MEK Group, Iran's People's Mujahideen Organization; The Mojtaba Theocratic Regime, Which Shows No Mercy Toward Communist Mobs
Columnist Jeong Gil-seon
Progressive Islamic socialism was in vogue in Iran, and the figure who spearheaded this movement was Ali Shariati. To understand Iranian socialism and communism, one must know Ali Shariati. Shariati sought to integrate Marxism-Leninism with Shia Twelve Imams theology. This differed from the unofficial absorption of Leninist doctrines by Islamists on the Sunni side, such as Hassan Al-Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. From the perspective of traditional Shia theology, which interpreted Islam as a religion of struggle, he defined them as "Black Shia" or "Safavid Shia." In the case of the "Safavid Shia," the Safavid order was centered around a strong belief in mysticism and a savior. As the Safavid dynasty evolved from a mere armed group in the Azerbaijan region into a full-fledged monarchy, this order was gradually pushed aside and eventually eliminated by the Twelve-Imam Jafari sect. Therefore, while declaring his succession to this "Safavid Shia," Shariati distinguished his Islamic socialist ideology by labeling it "Red Shia."
Shariati asserted that a just society could only be built upon Islamic values, distinguishing himself from secular, atheistic communists. Shariati's original Marxist-Leninist theology and philosophy gained immense popularity among Iranian university students. At the time, secular intellectuals in Iran strongly criticized the jurists lecturing in rural areas, labeling them parasites who exploited illiterate peasants. Given the situation in Iran at the time, conservative jurists in the countryside engaged in usury against farmers. Although Islam strictly prohibited usury, these jurists were generating income through loans with annual interest rates exceeding 30%. At the same time, they opposed literacy campaigns, as this was necessary to exploit farmers through usury. This explains why extreme claims emerged labeling them as parasites who habitually deceived the people. Given these materialistic arguments, the ideology of the Shariati was highly radical among Iranian university students of the time; it gained immense popularity as an alternative for those weary of the Pahlavi dynasty's caste system.
The Shariati propagated their own Islamist philosophy, which advocated that Islamic jurists should be re-educated in Marxism-Leninism to establish an Islamic theocracy. This served as a catalyst for progressive Iranian university students to side with Ruhollah Khomeini, a conservative jurist who was gaining popularity during the Iranian Islamic Revolution. As Shariati was an anti-Westernist, he shared the anti-British and anti-American sentiments prevalent in Iranian society at the time and was a figure highly critical of Western-style democracy. Inspired by Shariati's ideology, individuals formed their own organization centered around him on September 5, 1965; this was the MEK (Mujahedin-E Khalq, the People's Mujahedin Organization). They gained full notoriety as a rebel organization when they launched an armed anti-government struggle against the Pahlavi dynasty in the 1970s. Subsequently, Shariati secretly linked with Ruhollah Khomeini, but this attempt was discovered, leading to his deportation to the United Kingdom. Shariati died of a pre-existing heart condition shortly after his exile. However, the MEK organization did not disappear; Masud Rajavi, a follower of Shariati, joined Khomeini's organization in Iran along with his wife, Maryam Rajavi, and continued the struggle. However, Masoud Rajavi was unable to participate directly, and his wife, Mariam, supported Khomeini. This was because Masoud was imprisoned at the time, having been sentenced to death and life imprisonment. During the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Mariam led her MEK comrades and, together with Khomeini, successfully overthrew the Pahlavi dynasty. Simultaneously, Masoud was also released. However, the MEK of the Masoud couple, who were revolutionary comrades, eventually split apart from Khomeini. Although they had formed an alliance to resist the massive Pahlavi regime, Western powers, and the United States, the MEK of the Masoud couple and Khomeini were ideologically incompatible. While they both dreamed of a theocracy, they could not agree on the theocracy of Khomeini, who was a traditional fundamentalist jurist, with the MEK of the Masoud couple, which possessed the spirit of Shariati and envisioned a socialist theocracy. Ultimately, Khomeini initiated a purge of the MEK, resulting in the execution of a significant number of its members. The surviving members fled the country and declared a struggle against the Iranian regime that spanned from Khomeini to Khamenei. Subsequently, Ali Khamenei became the new president, rising to the position of Rahbar, the Supreme Leader of Iran.
Ali Khamenei, who previously had a faint presence, stepped to the forefront of modern Iranian history following the simultaneous deaths of both the President and the Prime Minister in a terrorist attack by the MEK. Khamenei was present at the scene during the MEK bombing. He sustained a severe injury to his right arm during the attack, which subsequently became paralyzed, and it is said that he still has difficulty using his right arm to this day. Immediately after President Mohammad-Ali Rajai and Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar were assassinated by the MEK, the MEK, facing attacks from the Iranian government, relocated its base to the Republic of Iraq in Ba'ath Province in 1982, which was then at war with Iran. The Republic of Iraq in Ba'ath Province was a left-wing regime established on July 17, 1968, when Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr staged a coup to overthrow the previous government. Following the Iraq-U.S. War and the subsequent execution of Saddam Hussein, the MEK turned pro-American and pro-Israeli. The irony is that the United States, which so abhorred communism, is actually supporting the Islamic socialist-leaning MEK. The MEK, which had been operating within Iran under the directives of the United States or Mariam Rajavi, was thoroughly rooted out and eliminated by Ebrahim Raisi, causing it to disappear. The MEK then relocated to Iraq, Syria, and Turkey to continue its activities.
However, even while in Iraq, the MEK committed all manner of atrocities, including cooperating with the suppression of Iraqi democracy with the support of the United States. In July 2010, the Iraqi High Court issued arrest warrants for 39 MEK members, including Rajavi, citing evidence that they had committed crimes against humanity by being implicated with the former Iraqi security forces in suppressing uprisings against the pre-1991 Iraqi regime and massacring Iraqi civilians. At the same time, the United States lifted sanctions on the MEK as an international terrorist organization in 2012, making the group an international organization recognized by the U.S. Rajavi and some of his remnants remained in Iraq before relocating to Camp Ashraf 3 in Albania in 2018 through the mediation of the U.S. government, where they currently reside. They have since shifted their focus from past violent struggles to non-violent resistance, concentrating on establishing a secular Iran through peaceful means and engaging in online agitation and hacking. Furthermore, their activities shone brightly during the agitation campaigns for the 2022 Hijab protests. During the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, they actively participated in the demonstrations, supporting women's resistance aimed at overthrowing the Iranian regime. Subsequently, they served as a focal point for the protesters through propaganda and the expansion of the demonstrations.
They supported and promoted actions such as women removing their hijabs at protest sites and burning photographs of Supreme Leader Khamenei. They also contributed to the organization and expansion of the protests by disseminating information about the situation through social media and appealing for support from the international community. Despite the Iranian government's internet blockade, the MEK utilized satellite communications and other means to transmit on-site information, disseminating manipulated videos and photos to the world and instilling the perception that the Khamenei regime is suppressing human rights. This same behavior was observed during the protests in Iran spanning 2025 and 2026. The MEK stated that its affiliated organization, the "Resistance Units," directs, coordinates, and organizes protests within Iran, playing a role in protecting demonstrators against the regime's crackdown. The MEK updated and released a list of fatalities that occurred during the protests. It is highly likely that the news of the death toll reaching up to 12,000 was also based on figures from the MEK's updates. As of January 20, 2026, the MEK confirmed and disclosed the real names of 321 individuals and mobilized MEK supporters residing abroad—such as in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Toronto, Canada—to hold large-scale rallies in solidarity with protesters within Iran, calling for the "overthrow of dictatorship" and the "establishment of a free democratic republic." The National Congress of Iranian Resistance (NCRI), spearheaded by the MEK, is currently demanding that European nations designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and impose strong sanctions, such as the expulsion of Iranian diplomats and an oil embargo. The MEK views these protests not merely as economic objections but as an opportunity for regime change, and is focusing on maintaining the momentum of the demonstrations through its internal resistance network. In effect, given this, it is no different from having played a leading role in these protests. Iran has arrested all of these MEK communist remnants. They have sentenced the MEK communist "reds" who plotted the Iranian riots at the beginning of the year to death, and their executions are imminent. These are not innocent citizens, but rioters. Why are they being portrayed as "resistance singers" and packaged as innocent citizens unjustly sacrificed by a theocratic regime?
