광주역사민속박물관은 12일부터 8월 9일까지 기획전 ‘광주, 도시가 되어 온 시간’을 개최한다고 밝혔다. 이번 전시는 1896년 광주가 전남도청 소재지로 지정된 지 130주년이 되는 해이자, 1986년 광주직할시로 승격된 지 40주년을 맞아 광주의 도시 정체성을 확립하기 위해 마련됐다.
전시는 평범한 농촌 마을이었던 광주가 오늘날의 거대 도시로 성장하기까지의 여정을 사진, 지도, 엽서, 기록물 등 풍부한 사료를 통해 총 4부로 나누어 소개한다.
1부 ‘형성되는 도시’에서는 무진주, 무주, 광주목 등 시대별 명칭 변화와 함께 관아와 읍성을 중심으로 형성됐던 전통적인 공간 질서를 조명한다.
2부 ‘설계되는 도시’는 읍성 해체 이후 근대적 도시 구조로 재편되는 과정을 담았다. 격자형 시가지와 직선도로 등 식민 통치의 흔적이 남은 아픈 역사를 함께 살핀다.
3부 ‘확장되는 도시’에서는 광복 이후부터 1995년까지의 비약적인 성장을 다룬다. 산업화에 따른 도시 팽창, 직할시 승격, 광산권 편입 등 생활권이 대폭 넓어지는 과정을 생생하게 보여준다.
4부 ‘재편되는 도시’는 상무·첨단·수완지구 등 신도심의 성장과 1995년 이후 광주의 현재를 짚어보며, 확장된 도시의 연결과 재구성이라는 미래 과제를 제시한다.
이번 전시는 단순히 과거를 기록하는 데 그치지 않고, ‘지금의 광주는 어떻게 만들어졌는가’라는 질문을 통해 도시의 정체성을 묻는다. 특히 최근 활발하게 논의되고 있는 광주·전남 통합 이슈와 맞물려, 관람객들이 미래 도시의 방향성을 고민해 보는 기회가 될 것으로 보인다.
