지 않았지만, 아이언 감각이 확실히 좋아지고 있음을 체감하고 있어 만족스럽다.
Q: 이번 주 기자회견에서 팀 골프의 가치를 강조했다. 현재 팀이 3타 차 선두를 달리고 있는데, 경기 중 팀 순위를 어느 정도 의식하는가?
A) 경기 중에는 팀 상황을 파악하기 어려워 우리의 정확한 위치를 알지 못했다. 경기 중에 팀 스코어를 더 자주 확인할 수 있기를 바란다. 18번 홀에 이르러서야 팀이 선두라는 사실을 알았고, 3타 차 리드를 굳히기 위해 이번 업앤다운은 반드시 성공시켜야겠다고 다짐했다.
팀 경쟁은 매우 중요하며, 그 가치가 현재 과소평가되어 있다고 생각한다. 크러셔스, 파이어볼스, 포에이시스 등 각 팀의 모자를 쓴 팬들을 보는 것은 큰 즐거움이다. 진심으로 팀 골프의 비전을 믿고 있으며 많은 선수들 역시 동의한다. 골프라는 스포츠를 아끼는 만큼, 향후 팀 골프가 어디까지 발전할 수 있을지 진지하게 고민하고 있다.

Q: 한국 대회 2년 연속 우승을 위해 남은 라운드에서 가장 중요한 보완 과제는 무엇인가?
A) 가장 중요한 요소는 퍼팅이다. 퍼트를 원하는 라인으로 안정적으로 굴리는 것이 핵심이다. 최근 힙 턴 위주로 스윙을 수정하면서 임팩트 구간에서 몸이 더 자유롭게 움직이게 되었고, 전체적인 볼 스트라이킹 감각은 꽤 좋은 편이다.
18번 홀에서 원하는 만큼 릴리즈를 하지 못하는 등 가끔 우측으로 밀리는 실수가 나오지만, 전반적으로는 훌륭한 볼 스트라이킹을 유지하고 있다. 결국 승패는 퍼팅에서 갈릴 것이므로, 3퍼트를 방지하고 안정적인 퍼팅을 이어가는 데 집중하겠다.
Q: 국내 팬들의 관심이 매우 높다. 이번 방한 기간 동안 골프 외적으로 어떻게 시간을 보내고 있는가?
A) 가장 좋아하는 음식인 한국식 바비큐를 자주 즐기고 있다. 시내와 음식 시장 거리 등을 걸어보며 한국의 문화를 직접 경험하는 것이 매우 즐겁고 색다르다.
또한 올리브영 같은 매장을 방문해 새로운 스킨케어 제품도 구매했다. 외견이 조금 더 깔끔해진 것 같은데, 이에 대한 판단은 팬분들께 맡기겠다. 현재 한국 문화를 최대한 즐기며 뜻깊은 시간을 보내고 있다.

[Here is the English version of the artice] Bryson DeChambeau, who surged to the top of the leaderboard with a 5-under 65 on the opening day of LIV Golf Korea, expressed his deep gratitude for the passionate support of Korean fans.
Despite the course conditions being completely different from last year's tournament, DeChambeau maintained his sharp shot-making, setting his sights on a back-to-back title in South Korea.
During the post-round press conference at the media center, he shared the secrets behind his recent swing adjustments and playfully opened up about his daily life, including purchasing skincare products at a local Korean store.
Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC, and his teammate Charles Howell III engaged in a fierce battle for the individual title during LIV Golf's inaugural Korean event at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Incheon last year, with DeChambeau ultimately clinching the victory by sinking two birdies in the final stretch.
Although the venue and course changed this week, the two players once again found themselves at the very top of the leaderboard following the opening round of LIV Golf Korea at Asiad Country Club. DeChambeau and Howell III both carded a 5-under 65 to share the first-round lead alongside Scott Vincent of HyFlyers GC.
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome back to the media center Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC. 5-under 65, currently tied for first. You spoke about it earlier this week, but the last year in Korea, you and Charles battled it out for the individual title. The Crushers celebrated a team win. I don't know if you've had a chance to take a look at the leaderboard, but it feels like you picked up right before you left off.
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I guess Charles and I love Korea. We both played well today, played well last year.
It's a tricky golf course. Both golf courses are kind of tricky. If you're strategic and you execute good shots, you can make some birdies. Your ball-striking has to be premier; you can't fake it around here.
Then also on the greens, you've got to make sure you're rolling it pure. Really wanted to get up-and-down on the last. I felt like being 6-under through 10, I felt like something special was happening, and I simmered off, but still played some great golf. Surprised that I didn't go deeper.
But with a shot like what happened on 15 with it jumping 35 yards and going over into the water, you know, it kind of ruined my momentum a bit. I flagged a shot on 13 that flew 12 yards too long and went down the hill and three-putted.Those two things right there could have easily been three shots different there and shot 8- or 9-under today.
Q. You talked about the fans, as well. First day of the event. The crowds will only continue to get larger as we head into the weekend, but how nice was that support on 1 and the energy throughout the day?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, the support was fantastic out there. We had a great crowd for Thursday. Really impressed, and can't wait to see what Korea brings out this weekend.
Q. Are you aware of the oohs and aahs that emanate from the crowd, especially off the first tee? You could hear it as soon as you launched your shot.
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, it's a lot of fun. Koreans love their golf. They think it's quite special when you bring world-class players like this to Korea where they don't see it very often. We give them a different type of show. We hit it a lot farther, and it's quite impressive to see David and then just everybody else hit it with 185, 190 miles an hour ball speed. It's quite impressive. He was bombing it past me today, and I was just trying to keep it in the fairway. Albeit I was trying to hit it far, it was more reserved today.
Q. I asked Charles this question: Do you guys ever talk about last year? Do you go through shots? Do you just have a discussion over iced tea or something like that?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: He chirps back at me whenever I bring that up. He kinda gets pissed. He wants to win; he's a competitor just like me, and albeit I got him that week, you never know what could happen this year, and hopefully we give them a great show again this year.
Q. I also want to ask the about comparisons, the contrasts and maybe the similarities to last year's course. Are there enough similarities that you feel like you're kind of seeing the same kind of course at all?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: No, it's actually completely different. It's funny, we're just coincidentally playing great golf here. Yeah, the Jack Nicklaus golf course was a different test, and this one is quite different than that golf course last year.
I think, again, it's just a ball striker's golf course, and that's what Charles thrives on and that's what I've been working towards to get better at, and it paid off today.
Q. What do you think it's going to take to win your second straight tournament in Korea as far as what elements of the game do you have to work on going forward in the next three days?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I think it's a great question. I think for me, it's a lot about putting, making sure I'm rolling it on my lines consistently. I feel like I ball strike it pretty well out there. I'm learning my golf swing a little bit more.
I've changed my golf swing a little bit. I've been working on some hip turn stuff that's allowed me to feel freer through impact. Still have a couple right misses every once in a while, but that seemed to allow me to ball strike it pretty well, except 18. I just didn't turn it over as well as I could have. But the putting is what I have to focus on, make sure I'm rolling it well and not three-putting.
Q. We asked a lot of the gallery members today, who are they rooting for, and No. 1, of course, was pretty much you. We are obsessed about you, want to know what you're eating, what you're doing in Korea. So this is probably not a golf-related question, but we wanted to know what you're going to do while you're here in Korea.
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: A lot of Korean barbecue. It's my favorite. We walked around downtown a bit. It's been fun getting to see the culture. Also walking down food market street, I think, that was interesting. That was quite a wild experience. Really just taking in the culture.
Oh, I got some new skin care stuff from Olive Young or something like that. Hopefully I look better from it. I think I do. But the consensus is from you guys.
