양 기관은 28일 ‘AI특화 공동훈련센터 사업 킥오프 워크숍’을 열고 지역 산업 현장의 AI 기반 혁신과 실무형 인재 양성 계획을 공유했다.
이번 사업은 고용노동부와 한국산업인력공단이 추진하는 국가인적자원개발컨소시엄 사업의 하나로, 기업과 대학, 사업주단체 등이 공동훈련센터를 구성해 협약기업 재직자들에게 AI 중심 직무교육을 제공하고 산업 현장의 AI 전환을 지원하는 데 목적이 있다.
사업은 앞으로 3년간 추진되며, 단순 교육에 그치지 않고 POSTECH 인공지능연구원 소속 AI 전문인력이 직접 기업 현장의 문제를 진단하고 해결 방안을 함께 도출하는 멘토링 프로그램도 병행된다.
양 기관은 기업별 맞춤형 컨설팅과 실무 중심 지원을 통해 현장 적용 성과를 창출하고, 우수 사례는 향후 정부 지원사업과 실증·연구개발(R&D) 과제로 연계해 확장해 나갈 계획이다.
특히 이번 사업은 경상북도가 대응 예산을 지원하면서 지역 차원의 산업 AI 전환 기반을 강화했다는 점에서 의미를 더하고 있다. 포스코동반성장단 역시 지역 기업 지원과 협력 네트워크 구축에 참여해 대기업과 중소·중견기업 간 상생 협력 모델 확산에 힘을 보탤 예정이다.
핵심 협약기업으로는 광우, 메타즈, 삼성금속, 신화테크, 애경스페셜티, 엠에스파이프, 제일연마공업, 제일테크노스, 조선내화, 티씨테크 등 10개 기업이 참여한다. 이들 기업은 AI 교육과 현장 과제 발굴, 맞춤형 멘토링, 실증 중심 프로젝트 수행 등을 통해 제조 현장에 적용 가능한 AI 활용 모델 구축에 나선다.
서영주 POSTECH 인공지능연구원장은 “이번 사업은 기업들이 AI를 단순히 이해하는 수준을 넘어 실제 공정과 업무에 적용할 수 있도록 지원하는 실행형 인재양성 사업”이라며 “기업 현장의 문제를 진단하고 맞춤형 AI 기술 코칭과 멘토링을 통해 실질적인 성과 창출로 이어질 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다”고 말했다.
이어 “경북ICT융합산업진흥협회와 함께 철강·제조 산업 현장에 필요한 AI 실무역량을 확산하고, 지역 기업의 AI 전환 성공 사례를 만들어 산업 경쟁력 강화와 지역 혁신에 기여하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
한편 양 기관은 이번 워크숍을 시작으로 기업 수요조사와 맞춤형 AI 교육과정 운영, 현장 과제 발굴, AI 전담인력 멘토링, 후속 사업 연계 등을 단계적으로 추진할 예정이다. 이를 통해 경북 지역 철강·제조 분야 중소·중견기업의 AI 활용 역량 강화와 산업 전반의 생산성 향상에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

POSTECH and Gyeongbuk ICT Convergence Industry Promotion Association Launch Full-Scale Support for Manufacturing AI Transition
The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) and the Gyeongbuk ICT Convergence Industry Promotion Association are launching the "AI-Specialized Joint Training Center" project to support the AI transition (AX) of the steel and manufacturing industries in the Gyeongbuk region.
On the 28th, the two organizations held a "Kick-off Workshop for the AI-Specialized Joint Training Center Project" to share plans for AI-based innovation in local industrial sites and the cultivation of practical talent.
This project is part of the National Human Resource Development Consortium initiative promoted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea. Its purpose is to support the AI transition in industrial sites by having companies, universities, and employer associations form a joint training center to provide AI-centric job training to employees of partner companies.
The project will be implemented over the next three years. Going beyond simple training, it will also run in parallel with a mentoring program where AI specialists from the POSTECH Artificial Intelligence Research Institute directly diagnose problems in the corporate field and collaboratively develop solutions.
Both organizations plan to generate results through on-site application via customized consulting and practical support for individual companies, and to expand best practices by linking them to future government support programs and demonstration/R&D projects.
This project holds particular significance as Gyeongsangbuk-do Province has strengthened the foundation for industrial AI transformation at the regional level by providing matching funds. The POSCO Group for Shared Growth will also participate in supporting local companies and building cooperation networks, contributing to the spread of win-win cooperation models between large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Ten companies are participating as key signatory firms: Kwangwoo, Metaz, Samsung Metals, Shinwha Tech, Aekyung Specialty, MS Pipe, Jeil Abrasive Industry, Jeil Technos, Chosun Refractories, and TC Tech. These companies will set out to build AI utilization models applicable to manufacturing sites through AI education, identification of on-site tasks, customized mentoring, and the execution of demonstration-oriented projects. Seo Young-joo, Director of the AI Research Institute at POSTECH, stated, “This project is an action-oriented talent development initiative designed to support companies in applying AI to actual processes and business operations, moving beyond a mere understanding of the technology.” He added, “We will actively support the creation of tangible results by diagnosing on-site issues and providing customized AI technology coaching and mentoring.”
He further added, “Together with the Gyeongbuk ICT Convergence Industry Promotion Association, we will disseminate practical AI capabilities required in the steel and manufacturing industries and create successful AI transition cases for local companies to contribute to strengthening industrial competitiveness and regional innovation.”
Meanwhile, starting with this workshop, the two organizations plan to proceed in stages with corporate needs surveys, the operation of customized AI training courses, the identification of on-site projects, mentoring by dedicated AI personnel, and linking follow-up projects. Through these efforts, it is expected to contribute to strengthening the AI utilization capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies in the steel and manufacturing sectors of the Gyeongbuk region, as well as improving productivity across the entire industry.
