[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] LIV 골프 코리아 디펜딩 챔피언 '브라이슨 디섐보(Bryson James Aldrich DeChambeau)'가 부산 대회를 앞두고 “부산은 정말 아름다운 도시”라며 “골프를 통해 전 세계 사람들이 하나로 연결되는 것이 가장 큰 가치”라고 밝혔다. 최근 메이저 대회 부진과 LIV 골프를 둘러싼 불확실성에 대해서는 “결국 선수로서 해야 할 일은 좋은 골프를 하고 팬들과 소통하는 것”이라고 강조했다. 26일 기장군 아시아드 CC에서 가진 LIV 골프 코리아 기자회견에서 브라이슨 디섐보는 우승 의지·골프 철학 등을 밝혔다.

- 이번 코스와 잔디 상태에 대한 느낌은.
▲ 디섐보: 지난주와는 전혀 다른 스타일의 골프 코스”라며 “굉장히 흥미로운 도전이 될 것 같다. 잔디 종류가 우리가 평소 익숙한 타입과 달라 러프나 그린 주변에서 예상치 못한 샷들이 많이 나올 수 있다. 재미있는 장면도 많을 것 같고 선수들에게 색다른 시험대가 될 것”이라고 설명했다.
- 팀 동료와 우승 경쟁을 펼치는 기분은 어떤가.
▲ 디섐보: 정말 묘한 감정이다. 한편으로는 팀 동료를 응원하지만 또 반드시 이기고 싶기도 하다. 찰스 하월 3세는 정말 뛰어난 경쟁자였다. 압박 속에서도 최고의 샷을 해야 했고 마지막까지 치열한 승부였다. 결과적으로 중요한 퍼트를 성공시키면서 우승했지만 사실 결과는 언제든 뒤집힐 수 있는 경기였다.
- LIV 골프가 세계 각국을 돌며 대회를 개최하는 의미는.
▲ 디섐보: 2014년 일본과 호주에서 처음 해외 경험을 하면서 세상이 정말 넓다는 걸 깨달았다. 미국 시장도 대단하지만 세계에는 아직 충분히 주목받지 못한 시장들이 많다. LIV 골프는 그런 곳에서 골프를 성장시키는 역할을 하고 있다고 생각한다. 골프를 통해 문화적 장벽이 허물어지고 모두가 하나로 연결된다는 점이 가장 특별하다. 미국뿐 아니라 전 세계 골프 시장에는 모두 가치가 존재한다.
- 부산에 대한 인상은 어떤가.
▲ 디섐보: 부산은 정말 아름다운 도시다. 인천에서 기차를 타고 내려오면서 한국의 풍경을 즐겼고 부산에서는 바다와 해변을 경험할 수 있어 좋았다. 새로운 나라에서 새로운 문화를 체험하는 건 언제나 특별한 경험이다.
- 최근 메이저 대회 성적에 대한 생각은.
▲ 디섐보: 현재 스윙을 굉장히 열심히 다듬고 있다. 꿈의 타수인 58타를 기록했을 때의 감각으로 돌아가기 위해 노력 중이다. 최근 메이저 성적은 기대에 미치지 못했지만 골프는 원래 기복이 있는 스포츠다. 시즌 초반에는 두 차례 우승도 했고 좋은 흐름도 있었다. 결국 완벽한 선수는 없고 계속 노력하는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다.

- PIF 투자 철회설과 LIV 골프 미래에 대한 우려도 나온다.
▲ 디섐보: 예상보다 빠른 변화에 놀랐던 것은 사실이다. 우리가 예상하지 못한 방향으로 전개되기도 했다. 하지만 하나의 문이 닫히면 또 다른 문이 열린다고 생각한다. 팀 골프의 비즈니스 모델과 가능성을 여전히 긍정적으로 보고 있다. 국가와 도시, 지역 사회와 연결되는 팀 골프만의 가치가 분명 존재한다. 투자자들이 어떤 반응을 보일지는 지켜봐야 하지만 성공을 위해 최선을 다하고 있다.
- 자신의 골프 철학을 설명한다면.
▲디섐보: 전설적인 골퍼 벤 호건처럼 끊임없이 노력하는 자세를 중요하게 생각한다. 과학적 데이터와 연구를 많이 활용하지만 동시에 감각도 굉장히 중요하게 여긴다. 결국 데이터와 느낌, 운동 능력을 조화시키는 것이 핵심이다. 참고로 나의 롤모델은 벤 호건, 모 노먼, 타이거 우즈, 페인 스튜어트다.
- 팬들에게는 엔터테이너, 경기 중에는 승부사 이미지가 강하다.
▲ 디섐보: 상황에 따라 역할을 잘 구분하는 것이 중요하다. 경기 중에는 최대한 집중해야 하지만 동시에 팬들과의 소통도 잊지 않으려 한다. 경기가 잘 안 풀릴 때는 쉽지 않지만 억지로 가짜 모습을 보이고 싶지는 않다. 그럼에도 팬들에게 사인을 해주고 함께 시간을 보내는 건 늘 가장 중요하게 생각하는 가치다.
- 자신을 둘러싼 논란과 평가들은 어떻게 받아들이나.
▲ 디섐보: 사람들이 저를 두고 골프계에 최고의 존재라고도 하고 최악이라고도 한다. 하지만 나는 모든 의견을 존중한다. 제 목표는 단순히 우승만이 아니다. 골프가 사람들의 삶에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있다고 믿기 때문에 이 스포츠를 사랑한다. 메이저 우승을 하든 꼴찌를 하든 중요한 건 매일 최선을 다하는 것이다. 팬들의 미소와 아이들의 응원이 제가 다시 경기장으로 돌아오는 진짜 이유다.
- 현재 LIV 골프가 불확실한 상황인데 선수로서 어떤 마음가짐인가.
▲디섐보: 제가 할 일은 결국 목요일 첫 티샷에서 멋진 드라이브를 날리는 것이다. 투어의 운영과 경영은 다른 전문가들이 맡고 있다. 선수로서 나는 최고의 골프를 보여주고, 팬들에게 사인을 해주며 즐겁게 경기하는 본질적인 부분에 집중하려 한다.

세계 1, 2위 선수 참가… 한국팀 안병훈 등 출전

Ahead of 'LIV Golf Korea 2026', defending champion Bryson DeChambeau expressed his strong desire for a title defense and shared his profound philosophy on golf.
On the afternoon of the 26th, two days before the tournament's opening, an official press conference was held at the media center of Asiad Country Club (CC) in Gijang-gun, Busan. Despite recent disappointing performances in major tournaments and rumors regarding the withdrawal of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) investment, DeChambeau addressed the media with confidence.
"At the end of the day, my job is to fly a great drive on the first tee shot on Thursday," DeChambeau said, emphasizing his commitment to showcasing top-tier golf and connecting with his fans.

Q. How would you describe this week’s course and grass conditions at Asiad CC?
Bryson DeChambeau: This course presents a completely different style of golf compared to last week. It is going to be a very interesting challenge. The grass type is unfamiliar compared to what we are normally used to, which could lead to unexpected shots around the greens and out of the rough. I think there will be a lot of interesting moments this week, and it will definitely be a unique test for the players.
Q. What is it like competing against a teammate for a championship title?
Bryson DeChambeau: It is a really strange feeling. Part of you is rooting for your teammate, but another part of you really wants to beat him. Charles Howell III was an incredible competitor. I had to produce great shots under pressure throughout the final-round battle. In the end, I made a few key putts and was fortunate enough to win, but honestly, the result could have gone either way.
Q. LIV Golf has traveled to many countries this season. What has that experience meant to you personally?
Bryson DeChambeau: My first international experiences in Japan and Australia back in 2014 helped me realize how big the world really is. The U.S. market is incredible, but there are still many parts of the world that haven’t fully been reached by golf. I believe LIV Golf is helping grow the game in those markets. One of the most meaningful aspects of golf is its ability to break down cultural barriers and bring people together. There is value not only in the United States but all around the world.
Q. What are your impressions of Busan, Korea's traditional maritime city?
Bryson DeChambeau: Busan is truly a beautiful city. I enjoyed taking the train from Incheon and seeing the Korean countryside along the way. Being able to experience the ocean, the beaches, and a different culture in Busan has been really special. Experiencing a new culture in a new country is always a unique experience.
Q. How do you evaluate your recent performances in the majors, and what is your plan to overcome them?
Bryson DeChambeau: I have been working very hard on refining my golf swing. I am trying to regain the form and feel I had when I famously shot 58. My recent major results haven’t been what I wanted, but that’s golf—it is a sport with natural ups and downs. I had already won two events earlier this season and posted strong finishes. No player is perfect. The important thing is to keep working hard.
Q. There are concerns about LIV Golf’s future following rumors about the PIF investment situation. What are your thoughts as a player?
Bryson DeChambeau: The rapid developments were surprising, and things definitely moved quicker than we expected. But when one door closes, another one opens. I remain optimistic about the future of team golf and believe the LIV Golf business model still has strong value. There is a distinct value in team golf that connects with countries, cities, and local communities. We will have to wait and see how investors react, but we are doing our best to succeed.
Q. Could you explain your unique golfing philosophy?
Bryson DeChambeau: Like the legendary Ben Hogan, I believe a relentless work ethic and continuous effort are paramount. I utilize a lot of scientific data and research, but at the same time, feel is incredibly important to me. Ultimately, the core is to blend and harmonize data, feel, and athletic ability. For reference, my role models are Ben Hogan, Moe Norman, Tiger Woods, and Payne Stewart.
Q. To fans, you are an entertainer, but on the field, you have a fierce competitor image. How do you balance these roles?
Bryson DeChambeau: It is crucial to separate those roles depending on the situation. During the round, I have to stay as focused as possible, but at the same time, I try never to forget to connect with the fans. It is not easy when the game isn’t going well, but I don't want to fake a persona. Even so, signing autographs and spending time with fans is a value I always hold in the highest regard.
Q. How do you handle the various controversies and criticisms surrounding you?
Bryson DeChambeau: People say I am the best thing for golf, and others say I am the worst. However, I respect all opinions. My goal isn’t just about winning trophies. I love this sport because I truly believe golf can have a positive impact on people's lives. Whether I win a major or finish dead last, what matters is giving my absolute best every day. The smiles on fans' faces and the support from kids are the real reasons I keep coming back to the course.
Q. Given the current uncertainties surrounding LIV Golf, what is your final mindset facing this situation?
Bryson DeChambeau: At the end of the day, my job is to step up on the first tee on Thursday and blast a great drive. The commercial operations and management are handled by other experts. As a player, I intend to focus entirely on the core essence: playing my best golf, signing autographs for fans, and thoroughly enjoying the game.
