경주솔거미술관, 장남원 ‘움직이는 섬 고래’ 사진전 개최

【브레이크뉴스 경주】이성현 기자=경북문화관광공사(사장 김남일)가 운영하는 경주솔거미술관은 오는 5월 11일부터 9월 13일까지 장남원 작가의 ‘움직이는 섬 고래’ 사진전을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 한국 유일의 고래 사진가로 알려진 장남원 작가의 작품 세계를 조명하며, 고래를 매개로 인간의 사회적 관계성과 자연에 대한 성찰을 담아내기 위해 기획됐다.

<장남원 : 움직이는 섬 고래> 전시는 작가가 1992년 일본 출장 중 처음 고래를 접한 이후 수십 년간 이어온 작업의 결과물로, 광활한 바다와 고래가 선사하는 대자연의 감동을 담은 사진들이 소개된다.

특히 1980년대 국내 수중 사진계가 접사 중심이던 흐름 속에서 장 작가는 광각렌즈를 활용해 바다의 웅장함과 생명력을 표현하며 새로운 사진 경향을 제시했다는 평가를 받고 있다.

장남원 작가는 “고래를 찍지만 사실은 인간이 잃어버린 감각을 기록하고 있는지도 모른다”며 “끝없이 펼쳐진 바다처럼 삶의 가능성 역시 넓고 깊다는 메시지를 전하고 싶다”고 밝혔다.

1950년생인 장 작가는 23년간 중앙일보 기자로 재직하며 남북 고위급 회담 평양 특파원과 소말리아·르완다 내전, 걸프전 등을 취재한 종군기자 출신이다. 

1979년부터 수중 촬영을 시작해 세계 각지의 바다를 기록해 왔다.

김남일 사장은 “경상북도는 환동해권을 중심으로 바다와 함께해 온 지역”이라며 “이번 전시가 고래를 통해 인간과 자연의 공존을 깊이 있게 고민하는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

Gyeongju Solgeo Art Museum to Host Jang Nam-won’s ‘Moving Island Whales’ Photography Exhibition

The Gyeongju Solgeo Art Museum, operated by the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation (President Kim Nam-il), will host the photography exhibition ‘Moving Island Whales’ by artist Jang Nam-won from May 11 to September 13.

This exhibition was planned to shed light on the artistic world of Jang Nam-won, known as Korea’s only whale photographer, and to capture reflections on human social relationships and nature through the medium of whales.

The exhibition <Jang Nam-won: Moving Island Whales> presents the results of decades of work that the artist has continued since first encountering whales during a business trip to Japan in 1992. It showcases photographs that capture the awe-inspiring grandeur of nature presented by the vast ocean and whales.

In particular, Jang is acclaimed for presenting a new photographic trend by utilizing wide-angle lenses to express the magnificence and vitality of the sea, amidst a trend in the domestic underwater photography scene of the 1980s that was centered on macro photography. Artist Jang Nam-won stated, “I photograph whales, but in reality, I may be recording the senses that humans have lost,” adding, “I want to convey the message that the possibilities of life are as broad and deep as the endlessly unfolding sea.”

Born in 1950, Jang is a former war correspondent who worked for the JoongAng Ilbo for 23 years, covering high-level inter-Korean talks in Pyongyang as a correspondent, as well as the civil wars in Somalia and Rwanda and the Gulf War.

He began underwater photography in 1979 and has documented oceans around the world.

President Kim Nam-il said, “North Gyeongsang Province is a region that has lived in harmony with the sea, centering on the East Sea Rim,” adding, “I hope this exhibition serves as an opportunity to deeply contemplate the coexistence of humans and nature through whales.”
