“Drank it instead of coffee, but there was a twist”… The betrayal of franchise milk tea and green tea lattes

It has been found that the caffeine content of tea beverages, such as matcha and green tea lattes and milk tea, which are popular at franchise cafes, varies by up to four times depending on the product.

Some milk tea products contain more caffeine than regular Americano, so pregnant women and those sensitive to caffeine are advised to exercise caution when consuming them.

In addition, the study revealed that the majority of products contain high levels of sugar and saturated fat that exceed the recommended daily intake, indicating that consumers need to carefully check nutritional information.

On the 28th, the Korea Consumer Agency announced the results of tests and investigations into the quality, safety, and price of 12 tea beverage products (6 matcha and green tea lattes and 6 milk teas) from six franchise cafe brands highly preferred by consumers.

The cafe brands included in the investigation were Mega MGC Coffee, Paik's Coffee, Starbucks, Ediya Coffee, Compose Coffee, and Twosome Place. First, the caffeine content per cup of tea beverages ranged from a minimum of 45mg to a maximum of 172mg, showing a difference of up to four times between products. This is equivalent to 11% to 43% of the maximum recommended daily intake for adults (400mg).

In particular, two products, Starbucks’ ‘Classic Milk Tea’ and Twosome Place’s ‘Royal Milk Tea,’ had a higher caffeine content per cup than a regular Americano (132mg based on a 250mL serving). This means that consumers who unwittingly choose these as coffee substitutes could end up consuming even more caffeine.

The Korea Consumer Agency advised, “If pregnant women consume two or more cups of these high-caffeine beverages a day, they may approach or exceed the recommended daily intake for pregnant women (300mg), so special caution is required.”

Sugar and saturated fat content were also higher than expected. The sugar content of a single cup of tea beverages amounted to 26% to 55% of the daily recommended intake (100g).

The product with the highest sugar content was Ediya Coffee’s ‘Matcha Latte’ (55g, 55% of the recommended intake), while the product with the lowest was Starbucks’ ‘Jeju Matcha Latte’ (26g, 26% of the recommended intake).

Saturated fat content also ranged from 33% to 79% of the daily recommended intake, indicating that consuming multiple cups of beverages in a day could easily exceed the limit.

Despite the high sugar content, there was a lack of avenues for consumers to control their intake. While Starbucks, Ediya Coffee, and Twosome Place offered options to adjust the amount of syrup or request ‘less sweet’ when ordering via their mobile apps, three other companies—Mega MGC Coffee, Paik's Coffee, and Compose Coffee—did not offer such options.

However, Compose Coffee has completed the addition of sugar level adjustment options for its Milk Tea and Green Tea Latte, while Mega MGC Coffee and Paik's Coffee announced plans to develop low-sugar products and incorporate syrup adjustment options in the future.

Furthermore, it was revealed that even for the same product from the same brand, there were significant variations in net volume depending on the store or the time of production. With volume differences ranging from as little as 36mL to as much as 119mL, meticulous management of manufacturing guidelines at the franchise headquarters level was required to ensure consistent taste and quantity.

Safety was excellent. None of the three types of pesticide residues, including dinotefuran, or metallic foreign substances were detected in any of the products, ensuring compliance with relevant food standards.

Meanwhile, the price of a single beverage ranged from 3,500 won to 6,100 won, showing a maximum difference of 1.7 times between products.

Mega MGC Coffee’s ‘Green Tea Latte’, Compose Coffee’s ‘Green Tea Latte’, and Paik's Coffee’s ‘Milk Tea’ were the cheapest, while Starbucks’ ‘Jeju Matcha Latte’ and ‘Classic Milk Tea’ were the most expensive.

The Korea Consumer Agency plans to continue providing information on the quality and safety of various food products through ‘Consumer 24’ to support consumers’ rational consumption habits.
